So this would have been weird. Mike Pereria nearly went to umpire school to be Fox's MLB rules analyst as well.

Mike Pereria posted:

“Not too long after I started, maybe three or four years after I started, the sport that was missing this role was baseball. So Fox, when they signed their new deal with baseball, asked me if I wanted to do baseball.

“They asked if I wanted to do it and go to umpire school to learn the rules. I decided, O.K., I will do it. I’ll go to the baseball school. I will come up and learn the rules so that I can do this role and I actually talked to some umpires and a couple of people in the umpire department in New York and Major League Baseball. But Joe Torre put the nix on it. He nixed me. He said we don’t want a guy being our rules specialist who’s never umpired.”

Ratings were brutal for the ALCS

Awful Announcing posted:

As a whole, the ALCS averaged 2.781 million viewers, an all-time record low by more than half a million viewers (Indians-Blue Jays, 2016, 3.33 million). That’s down 43% from last year’s NLCS on TBS (Washington’s four game sweep over St. Louis, 3.995 million) and 77% from last year’s ALCS on Fox (Houston’s seven game victory over the Yankees, 4.929 million viewers). The NLCS averaged 4.476 million viewers, up 12% from last year’s NLCS on TBS and down 10% from last year’s ALCS on Fox.

Overall, the 14 games in the LCS round averaged 3.629 million viewers, down 26% from the 11 games last year (4.589 million viewers, notably with only one game on Fox as opposed to three this year, two of which were simulcast on Fox and FS1).

Where does that leave MLB heading into the World Series? Well, that’s somewhat tough to say. The series has no significant sports competition for Games 1 and 2, airing Tuesday and Wednesday, but will have to contend with the Friday night TV dead zone for Game 3, college football for Game 4 on Saturday (South Carolina-LSU on ESPN, Michigan-Minnesota on ABC), and Sunday Night Football during a potential Game 5 (Bucs-Raiders, which will probably suck away a chunk of both markets).

Last year’s World Series did not set a record-low for viewership (largely because it went to seven games), but four of the seven games in the series did hit record lows. The Rays played in the second least-watched World Series ever, their 2008 loss to the Phillies, which averaged 13.193 million viewers over five games. Game 3 of that series, delayed an hour and a half by rain and not starting until after 10 PM on the east coast, is the only World Series game to draw under 10 million viewers. All of the right elements are in place for this series to hit rock bottom for MLB, and if the headlines in a week or so don’t contain the phrase “record low,” baseball should be thrilled.

He and Palmer got yanked, ostensibly because of COVID stuff, but he had almost zero O's involvement this past season. The conventional wisdom is that it's because he has steadfastly refused to sign multi-year contracts and the O's knew they were going to lose the MASN lawsuit so they had an excuse to cut payroll.

How exactly are they BS? I'm more talking about the "general purpose" ones, like the Fox Sports ones as opposed to YES/Marquee which are team specific.

YES isn't team specific. The branding sure, but content wise it's always been the Yankees and Nets.

also like the broadcast rights situation when the Yankees and Nets made YES was all kind of hosed up with pre-YES, James Dolan ended owning all the cable rights to every non-NFL major pro team in the NYC metro. All 7 of them.

also like its loving ridiculous that Dolan still has 4 of them and they all play pretty much during the same season so teams gets bumped around like crazy even though theres like 3 networks.

The NY Appeals Court has upheld the decision that MASN owes the Washington Nationals $100mil. MASN will likely take it to the NY Appellate Court.

Seems like a pretty big risk by these cable streaming services to alienate the sports-centric subscribers. How big is the demographic that: a) is into cord-cutting, b) still wants cable, and c) doesn't care about sports?

It's been growing pretty steadily, but live sports still absolutely rule the roost as ratings go.

What do young non sports fans want live, streaming cable service for? I enjoy the convenience of being able to cloud-DVR whatever cable series I still watch and have them in the same place, but I don't think there are many of them that are unavailable next-day on one conventional streaming service or another.

I need to be interested in fewer things because instead of streaming saving me money it would cost me about $20 more a month if my math is right.

Yea, my internet is a ripoff at $80/month, and it makes buying a live streaming service not worth the money. I'm generally fine without it, but it has cut way into my sports watching this year.

I was going to say that’s a bad idea if you want it to last a while but if you are renting it you probably don’t actually have to care about that like I do with the TiVo.

I've been in some form of broadcasting since 2003. College radio, early webstreams, local TV, local radio, etc etc. I didn't totally feel like I'd made it the first time someone said they heard or saw me. I didn't totally feel like I made it the first time I felt good about a live broadcast I did. DIdn't even feel like I made it the first time I held an ESPN microphone (OK, for ESPN3.com, but hey).

Last night I called a local district semifinal soccer match. Hell of a game, one team tied it up with 1:41 to go, went through extra time all the way to penalties. Tons of fun.

This morning I finally got my first email complaint from a viewer. An angry parent of a player on the losing team. It basically boiled down to "my son was a back, not a midfielder".
