i think getting stuff from ali is addictive because if you get something good it feels like youve cheated the system so to speak, so you tend to risk buying lovely things because of that payoff

I think I bought a powered USB hub a bunch of years ago and was disappointed. Agreeing on the Anker/something vaguely reputable for USB hub, and Ali is fine for almost anything else.

Ohh you want to be very discerning with anything which plugs into the mains, Big Clive tore down at least 2 powered USB hubs that could easily electrocute you.

Buying a soldering station from AliExpress -- good idea or horrible?

There are some good ones. The TS100 is your best bet. I think there was one other okay one. Other than that, no, just get the Hakko FX888D.

Good but depends which one. I have the TS100 and there are a couple other recommended options.

How dumb is buying replacement automotive fuses from AliExpress? I haven't been able to find anywhere within Canada that I can order them from. I've already ordered some from AliExpress.

Legally or practically? I think they'd be fine, if not terribly accurate in their rating. You wouldn't want insurance people knowing about that though

You know, I'm realizing that I don't think I've ever had an auto fuse go out. I guess an ali one could break too easily. maybe you'd want to just bridge it with heavy wire

Not to be all weird but a fuse is a safety net. I have a 100 pack from amazon bc I get lots of cars and they get jump started a lot and fuses blow. A blown fuse can happen on its own but if it does it again that is a symptom of something going on. I see no reason am ALI fuse pack would be worse than amazon but just get an $8-10 100 pack off Amazon and let your grandchildren deal with it because you will never use that many. If you replace a fuse and it blows again you need to find out why. That is today’s PSA

My family had a car many years ago that developed a problem where if you took a right turn just the wrong way, pop went a fuse and the engine died until you replaced it. Took it to the mechanics more than once and they were just so we just kept a box of fuses in the glove box until we got rid of that fucker.

The car is new enough to me that I don't know whether this is a chronic issue. The spare fuse from the fusebox works fine, but now I don't have a spare. I just want to make sure that whatever replacement I get doesn't allow 25A when it should only allow 15.

If anyone is deep in the pin-buying game on AliX, one of these might be a good buy for you: https://www.suck.uk.com/products/pinboard-mini/ I bought one for my gal and painted it up in silver & black, does nice for storing all the unworn pins: Currently on half-price, though I was lucky and got one for myself quarter-price in an email flyer

I’m all for having a laugh, but where do you guys think the random crap at the hardware store labelled “made in PRC” comes from? Or the Amazon sellers with names like “KGYZZN”?

Exactly this. A search for fuses on Walmart's site returns almost exclusively items shipped from and sold by someone other than Walmart (not too difficult to read between the lines to figure out what that means). There doesn't appear to be a difference between the fuses I can order from domestic suppliers and the ones from AliExpress, other than that the "domestic" fuses are more expensive but would probably arrive much more quickly.

So I was just browsing for metal bands shirts in happy colors when I searched “bolt thrower shirt” and got a weird surprise. In a bunch of the listings the display image is a shirt with pictures of women either eating rear end or giving a blowjob. In the name of science I clicked and the offending image shows for a second then it switches to the Bolt Thrower or Entombed shirt mentioned in the listing. I haven’t seen that anywhere else on Ali but as far as weird sales tactics go that’s a fun one.

Huh. Can confirm. Works on the phone, but not on the PC. Works with multiple bands, actually.

I highly recommend the thread classic Poorly Made in China by Paul Midler. Just because something looks like it's the same item as the one you can buy from the shop near you doesn't mean it's made to the same standards, of the same materials, or even with any sort of quality control in mind. Trusting fuses from AliExpress just so save a few euros is not a step I wouldn't take, but everyone of course has their own priorites.

Me and a friend pre-covid were in preliminary stages of developing a new watch brand and travelling to in Shenzhen’s Bao’An district to get a closer look and feel on products. There's literally buildings full of watch parts, and you can choose a specific band design and colour on one floor, the types of hands on another and face etc on another. We could technically still do it, but I would want to travel there to have face to face meetings with my manufacturing partners.

I really wouldn't bother with the fuses, they might be made in the same factory even but considering they're already pretty cheap and you can just pick them up at any time you need, it seems quite pointless.Snowy posted:So I was just browsing for metal bands shirts in happy colors when I searched “bolt thrower shirt” and got a weird surprise. A case review: I lost a favourite screwdriver for 8 years. I only found it when a FB Memories thing popped up showing me working on one of my arcade machines. It was inside the whole time.

Just go buy some fuses at Walmart unless you are in AI and have more than 5 cars. Even if you do you can get a giant assortment from amazon in 2 days for $10. Otherwise Walmart sells a little pack of blade fuses for $3
