Nice, thanks. I like Earth but haven't dove deep enough into them yet. The Dylan Carsons track is good poo poo too but a lot fuzzier than I want right now. SUSS is closer to what I was thinking of, will definitely be giving them some play today.

This is near bang-on what I was thinking of. I really need to watch the movie. This is also kind of funny to me because I just realized that the trend in tv scores and credits music that's being lampooned in this Portlandia sketch probably originated in part with Ry Cooder's music, maybe even the Paris, TX soundtrack.

I appreciate vocals that aren't very discernable. Lo-fi and live stuff is good too. The band Grouper comes to mind but her music is a little bit too bleak/dour for what I'm trying to find.

I've been listening a lot to Windhand and what I'm enjoying is the distorted instruments and the slow rhythm, but that it's also pretty melodic. The closest genre I can think of is the doom or stoner metal, but I don't mind if there are synthesizers or electronic elements in there. I just want that slowww, dark and heavy feeling.

Look into funeral doom and drone metal. That's where you get the really slow, really heavy riffs and a general atmosphere similar to those songs.

There's also a genre known as psychedelic doom metal, but that tends to be a little faster and less heavy.

I'm trying to come up with track references for the musician for a game I'm making. The track they're working on next plays while the pre-mission cutscene plays -- think like the briefings in Starcraft. This is a naval combat game, though, so the tracks I've found so far are:

Can anyone recommend other tracks in a similar style? The trick is that I'm looking for a versatile track that can be applied to a wide range of contexts (both storywise and emotionally), which means it'll necessarily be fairly generic.

Thanks, yeah, that's similar in tone to what I'm looking for. The main thing I was worried about is making sure the right emotions are present -- my musician did a draft piece as part of their demo reel that had this huge feeling of Pending Major Events that just wouldn't be suitable for missions like "go patrol this stretch of water and kill the commerce raiders that have been bugging our merchant fleet". Something that conveys a feeling of readiness and courage without being super amped up about it is way more appropriate.

There is a lot of Hill Country blues that sounds like this, so dig deeper into the Burnside family. RL's album You Better Run is good. Also Junior Kimbrough and the Dickinsons (Jim, and his sons Cody and Luther as North Mississippi Allstars).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd72zpSUQCs

There are some bands out there that do Hill Country-adjacent stuff (i.e., covers of Burnside's stuff) decently, or capture the sound well.

Early Black Keys is heavily influenced by the genre, and they even made an album of Junior Kimbrough's songs called Chulahoma. It's loving great.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_gvcxcyQMU

I also really like Left Lane Cruiser. Their first album is truer to the sound and really sounds like a hosed up amp about to burst into flames. The rest of their stuff is just as loud and nasty and rowdy, but pretty silly too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prS5iu-W2GU

If you're ever in Mississippi in June, stop by the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic. It is a blast.

Walter.
I know you know how to do this.
Get up.

I'm doing my yearly search for new music.

I have listened to every Stars of the Lid and Boards of Canada track 10,000 times. Tracks like Stars of the Lid's "Requiem for Dying Mothers pt. 2" and Boards of Canada's "Tears from the Compound Eye" are favorites.

Everything by Eluvium/Robert Mathew Cooper gets heavy rotation, too; 'Indoor Swimming at the Space Station' is a winter evening favorite.

Other things that have been favorites for years: Casino vs. Japan, Tycho, Celer, Balmorhea, Niles Frahm. Through Spotify and Apple Music over the last few years I've found well knowns like Hammock, Pillowdiver, Slow Dancing Society, etc.

God is an Astronaut gets a lot of rotation, too, though I know they don't really fit in here.

Anyone have some suggestions? And furthermore: what the gently caress is this kind of music called????
