NWN2 solved this problem elegantly: Make levels 1-3 the tutorial. Wanna skip the tutorial? Here's level 3, off you go.

I dare say NWN2 was the perfect iteration of a d&d-based rpg.

Correct.

Concentration spells are very bad in BG 3 though at the moment, because there is a ton of unresistable damage from surfaces and explosions, and concentration fails on any total roll below 10 or half the damage.

Yah I think they are going to need to do some careful choices about which bits of 5e work with their system and which need tweaking.

I'm also not rapt with the entangling vines that does 1d6 damage and are all over the place.

For what it's worth I REALLY appreciate a lot of the details in this game already. Like when you talk to Gale and he tells you he trusts you, he lists off some of the things I did that made him trust me, including the fact that I managed to talk a certain NPC down after failing an initial skill check roll. I hope we get more stuff like that with people referencing what you've done or how the story is playing out.

Likewise, try not recruiting shadowheart when you first meet her, but leave her alive. She'll pop up a few times later. It's neat and makes them feel like actual characters wandering about the world rather than pieces of the scenery you collect.

Also, somebody on reddit followed a livestream of Kevin VanOrd (the writer for Lae'zel and Wyll, and he also wrote Kagha, Dror Ragzlin, and all of the myconids) who apparently stated amongst other things that they plan to have eight companions, possibly more, and potentially including companions that won't be origin characters, and that there will be more origin companions than in D:OS2, but possibly less companions than BG2. Part of the "less than BG2" bit is because they want all the companions to have fleshed out stories.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/jd1qsq/highlights_from_kevin_vanords_stream/

I was kind of expecting more companions but happy to hear they intend to have 8, possible more "origins" companions and possibly also non-origins companions. I think 10-12 would be the sweet spot; we'd need at least 2 tanks and 2 healers, one of each evil aligned and one of each good aligned, to allow the PC and the other characters to stretch their wings a bit and slot in more unusual or specialised classes.

Alternatively, maybe limited to some sort of NG+ mode, let me swap companion classes when your recruit them like in D:OS2. Even if it doesn't fit their backstory, I wouldn't mind playing with fighter gale or rogue shadowheart etc. if it means I have more freedom to compose a viable party with characters I didn't use in my first playthrough.

Both Halsin and Minthara would be able to fit both the tank and healer roles, they're automatically picked up as part of the story, and they're mutually exclusive between "good" and "evil" playthroughs, so maybe they had thought of that already. Minthara would double up with Shadowheart as an evil Cleric, but if they are planning to make her a companion, she could also be a Paladin with little difference to the story.

Minor thing but the bit about Wyll being the most good-aligned party member so far made me realize that he essentially has the personality of your stereotypical over-zealous Paladin with a dash of narcissism, but in the skin of a Warlock. Kind of interesting.

I just realized that since expertise doesn't exist in BG3, Shadowheart with the urchin background could be as good as Astarion at hiding and stealing (and potentially better with trickery domain powers) if she was statted with a 16 dexterity. Even a 14 dexterity and she'd only be 5% worse at hiding and stealing. The 9 dexterity is just mind-boggling considering her background and domain.

The only real downside of dumping her strength would be losing access to a 1d6 base damage weapon, she'd have to switch to dagger (the only simple finesse weapon). This is a problem with the trickery domain in base 5e, it grants zero extra proficiencies. Even shortswords would be an upgrade.

edit: Ah okay, the way to get shortswords as a proficiency for trickery cleric is to be githyanki or elf.

If Shadowheart isn't rebuilt before then, I'm kinda considering once the companions become available as origin to create Shadowheart as my main character (provided origins still allow you to customize skills and ability scores)

She might also be a good candidate for a single-level dip into monk if multiclassing is available by then. It'd allow her to use Dex with a quarterstaff wielded in two hands (1d8) and probably give her as good an AC without armor as she would have had with armor and shield.

I feel like people are overplaying the Warlocks power. I like the concept of Warlock but it isn't great in 5e, and there is nothing in this version that makes it better at damage than a Rogue or Ranger, especially a Ranger with Hunter's Mark which basically makes it even with Agonizing Blast Eldritch Blast. Now the Warlock will eventually outshine a Ranger who doesn't use spells beyond Hunter's Mark, but that doesn't happen until level 11 when the Warlock's Eldritch Blast gets a third blast and the Ranger doesn't get a third attack.

Multiplayer rogue/thief trip report day 3: probably the most outright powerful class in early access. Robbing everyone blind and handing out +1 to attack/damage and +1-3 AC to all of your party members, getting tons of free scrolls, potions, arrows, throwables, and bypassing of locked doors by the dozens with lockpicking is aces. Dual-wield +1 shortswords, open combat from stealth and your effectiveness skyrockets. I only use my shortbow maybe once every two encounters, and I feel much stronger now.

Magic item location spoilers: There's a ring that grants you +3m of movement. You can find it on the goblin Crusher on the second floor of the external goblin camp, on a throne with three goblins facing him He's right outside the external goblin camp waypoint. He's wearing it so you have to kill him to get it, but dialogue can make killing him much easier. This ring works with dashing, so with a bonus action dash it's 6m more movement which makes getting in behind people or killing two targets in the same turn so much more feasible.

The true power of the warlock is a reliable ranged damage dealer that can have a +5 bonus to all three face skills at level 1 (intimidation/persuasion/deception) if you take a background that grants persuasion proficiency. You can get through a lot of content with just being good at social challenges. CHA doesn't do anything for rangers or rogues except social challenges. Also you can take friends as a starting cantrip for advantage on social checks.

They blend in pretty well with the ground texture. I don't think they're overused, I got tripped up in two spots only. Honestly, having more dangerous flaura/fauna around a druid grove is not out of the question.

That seems right. My hit chances increase about 25%ish with a backstab compared to attacking the same enemy from the front.

Ah yes the ranger can be just as good as the base warlock by spending spell slots.

Also the Warlock certainly doesn't have Hex at all to mirror the effects of Hunters Mark.

Rod is good but doesn't give bonus to Damage, so Rangers/Warlocks somewhat even out once magic items get involved.

High and low of it is that Rangers are more likely to hit (with weapon style Archery and Advantage against creatures that haven't had a turn yet although don't think that's been added), Warlocks deal more damage. Pick which flavour of those you want when it comes to shooty boys, and then feel bad when a Wizard outshines you regardless.
