Part of me thinks Vtubers are successful so it could work, but if they're all in the same group I can't see many people being interested in the virtual members over the real members. It would be really funny if the virtual members became more popular than the real members though.

And vocaloids obvs. What it really boils down to for me is how this will be integrated for releases, it sounds like the human members will promote like a regular idol group and the AI members will have some digital singles as well as be tied into music video lore or whatever. e: oh and be used for social media and fan engagement poo poo

Honestly I kind of dig PinkFantasy's weird shtick, but they should have set the unmasking goals way lower than a Billboard #1, like have it be their first music show win or something. Or topping one of the Korean charts, which is hard enough for idols now without them trying to top fuckin Billboard lmfao. Yeah I can vibe w/ that reasoning, as well. The retro trend we're in right now will probably last for a while, at least, and is going fairly hard. Though kpop and retro sounds have been peas in a pod since kpop started, to be fair. So it never fully goes away. This recent string of stuff does sound kinda samey though, I can agree with that for sure. I feel like The Weeknd kind of kicked off this cycle of it and a lot of music coming out sounds like it was inspired by Blinding Lights. When We Disco is def the superior JYPE released retro throwback r/n. I really want to know what a JYP written retro song would sound like for TWICE, since I CAN'T STOP ME isn't his-- in fact I don't think he has any writing credits on the new album. He is the king of retro bops after all.

I am admittedly a shameless Twice apologist but I think, putting aside ICSM (which I personally love a lot although Twice + 80s synths was always going to work with me anyway), Eyes Wide Open has some of the strongest B-sides of their career. Some of the best songs on the album were written by members too which I think is pretty neat. Although I love Dubu unfortunately the songs she wrote, Queen and Bring it Back, are probably my least favorite on the album. JYPE is p much the only Big 3 company that consistently has members of girl groups participating in song production if they want to, it's one of the things I love so much about their GGs in general. The company really seems to just foster that environment of 'hey, if you wanna learn songwriting go for it we gotchu'. REBOOT was basically entirely written and composed by the Wonder Girls, other than I Feel You, and even way back in Wonder World they had a lot of writing credits on their tracks. Not to mention both Yubin and Yenny doing songwriting for acts outside their group-- hell Yubin is technically still a JYP employee under their production team, despite now being the CEO of her own company. Meanwhile at SM and YG it's far more common for the boy groups to be allowed to get involved with their production, and is often a selling point for their BGs in the case of YG. Hell, CL wasn't allowed to write on any 2NE1 tracks until their final album. Though with YG it really seems to depend on whether it's an idol group or otherwise. And it's not to say SM definitely doesn't allow their female idols to get in on production, but it seems to be more of a senior artist thing for them-- Taeyeon wrote lyrics for I, for instance, and then chose herself not to write any more of her own songs b/c she prefers singing stuff written by other people. BoA produces most of her own stuff now as well-- but then again it's loving BoA she can do whatever she drat well pleases. Granted this could all be confirmation bias and JYPE just tends to have more trainees and idols who are actively interested in pursuing composition and writing, so it feels like they're more cool with it when they just have more people who want to do it. Though with YG it's pretty clear the man uh has some issues with women in general, and it is very weird that it took so long for anything CL wrote to appear on an album. e: digging into SM a bit more it looks like Yeri has had a hand in a few of their songs, v good. with SM I think they may just be picky and sticklers for quality in general. i remember sooyoung, yuri and seohyun always complaining that they'd write stuff and it wouldn't get picked for albums. they prob have a very specific bar of quality they want to uphold lmao esperterra fucked around with this message at 22:44 on Oct 29, 2020 |
