Finished up Utopia on Prime. It was pretty batshit crazy but still quite enjoyable. Warning though that it is about a deadly pandemic sweeping through America so if you are not in the mood for something like right now then maybe give it a few months (years?).

Teriyaki Hairpiece posted:I actually would have liked Bly more if the black and white episode that explained everything had happened earlier in the season. I'd have liked it more if that episode hadn't been in the show, tbh. The biggest sin horror stories can do IMO is to over-explain things, and "here's an hour explaining exactly what the main ghost is, why she's a ghost and how everything works is a good hop, skip and jump over the line. I also could have done without the very ending of the last episode. It was 100% obvious the bride was Flora grown up long before the, "you know, it's quite strange. My middle name is actually Flora" and oh look here are all the main characters younger again scene. Maybe they were going for something else, but it just felt so pandering. I thought Bly Manor was good overall. Not as good as Hill House, perhaps, but then they were both quite different shows. I loved the melancholy atmosphere again, and some of the plot elements were truly horrifying, such as Hannah trying to finally take Owen up on his invitation too late, desperately trying to bargain for a chance at a new life after she was already doomed to drift through Bly Manor. E: oh and a lot of the acting was excellent. Rahul Kohli and T'Nia Miller were especially excellent IMO. As were the kids, which is pretty god drat rare for child actors! The Cleansing Hour wasn’t necessarily good but it has an interesting premise, it’s entertaining, and the last ten minutes make up for some of its shortcomings.

James Spader plays such a great character on Blacklist, but over the course of this first season I can't figure out if it's good or formulaic; there's episodes that seem like forced 24 fan fiction, and then some episodes/arcs that unfold perfectly. Alan Alda was scary as poo poo while I wrote this. e and seven ~20 episode seasons? It either goes somewhere or absolutely nowhere Inspector Hound fucked around with this message at 15:58 on Oct 15, 2020 |

James Spader's character is great and it has a couple really stand out episodes and arcs, but the show is trashy as hell and most of the characters are dumb as rocks at the best of times. I wanna say I made it to midway in season 5 before I gave up but kinda want to pick it back up because it is kind of fun. Pretty sure 7 seasons later they (kind of big spoiler I guess?) still haven't revealed whether Red is Elizabeth's actual dad or not? and so by that measure it has gone nowhere! And RIP Clark Middleton

Ahh goddamn I had not heard this. I like the Blacklist for what it is. I don't know if I'd call later seasons good, but still entertaining and watchable. And IIRC the Red/Liz relationship does get sort of cleared up in season 5-ish but I guess in 6/7 it gets more unclear? I haven't watched that far yet. Now that season 7 is on Netflix, I need to get around to finishing it so I watch the infamous finale.

I loved S1 of Mr Mercedes, liked S2, and haven't seen S3. It has Brendan Gleeson, who is always worth a watch, and Breeda Wool and Justine Lupe (Lou and Holly respectively) are great too and Holly is definitely a scene stealer even opposite Gleeson. The villain and his mom are sufficiently creepy and weird. S2 goes off the the rails a bit cyber possession! and S3 starts a whole new story line.

Started watching The Magicians again and I’m enjoying it even more now. Probably just the right kind of dark, asinine escapism for 2020. Also rewatched Hill House and yeah... it’s still one of my favorite, if not my very favorite, streaming shows of all time. The BNL / Two Storms episode combo just blows me away.

John Bronco on Hulu is a pretty good way to spend 40 minutes. It's funny enough, but it would've worn out its welcome if it were any longer. Walton Goggins has like six different kinds of facial hair in it and he sings a song. Not as good as Misbehavin', but still catchy in its own way. The weird 80's commercial was my favorite part.

I got to the penultimate episode of Bly Manor last night, and I realized that I just couldn't do it anymore. I stopped watching halfway through the episode and I think I'm done with the show. I'm so bored out of my mind with this show, just as I was with Hill House. Everyone keeps talking about how much they love these two seasons, and I wanted to like it, I really did. I realized though that I just didn't care what was happening, none of it is scary or creepy, it's just pure misery porn. And it certainly doesn't help that I find the little girl extremely irritating, and that Henry Thomas's English accent is just really really bad.
