RightClickSaveAs posted:Anyone else remember Octopus City Blues? It funded around 2013 and was initially looking to be a simple little retro-style pixel art adventure game about a weird tentacle city. Several years and many hilarious themed updates later, it seems to have blossomed into some kind of much more complicated affair with day/night cycles, a gossip system, and who knows what else at this point. I'd somehow never heard of this before, it looks incredible.

I have no idea what to actually expect, but it was something like $7.58 USD for the early bird (if it even hits the target) and it's a cartoony turn-based game.

Yeah that could be zero dollars with Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam and I still would not go near it.

My Time At Sandrock is the sequel to My Time at Portia, which was a pretty dope Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley-like that I highly recommend. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aolJ3ZHzhCo

The R-Type Final 2 devs are doing another run of crowdfunding, this one lasts a month, it's basically just a chance to fund the final stretch goals, get access to the demo whenever that's finally ready, etc: https://rtypefinal2.com/crowdfunding/third/

Solastra: Crown of the Magisters just started EA but already feels like a Kickstarter success story. The limited budget means it has somewhat janky graphics and sparse cities, but a lot of care has gone into the game. For my money it feels more like a modern turnbased successor to BG/CRPG implementation of D&D 5th than BG III does. You play as a whole party of four, not a PC and companions, and the dialogue options tie choosing a response and a character to give it in a way that feels pretty natural to me. It does, however, fairly heavily limit the ability to roleplay a particular character in a particular way and you don't have interesting companion characters or the interplay with them. Combat feels good and like D&D, and the AI has some nice stuff like goblins trying to skirmish and run. I like the travel system, which makes the world feel sizable and real in a way that most don't without being super annoying. I could see the ambushes getting annoying later on if there aren't additional ways to prevent them. Quests seem a bit straightforward and simple right now, but it's also just the start of the game. Hopefully those get more complex, and content gets added and fleshed out more.

The interesting thing about Solastra is that it's going full on DnD 5E. Not "inspired by" or "based on". It's 5E, with all of it's intricacies, weird quirks and problems. And kind of like playing Monopoly with the actual rules instead of whatever broken house rules your family passed down through the generations, 5E with a computer to make sure everything runs Rules-As-Written - is really not that bad.

Think of it as a more loving and hopeful ToEE sort of thing...but only to an extent, but in a good way. There's flourishes and personality unto itself, especially when it comes to party personalities outright as folks are having strings plucked that have gone heavy with dust since Wizardry 8. They are OGL/(Literally) House Ruling(Part of a crowdfunding tier more explicitly even) it up as much as they can to suffuse it with personality, given unlike Larian on BG III and a fair number of the other D&D 5e project in the works they don't have the full and utter license as opposed to the latest and greatest SRD. The update cadence seems good, feedback devouring right and proper---all signs are hopeful ones.

There's a kickstarter for a spiritual sequel to Mischief Makers that also seems to be taking reference from Klonoa as well, Double Shake. https://twitter.com/rightstickdev/status/1312490076752900096?s=19 There's a demo build on the page too, so be sure to check that out if you're interested. While it's already reached funding, they have a stretch goal for Crush 40 to do a vocal track for the game.

I don't think I've ever seen a game use that kind of rotating 2.5D perspective before, but I totally imagined exactly that when I was in high school. Complete with corners and 90 degree flips on crossroads. Cool to see someone actually did it.

Plenty of them have done it dating back to the PS1. Klonoa, for example.

I've never played Klonoa, so there ya go. I guess Viewtiful Joe does that kind of thing, maybe not the 90 degree turns, but it does do the curved angles thing. And I guess Kirby 64? But again I don't think it did the 90 degree crossroads thing, just curved paths, but linear.

Thinking about it, the game that did this sort of branched path setup was Tomba 2 of all things. I can sorta see that in the islander theme of the game.

Local friends of mine are finishing up a kickstarter for a 2D platformer with Trine/Lost Viking vibes. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/clanoconall/clan-oconall-and-the-crown-of-the-stag/ The demo is pretty fun and there's a fair bit of potential in the concept (unlike Trine, the combat actually involves decisionmaking)
