point out that the socialism that Fox News talks about is what’s done in China or Cuba or the Soviet Union while the socialism most Americans want is social democracy and works for the rest of the first world

and by works I mean “it at least keeps more people from dying needlessly compared to American capitalism but is continuously being hosed with by those countries’ conservatives to make it as ineffective as possible so they can fully castrate it later down the road”

the thing that has totally ossified in my parents' brains is that taxes = bad. specifically for the ultra rich. like sure, we all don't like getting our money stolen, because most of it is getting pissed away on f-35s and exploding spacex rockets, but there are people here worth over 100 billion dollars, and i'm just trying to pay the rent. the idea that those people should pay a lot lot more really hits a wall in their minds.

It's because they think that if you just work hard enough you could also become a billionaire 100 times over. And if you tax people too much they won't be incentivized to do so! Why work hard to become a billionaire only to have the gubmint take away all your hard earned money?!

People also don't really understand how much of their lifestyle is contingent on government spending and government intervention. Every hourly working man in America loves that sweet time-and-a-half OT, but they don't seem to understand that it's guaranteed by the FLSA and that "burdensome regulations" are the only thing that make sure they're paid fairly.

one thing americans also don't really get is that their lifestyle is dependent on the exploitation of the global south, and the way that they have kept americans pacified is by crushing democratic movements in the globally southern nations that we exploit for various things. like for example, i just bought 3lbs of bananas at costco for $2 that were grown in Costa Rica, and we all have iphones that use cobalt and lithium from africa or whatever. if the person who had to climb the tree to pick the bananas or the person who had to mine the cobalt got more of the value of the goods they produced, americans would be unable to afford basic everyday items without getting massive raises, which obviously the corporations will not be keen to do.

Gate's parents were corporate lawyers, Bezos was an investment banker, and Apartheid Clyde's family made money from emerald mines. Weird how people with money have more opportunities in life.
