I have a serious question about the Queen's Gambit: Is the chess realistic? This might sound like a joke but one thing I can't stand about depictions of chess in movies and film is when the writers have clearly never played chess and the pieces are just moving all over the place!

The positions are extremely realistic because they got former world champ Kasparov to make them. US champ Hikaru Nakamura said after watching the first two eps that it was the most accurate representation of chess in movies/tv he has seen.

The main nit pick I have is they couldn't get away from having people tip their own king to signify resignation, which isn't a thing in real high level chess. Slight maybe spoilerish nit-pick draws are very common in real chess, and I don't remember a single on camera draw in the show.

Oh, speaking of Hikaru and the US Championship, it's also online and starting today. I'll be watching the coverage on Hikaru's twitch channel.

Amazon bought it (like Netflix bought Cobra Kai) since Youtube Originals aren't a thing anymore. The creator says if enough people watch it, there's a possibility that Amazon will order a Season 2.

Amazon actually advertises it as a "new series."

Extremely realistic, yes. When she plays 10 matches at once, she is making all the correct moves any time you can see her moving pieces. It's very cool.

Just think of the worst tendencies of anyone that touts by your bootstraps thinking and multiply them by 500x (not 500%, but that may confuse Mike.)

Also, most of the people represented on Dirty Jobs were millionaires, not 'hard working blue collar people that do this because they know the value of a dollar.'

Watching The Good Wife finally since I really enjoyed Evil.

It is good, and I am enjoying it. But jesus loving christ does it take the "kids find something important out, then don't tell the adults" thing to the limit. I'm 11 episodes in and 9 of them have continued that subplot. It loving sucks.

Me crush ass to dust

The kids suck but what's funny is that Alicia admits she doesn't even like her kids in the last season.

If you want to stay with the goofy tone of Evil then the same team also made a short-lived show called Brain Dead starring Elizabeth Winstead and Tony Shahloub but it aged really badly because of the "both sides are equally bad!!!" politics.

I actually watched Brain Dead first and really liked it, then watched Evil and liked it a lot too. I didn't know it was the same people until I started The Good Wife. It is a good show overall still, just yikes one of the most annoying plot devices ever, stretched over a whole season.

It's good. Each season is only 10 eps, with the 4th only being 7 eps(I assume due to covid).

The first season is about not-Bernie Madoff, but then that plot is basically dropped in subsequent seasons and replaced with Trump poo poo. I thought it was a shame since the ponzi scheme plot was more interesting than the Trump stuff. The show still has great secondary and guest characters, including Micheal Sheen playing a great character in season 3.

Both of these are addressed in the show so... chess pun!

first as she is preparing for her fist major international tournaments she is told that at high level competitions they don't knock over or say check so that she doesn't look silly and second she draws with the national champion to become co-national champion and draws are offered and accepted/rejected at other times

edit: but I don't play chess so I might have miss-interpreted the second

I'm pretty sure she lost to Benny, but since he had two draws earlier in the tournament she tied him in the standings and got to be co-champion. I guess there's no tiebreaker game. It mentions specifically that a draw would be enough for her to win the tournament.
