I carefully checked them for strength while limbing it and cut the weak ones flush, then checked my holds every time I used them too. And removed loose bark.

It looks a lot sketchier than it actually was.

hosed with the stupid loving chainsaw all day, it is a piece of poo poo and I hate it and it runs worse than when I started now despite trying a new carb, new ignition coil, new plug, and verifying it's still full of the new fuel I put in it last week

I hate single cylinder carbed engines with a burning passion.

Also it looks like I'm flying to Seattle/Key Peninsula to get our well drilled next week, I'll probably be there Monday through Friday if anyone wants to burn poo poo and drink beers in 5 acres of blackberry in a socially distant manner. Warning, I am likely going to be sleeping in the back of my rental car the entire time so the later in the week people appear the more distant you will want to remain.

That's a good idea, I don't think a radiant system would add any value over a heat pump, either in monetary terms, or desirability for a prospective buyer/tenant.

Heat pump + emergency heat is leagues better than the horrible oil furnaces most houses out of towns have out there anyways.

I ran the numbers and I only need about 12kw in heat strips to produce the same amount of heat as the heat pump. However I only have approx 500cfm available in the duct that's easiest to put the strips in, which limits me to 6.3kw in that duct to stay under 40°F ∆T. So I picked up a 5kw heat strip new in box on eBay that some guy was firesaling for a third of the market value and I'll see how it works, I'm not even 100% sure it'll fit the duct based on size but this is a cheap way to find out. I spent way too long looking at various heat strips and figuring out dimensions based on components on them. If it isn't enough I'll pick up another and find a place to install it with enough airflow.

Oh and I finally fixed my hateful chainsaw enough to run once (it won't start again now that it cools down but I also don't care again until it's time to use it next) and...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_ejhrC_hkI

:toot: entire tree is on the ground now and I didn't die. That was the third or fourth section I dropped, Britt only realized what I was doing at that point.

E: oh, some of you might like this. The emergency heat coil output on the heat pump is designed to drive the heat strip directly with 240VAC but isn't rated for enough current to do what I want, and the control relays on the heat strips are 24VAC. what do you do? Buy a 240/24 control transformer that mounts to an electrical box for 20 bucks. I really wish the heat pump just had a 24vac output, but, oh well.

Yeah, that's what we call underfloor heating in the United States of COVID19. At least what I've always seen it called. I didn't think it was in your basement since I didn't remember you having one, but it was the only thread I'd seen radiant/underfloor heating in recently.

The baby miniex I just bought is literally made to do basement work. It will fit through a standard 28" door (you have to fold the roll bar and hydraulically retract the tracks). Apparently plumbers love them.

(I won't be using it in any basements, it's just a nice size for digging utility trenches).

Allegedly the heat strip will arrive today, but I'm still 3000 miles away. I guess I'll have Britt measure it so I can start fumble-loving around in CAD deciding how I'm going to mount it to the duct and build or buy the electrical enclosure to cover its wiring.

Speaking of being 3000 miles away, I decided it's time to jump the gun and start a thread for the new place instead of continuing to derail this one. Don't expect much movement on it, but I'll post stuff there when I have things to post. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3942473

Well. I've been back on this side of the country for several weeks and have been forgetting to update this thread. I've gotten a few things partially done as usual.

First, the heat strip install. It went about as well as could be expected, though I wish I'd thought about this ahead of time, I could have put them in a MUCH more optimal location. Oh well.
First cut a hole in the duct. Yes, it goes across a drive, no I didn't really have a choice.

Then start punching holes in the electrical enclosure. My harbor freight hydraulic knockout punch kit kicks 95% as much rear end as the greenlee one it's a shameless copy of, but for a fifth the price.

And the corners of the hole where the electrical enclosure meets the duct...

Saber saw and file the rest:

It's actually installed and the power supply cable is run, but no pics of that yet. I hooked it up temporarily to verify I had enough airflow to keep the strip from tripping the limits or overheating. Which meant I can start work on flooring instead of installing the radiant heat!

So I did. Second layer of subflooring plywood down:

Boom, flooring down:

(loving ow. 350 dollars in flooring, nearly 350 dollars in adhesive to put it in, 200 dollars in plywood to put under it. This poo poo ain't as cheap as it looks on the shelf. 4 rooms left to do.)

Then I started pretending to be a finish carpenter. Baseboard time!

And the closet door and frame are installed, door to be stained tomorrow:

Started putting the base cap trim on:

(It's actually a layer of 8280 lattice strapping behind base cap trim because I had to use 5/4 baseboards to cover the gap between the flooring and the wall. I'll use 1-by baseboards and skip the 8280 in future rooms, now that I know to ignore the instructions and make the flooring go closer to the wall, especially since I left expansion room for it under the edge of the drywall.)

Almost starting to look like it's habitable by normal human beings again.

I wish mine went there. If I could go back a few years I'd (1) go for a 3.5 or 4 ton not a 3 ton (it's perfectly livable, but the upstairs does get up to about 70 in the summer, and it's a modern VFD system so no worries about it cycling too much and causing humidity issues) and (2) redesign my filter rack and output plenum to support larger filters and heat strips directly in front of the blower.

The trim actually is growing on me but I'm still only using it where it's necessary to cover gaps (this room and the living room, where I've got some wide gaps to cover from previous owner fuckery and an existing floor.) My parents place growing up had like 5/4x8 baseboards and even larger base cap trim than you can buy now, and most baseboards seem lame and small by comparison ever since.

You can chalk that up to dumb luck because I did not plan it at all. Wow.

E: the first outside corner pic is like a quarter inch from matching, probably because I cut the right hand piece an inch long and snuck up on the right length and miter angles while repeatedly measuring and comparing to a scrap piece held on the left side of the corner. I think I must have had it on the saw a dozen times. Then did the same thing to the remnant piece and used it as the left hand piece. So there's a few inches of missing wood in there and the grain probably moved slightly over that length.
