farm subsidies prevent food prices at the grocery store from being a goddamn roller-coaster because the people who grow them keep booming and busting. They're a good policy that has a lot of good effects for people who've never even seen a farm.

LabyaMynora posted:Also, he's an rear end in a top hat. He gets NBC to do this stupid thing, and then a few hours before it, insults and denigrates them (and not for the reasons they deserve to be insulted and denigrated). quote:Aside from being the root of names like Charles and its Germanic cousin Carl, we know "churl" as the root of the regrettably rare adjective "churlish," or "rude in a surly, mean spirited way." This seems unnecessary until you realize that rudeness does not automatically imply the latter part, and in fact a good deal of rudeness is cloaked in politeness or ignorance. But I digress. The word "churl" as a noun is still used by some English speakers of a more antiquated bent to refer to a mean spirited person. Its archaic meaning, though, is for a person of low class. Specifically, in early Saxon England the churls were the lowest class of free people, which is to say they were not nobles nor royalty nor clergy, but nor were they serfs. They were essentially peasants; poor, but with the social and practical advantage of not being bound to a manor as serfs were. They were, in words used by the Mystery Lecturer that I will never forget, "possessing the freedom of the upper classes but without the economic means to take advantage of it." They could go wherever they wanted to and do whatever pleased them, in other words, if only they had any money. Alas, they didn't. So all that freedom was for naught, except inasmuch as it permitted them to look at serfs as their inferiors.

LabyaMynora posted:Also, he's an rear end in a top hat. He gets NBC to do this stupid thing, and then a few hours before it, insults and denigrates them (and not for the reasons they deserve to be insulted and denigrated). To him, there's no such thing as a win-win negotiation, there's always a winner and a loser. If you make a deal with him and walk away happy, to him that means he screwed up and he will immediately begin busting up the deal, or dragging you back and demanding further concessions. NBC threw him a bone when they gave him this Town Hall, and that made him not grateful but contemptuous towards them, and he thought he could bully them further (both for the sheer cruel fun of publicly humiliating someone, and to get them to treat him with kid gloves during the town hall itself) - and why not, they'd already folded once. This is (IMHO) why he's such a terrible businessman. A good businessman knows how important building networks of trust and reciprocal obligation are. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours; you do me a favor, and I'll owe you one (and make good on it). Trump literally lacks the cognitive ability to that - he's more you scratch my back, ha ha ha you dumb sucker I got you to scratch my back in return for NOTHING! Which is why he got run out of NYC real estate development. He'd get included in all these deals, and instead of just taking the money he made and banking the goodwill he generated, he would sue all the partners and get them to settle with him, which to his mind made him a genius (not only did he make money on the real estate deal, he got a bunch of extra money by hitting them with a bunch of lawsuits, which they settled LIKE DOGS! I am so smart!) - but it meant that after a couple of years, no one wanted to partner with him on any real estate development projects, and no one invited him to be part of any projects they were setting up. So he moved into building and managing casinos. Same thing with his fake charity appearances - he thought he'd discovered One Weird Trick that put him ahead of everyone - show up at NYC charity events, promise them a big donation, and then welsh on the deal - you get the headlines and the good PR but don't have to write any checks! What a genius, why hadn't anyone else figured that out? But word quickly got around, and in NYC rich person society you advance and make contacts by writing those checks, so Trump found himself turned out and uninvited from the sort of NYC society events where big deals and relationships are developed and negotiated, and he was left to sell mail-order steaks and do wrestling walk-ons.
