just had my best run of hades yet. made it to elysium for only the 2nd time and got all the way to theseus. killed the minotaur and got him down pretty far but got worn down by all the god aoes and his constant blocking. then i got a new first boss who killed me real good.

Congrats! You’re quite close to a win if you’re getting there. Theseus and the Mino are the perfect boss for Elysium - way too much loving HP, and primarily dangerous because there’s so much poo poo going on at once and a bunch of it is poorly communicated. (For instance, the god attacks mark a location, but give no indication of the time, so you can’t tell when you need to be out of them unless you’ve been paying attention to them since they spawned and already know how long the delay is.) e: For more useful advice, you can consistently damage Theseus by staying away from him to bait out his spear throw. After it, he almost always turns and walks away from you for a bit, letting you mash him without worrying about the shield. megane fucked around with this message at 08:25 on Oct 12, 2020 |

I got Hades like a day and a half ago and I just beat it I did this by using the shield and stacking as many Zeus and Poseidon boons as I could. Eventually I got their respective legendary boons and also their combo boon. I was constantly knocking enemies around twice per hit and hitting them with lightning, and also hitting them with lightning again whenever I knocked them back (twice per hit), and sometimes the lightning struck twice, and every time it struck I shot electrical bolts everywhere. I spent most of my time hiding behind my shield and zooming around like a demonic bulldozer while the entire screen turned into a clusterfuck of lightning.

I got Hades when it came out on Epic and struggled mightily for a while, and so many people beating it instantly has scared me off trying any more.

It’s much easier once you fill out the Mirror, one of the design decisions with which I don’t really agree. Particularly with regards to your durability - you go from 50 hp and no healing to 100 hp... plus up to four charges of death defiance which you can refill, not to mention 3 hp of healing every room. It’s pretty absurd.

Also, an early win is almost always because of a particularly broken build coming together. I clowned Hades once - once - and he has been absolutely mopping the loving floor with me ever since

Some people are just really good at this type of game. I got my first win in about 30 runs. Another friend of mine is pushing 50 and is still 50/50 on biting it to either Styx itself or the final boss. I also don't think there's anything wrong with turning on God Mode if someone needs a push. Turn it off when you feel more practiced!

Never underestimate the value of experience. Getting lots of face time with bosses lets you learn and eventually internalize their moveset and the timings. When the game was first released in early access I died almost a dozen times to Meg and nearly as many times to the Hydra. Now it’s rare for me to get hit by them at all. Another thing that experience teaches you is your preferred playstyle. While RNG is a significant factor, Hades actually gives you a lot of means to deliberately customize your build. Choosing a weapon/aspect at the start of the run, using keepsakes to force specific gods, using reroll tokens to get specific boons — it’s actually very rare to get a build you’re totally uncomfortable with. But the specifics of what that actually means are pretty subjective.

Aagh, sorry for the shameless plug but Noita will be coming out of EA later today, at 10 AM PT (~7 PM UTC). I've spent over 7 years on this so it's great to see this day! Also we've been super hard at work on new stuff, so that's nice as well! Steam page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/881100/ (Sorry!! But I think people here have been into Noita so I assumed it'd be OK to post about this!)

You should contact Steam support and figure out a way to get that game listed under Nolla Games as well on that platform, you're missing on a cross-promotion opportunity. I wouldn't have known if not for that mention in one of your trailers. Congrats on releasing another game!

It's literally fantastic that so many pre-eminent roguelike devs are on SA and in this thread. I can't imagine anybody has a real issue with plugging their passion projects here. The self-promotion rules are pretty old-timey, more like a rule to prevent shills regging accounts, back when this place was somewhere that would have been a realistic place to do that. Congrats! Haven't picked it up yet, but I've heard very good things from people who have.

Not sure how Steam works here!) Baba & Noita are both in the Nolla Games Bundle, though, which contains Noita + games made by the devteam members.

Hell yeah Noita owns and already felt fairly complete a year ago. I've been loosely following the EA updates and I like a lot of the changes made. I think getting workshop support out asap was really smart since the game is a wonderful sandbox and ripe for modding.

Apologies but we can do better for "hot" than an ancient version of ADOM Try: Demon, a monster collecting roguelike with Shin Megami Tensei vibes: http://demon.ferretdev.org/ Shadow Of The Wyrm has got some decent meat and bones on it now: http://www.shadowofthewyrm.org/ FrogComPosband is the latest hotness in disgustingly ridiculous *band variants: https://github.com/sulkasormi/frogcomposband/releases If you want the same insanely overdeveloped thing but in a Nethack flavour, try Slash'EM Extended: https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Slash%27EM_Extended I think TGGW doesn't get enough love, mainly because it's like the spiritual successor to Incursion: http://www.thegroundgivesway.com/ Infra Arcana has Lovecraft vibes to the max: https://sites.google.com/site/infraarcana/home You've probably heard of CDDA, but just in case; it's really fleshed out now and has a big community: https://cataclysmdda.org/ Finally Sil-Q, which although it's a *band variant, plays absolutely nothing like a *band and is an actively developed continuation of the legendary Sil: https://github.com/sil-quirk/sil-q/releases perc2 fucked around with this message at 11:26 on Oct 16, 2020 |

I really like TGGW, inventory you find being the entirety of your build forces you to try different stuff each run and there's a nice balance between resting to get energy back and having enough food and health.

Yeah, I may have been a bit loose with "spiritual successor to Incursion", it's more the aesthetics. But this game does something that so many roguelikes don't, by actually making each run exciting exactly because you have no idea what you're going to get. I often wonder with games like Anbgand whether there's actually any point to the random generation when you generally end up with the same ascension kit, having killed most of the same uniques, in the same-looking 100 floors. perc2 fucked around with this message at 14:54 on Oct 16, 2020 |

You basically have a circle of cards that swing towards you two at a time and you click on one...And that's it. Maybe it's an item you equip or maybe it's a monster you do damage too or whatever, but that's as complicated as a decision point as it gets. If you like card based roguelites I dunno why you wouldn't pick Slay the Spire or Monster Train for $25 instead and if you just want the roguelike dungeoncrawl thing than Hades or Darkest Dungeon are also $25 and waaaay deeper. Ring of Pain seems like the cardbased roguelike equivalent of a $2.99 idle clicker. I'll concede that the art is very nice!

TGGW has strong semi-successor vibes to Frozen Depths and Forays into Norrendrin(the former likely actually Done Done in a rare feat, the latter more in that What Dreams May Yet Come state of holding out hope for Even More Updates)---so definitely try those as well.

It's turn-based but it's got the same pacing and lethality as nuclear throne and it's fun cruising through 2-15 minute runs trying to figure out how to turn the lack of balance to your advantage. Not even in the same league as Spire or Hades, no idea why it costs as much as it does.
