I dunno, Lamplighter was another kinda weak link this season. He willingly(?) goes from being a super rock star to working as an orderly / cremation murder machine who has been spiraling toward suicide out of guilt while willingly killing people for money. And all that when Vought could have just quietly disappeared him and built an actual crematorium for the lab where the cell doors are only super power proof from the inside somehow. "I'm bad. I'm reluctantly bad. I'm too sad to live" is a weird character arc for ten minutes of screen time. It just felt like they found a plot line and awkwardly jammed him in to without much thought and I don't see why they didn't just cut the character from the show because nothing about his bits are necessary or even make sense.

I mean the show is fun as a kooky experiment into what it'd be like if they redid the old 67 Batman show in the same campy style, and then every episode ended with a hard R battle against GWAR. I see where it's almost well written, but then it trips over it's own feet, and it bugs the poo poo out of me that it tosses out the one interesting thing from the comics that should have been the reason for selling the show to the network in the first place.

Turning the most likeable side character into a 3rd graders first dick joke was a pretty weird choice too.

My thoughts exactly. I also don't get keeping Lamplighter in if you aren't going to use him as a vehicle to tell the backstory of the previous war between the Seven and Mallory/The Boys. I was pretty excited when I saw he'd been cast as Lamplighter thinking they'd keep the original story.

I’m mad that Lamplighter comes and goes (and dies) without getting to see what his blackmail photos are. He is obviously completely obsessed with sex, pornography, and kink stuff, but what could he be caught doing that is so bad he was willing to kill a CIA director over it?

The Lamplighter thing was just weird to me because he straight up told Mallory that killing him would be doing him a favor as though he's been suicidally guilty since he killed her grandkids and he could've self-immolated anytime he wanted to but didn't, and then a couple days later when Hughie convinces him that he could do something useful and heroic to make his father proud he goes along with it and then kills himself for no reason. Rescuing Starlight and her mom and then testifying against Vought could have been a fresh start for him and could have set him on the path to do more good things (that wouldn't necessarily redeem him but would at least make his father proud) but then he just suddenly works up the courage to piss it all away and kill himself out of nowhere? K?

My guess is that the writers didn't want The Boys to start amassing supe allies beyond Kimiko so they had to find a way to kill him off, although they could've just had him get his head popped during the hearing too.

On the subject of differences from the comics, I really like how, in the comics, Butcher was a fairly enigmatic character; always a step ahead of Hughie, usually putting on a facade, several important characters have a story that they exposit about him that comes to different but equally wrong conclusions on why he does what he does. You dont really get a full grasp on the character until the end.

Show Butcher by comparison feels very "figured out" at this point. If Karl Urban weren't such an extremely charming and talented actor, I feel like I'd be more disappointed about that.

Lamplighter says right before he burns himself that he wanted to do it in front of his statue. I think that his suicide plan only crystallised in his mind when Hughie reminded him that he could still get into the Tower and he saw a chance to make a grand gesture.

As for making his father proud: we already know that he thinks he's irredeemable. Nothing he did could make his father proud of him. It was just what he aspired to do when he became a superhero.

Genuinely suicidal people aren't known for following logic that appears super rational to others. They didn't realize how over the edge he was, and finding himself back in that room just triggered something in him and he seemed to feel it would make a statement. I didn't think there was anything "wrong" with that somehow making sense to him in that moment.

I took Lamplighter to just be a really pathetic character (as in a pathetic person, not pathetically written).

I do think he feels guilty about killing Mallory's kids, but not so guilty that he's being entirely honest when he says shooting him would be doing him a favour. In reality I think he's managed to pass a lot of the guilt for the kids onto Frenchie, or just suppress it, and that's how he's been working for Vought killing who-knows-how-many innocent people since then. I don't think he goes with They Boys out of any huge desire for redemption, I think it's either because he just wants to matter again or he thinks Vought are going to find out what he did and kill him.

I think what really breaks him is when it sinks in all he can expect now is being put in front of a congressional hearing, and almost certainly being assassinated by Vought. His life was already poo poo, now it's poo poo and about to be over. So he decides to blow off his chance to actually help someone and achieve redemption in favour of a flashy but easy gesture. That's why he's disappointed that they got rid of his statue. He's not suicidal because he's a killer that deserves to die, he's suicidal because he lost his status, wealth and power and can never get it back.

Now that I kind of finished The Boys and I found a good source for comics, is there anything else I should check out to clean my eyes and my taste buds after all this ennis-ness? Adult oriented, stand-alone arcs, no golden age superheroes, already read Transmetropolitan, The Losers, 99 Bullets, Preacher(didn't finish it), TWD but I think I missed Miller's Batman, never read any Daredevil (there was a good arc I think?), Punisher (should I start Ennis' Punisher?) etc

Seconding Hitman, and yes, you should at least read The Slavers arc of Punisher Max.

If you're looking for cleansing from Ennis style stuff in your comics, and if you don't mind a very literary turn, I cannot recommend Mike Carey highly enough. Lucifer (v1) and The Unwritten are his magnum opuses. If you want something a bit lighter, then The Wicked and the Divine is a pro read, as is Velvet. The former is a pop art look at young people who become as gods, but at the price that "better to burn out than fade away" is not a choice; the latter is spy stories set in the late 60s with the high concept of "James Bond, but he's a front and Miss Moneypenny is the real super-spy".

One of the better super hero deconstruction books following the hosed up lives of their sidekicks was Brat Pack. It's pretty dark and bleak, but it doesn't have that exploitative edge-lord garishness of stuff like The Boys. It's from '91 and feels kind of dated a bit in the dialog department, but it's worth the time.

*Also I had no clue those spin-off mini runs of The Boys existed until this thread, and I wish I still didn't. If anyone is picking up the comic stick to the OG 72 issue series because holy poo poo that stuff is terrible.
