That new No Joy was quite the trip ... no song quite the same. It was very jarring at first, especially track 2, Dream Rats was perhaps the most aggressive-sounding thing they've done. The final track, Kidder, really stands out for me and is really evocative of Curve. It's almost like every song is inspired by a different band. If you don't know the Cocteaus or this album, consider what is probably my favourite song of theirs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Mqftd6h-E This is just a masterwork of building and releasing tension. In the first bit, listen to Elizabeth and the piano. Note how the piano is just *a smidge* behind her. Her voice here is right on beat, but because the piano is a little off it creates a little discordance, and starts the tension in the listener. Then, as she builds towards the chorus, she abruptly stops and loops back. That lack of resolution amps up the tension. Then the beat drops after a second time through, around 1:50, and releases all that pent up tension. It literally takes my breath away. You feel swept forward as if by a strong breeze. Next verse with the full instrumentation note now the piano and her voice are on beat. This serves to my ear to really drive the song forward with greater pace even though the tempo hasn't changed. (There also seems to be a shift from minor to major keys but I do not have perfect pitch and am probably wrong on that.) It's just magnificent.

After watching the recent linked Cocteaus stuff on YT, and the resulting suggestion algorithm, I got sent down a pretty deep Lush rabbit hole. The music video for Sweetness And Light appeared in the sidebar and I was intrigued by the thumbnail (Emma's somber-looking head on a glowing white background) so I clicked and I loved it. That tune is absolutely narcotic. I already had their Split album in my library, probably from someone linking Desire Lines in this thread, but I hadn't listened to it much, and I hadn't heard any of their other stuff (except Lovelife a long time ago, and I didn't care for it). 5 days later, and I've watched like, all of their live footage, interviews, read all the wikipedia articles, and bought Gala and Spooky. Also discovered Starlust off of Split as a 2nd favorite. This is really good stuff, I'm thoroughly enjoying the guitars and vocals. It makes me want to pick up a guitar and a chorus pedal and learn how to play in this style. They do use some distortion here and there but I think the real treat is the clean guitar, it is heavenly. Welp that's my trip report.

I appreciate the work and effort musicians put into their music vids, doesn't sound particularly fun to make them. Although the videos from Lovelife are amusingly goofy, they look a lot happier in those. My story with that album is that I got it when it was current, probably from Columbia House or BMG. I hadn't had a CD player long so I was trying out a lot of stuff. Not sure why I picked Lovelife... whatever description they had in the catalog probably piqued my interest. But I didn't like it at all. Guess I was in a phase where if it wasn't excessively loud and lacked massive amounts of fuzz I wasn't interested. These days I can appreciate the BritPop stuff much more but Lovelife is just so flat and rigid compared to their marvelous earlier works. Is there a fansite or similar online location that has a curated collection of interviews and live footage and whatnot? Took me hours to fall asleep last night because certain passages from Sweetness, De-luxe, and Starlust would not stop in my head. Also, anyone know if the 2015 CD box set are re-issues or re-masters? 4AD's site is sold out, otherwise I would have bought that instead of digital. Noticed right away that Gala and Spooky are very quiet recordings. They will be joining my pile of "turn this one up" albums along with Pretty Hate Machine, You'd Prefer An Astronaut, and Siamese Dream (and probably others which escape current memory).

Monochrome is amazing. Much like Desire Lines, though, Emma put in a striking passage (the chorus) that shines right through the darkness. Brilliant songwriting. On the whole, I think I like her songs a lot better than Miki's. Although I said "holy poo poo" out loud the first time I heard Baby Talk. e: apparently De-Luxe was on Rock Band 2?!? I had that game like 11 years ago but don't remember playing that particular song on it. Pretty sure I tried all of them. Maybe the odd time signature of the verse turned me off. I have been trying to find people who will appreciate just how incredible this recording is, and I think this may be the thread https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-M3rs6Vm5c&t=12s I've been a big fan of New Order for too long and this is really the best recording of one of their shows I've found in terms of both sound/video quality and the quality of the performance. Just doesn't get much better than this IMO, this was right after they had just written Hurt and Temptation (early version of which close out the show) and just... yeah, this is my fave era of New Order by far. Stephen Morris is so tremendous, especially in the first song.

Yeah, those two songs are like... comically similar. New Order and The Cure have *always* had a tremendous amount of give and take and similarities. I actually feel like their early careers compare very favorably; up to 1982 or so they charted sonically comparable waters in very different ways. Stack up Unknown Pleasures/Closer/Movement against Seventeen Seconds/Faith/Pornography. Both bands have a pretty tragic/fraught history, too. I mean, The Cure broke up after Pornography- even Gallup left for a while after that, as I recall. It's interesting, I feel like Robert Smith is a far better singer *and* guitarist than Bernard Sumner; and I don't mean that as a slight to Barnie, I love him but he's never been much of a vocalist and frankly I feel like the pressure and concentration required of him to sing certainly detracted fro his guitar-playing at live shows... I still don't know how Smith was able to play such complicated riffs while singing, back in the day when they were a 3-piece it was even more impressive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu1eQk2HEqg This song works so much better with a tempo *at least* 2x faster than the album version, like here. It takes an eerie and ethereal atmospheric song and turns it into this furious, frenetic wail. Different early version of the lyrics. Not as amazingly and impressively and shockingly different as the version of Temptation I posted earlier, though. Nothing on par with hearing Bernard Sumner singing "Three days ago, I heard about a friend of mine" out of nowhere.
