Phew. Six more hours of bloodborne under my belt and three more bosses dispatched (Shadow of Yarnham, Rom the Vacuous Spider and the Reborn one) and I stopped after meeting Logarius for the first time. It was awesome and invigorating!

It is wild how powerful bloodborne can make you feel but most of all the sound and visuals are so detailed and wonderful. I feel that the precision of how the world is built is quite unparalleled. Goodness what an incredible game it is!

Yeah, almost all rereleases let her keep a towel from an earlier scene (even when they otherwise include the original sprites as an option), but the very excellent french localization made 10 years ago was based on the original doujin release so that scene is left as in was back then and a bit of a shock. It's worth noting that despite all that, said french version has a rather hilarious PEGI 7 rating because non-interactive parts were not subject to rating in the PEGI process, 10 years ago at least, so the rating only applies to the bonus minigames. So the box includes an extra warning besides the PEGI one explaining it's definitely not all ages.

Also the Disco Elysium talk made me wonder what a speedrun of the game would look like, and I was almost disappointed by how accurately I guessed exactly what the run would be like and what the build was. Max physical, main skill Shivers for the free +1, rest of the points in INT for like, a single logic check.

minor spoilers for the routing: Endurance check the hung body, then immediately knock out Measurehead to meet Clark, ask him to get the body down. Do the autopsy, then read your case file notes for 12 hours, go to sleep. Next morning do the Titus confrontation, get him to tell you about Ruby, read case files for 12 hours and sleep again. Savescum the big Shivers check and the game's pretty much over from there.

somewhere in there you grab a tanktop and all the magnesium laying around in trash cans for the checks you plan on failing since you only have one morale, plus you buy a beer, a cigarette, and some speed to give you bonuses on the important checks. Run is just over an hour

Shadow the hedgehog’s quality varies heavily based on what missions you’re doing. There are some real stinkers in there like the Maria level where you have to heal people.

yeah...the concepts are sound but a bunch just aren't fun. but i have liked hide and seek with cream and cheese, gathering rings at the circus with tails, the ones where you're taking out a small handful of big objectives like eggman's ships, or where you're chasing down an armored vehicle. an extra special shout out to air fleet, where the dark mission is to kill the president (in a video game).

not quite finished with it yet but my opinion of shadow the hedgehog the game is thus: it's fine!

it's mostly let down by the whole mission structure, i think. making one of four campaigns in heroes revolve around fetch questy missions was fine and a novel change of pace but here, where every level has two or three goal conditions and sometimes simply getting to the end isn't one of them, it just feels like padding. the good old days when having more hours of gameplay was objectively more good. some levels are much better about this than others, but ultimately i don't regret downloading a completed save file so i can just play through the levels freely (and not have to replay the first one at least ten times). you have ally characters for non-neutral missions, who can sometimes be controlled by a second player, which is fun and gives me that character banter i crave, but the majority of the sonic cast is relegated to hero missions. so every single dark mission partners you with either a floating tv screen of eggman or a floating eyeball avatar of the main villain Black Doom, who is so aggressively generic it wraps around into being funny, but neither of them are playable which leaves the whole system feeling pretty undercooked

the guns are hilarious (most of them are at least as big as shadow) and are also fine. i actually really appreciate that, while the fundamental gameplay is very similar to how 3d sonic has worked since adventure, the developers were willing to branch out and incorporate more action elements, because it's y'know, a shadow game instead of a sonic game. basic enemies still have health bars, which is not my favorite mechanic heroes introduced, but weapons are everywhere and can shred through most enemies so the pace of the game doesn't suffer this time. and because there's more combat (and combat is mandatory in some missions), shadow only loses ten rings per hit instead of all of them. shadow also knows kung fu now so you don't really use the homing attack much at all

the story is frankly amazing and the main reason to play the game. despite the edgelord aesthetic, this game happened to come out while sonic x was airing, so shadow the hedgehog gets to be the debut game appearance of the 4kids cast. shout outs to yugi as knuckles and usopp as both sonic and shadow. however all that said, while i liked this game more than i remembered/expected to, i'd still probably rank it as the worst of the 3d games, some of the missions are that much of a drag. maybe if the first level were cryptic castle instead...

ranking of the sonic series (so far [of what i've played]):

sonic adventure 2 battle
sonic the hedgehog 3 & knuckles

Thanks for boosting Graveyard Keeper, it’s been on my wishlist awhile, and picked it up after you posted, and it suits me well. I’m looking forward to sinking many hours over the next few days.

shadow would definitely be more fun with a complete save, but when you don't it's a game where they seriously expected you to play it at least 10 times over to get the real ending, despite only having one starting stage and five ending stages (each has two missions and respective endings and to get the other you have to replay the whole game again just to get back to the exact same level).

I mean, honestly not really? There's plenty of violence in early Higurashi but it's pretty standard fare (especially for a VN that famously has an incredibly low number of sprites and CGs and all of its backgrounds are just photographs with a filter slapped on) and really didn't become the memetic horrorfest that it became known for until years later with the anime adaption. The first release, Onikakushi, sold out purely on word of mouth on the story and mystery being interesting/compelling.

Also why I think the original Ryukishi art is v. charming, it's painfully easy to mod the current Higurashi releases on Steam with a variety of patches that update the sprites, add voices, etc. If that is a barrier now for a lot of people it doesn't have to be IMO.

The one thing I remember from Shadow is being compelled to be evil in most levels because the human guns just felt way better, and the quickest way to get one is to murder a human.

Also the Omochao gun was incredible, though the rest of the special weapons were mostly garbage (or very flashy, cool garbage)

SMT: Noctune HD came out in Japan today and it looks...good, I guess. A ton of PS2 games still look really good if you jack up the resolution in an emulator (FF12 BARELY needed remastering, imo), but the menus are all sleek and have smooth fonts now and look like mobile game menus. I'm reeeaaaaaaly interested if they'll do an English dub at all, since all the cutscenes and some incidental dialogue like fusion and shops are all voice acted now.

Unfortunately, the game appears to have some big lag issues during fusion, and they didn't really update the fusion system at all, meaning you still have to enter/exit the menu to reroll your fusion. The text also appears way slower and delays your inputs - I'm watching a Nocturne speedrunner play it now and he's a half-hour behind his usual time, but he's only two hours into the run, so this seems like something that's REALLY gonna add up over a casual playthrough

Ikenfell
Overall thoughts: the game was good, but it has some issues that bring it down to a soft recommend. The primary issue is the combat; it's very punishing, and there's a real lack of interplay between your characters and their skills. This lets you swap them out freely without any issue, but it also means that there's no real depth in terms of composition or move combos. Because you're only allowed to have a single turn per character (except for gilda, who owns and is probably the best character in the game) it means that the trap skills aren't super useful and you don't have the ability to combo your skills. In addition, only two characters have the ability to move enemies around and they're both straight line until they hit an object / the wall, so you can't do setups.

In terms of characters, I talked about how the game was trying a bit too hard with representation but they relax after the introductions and let the characters breathe a bit. In addition Ima has a rap theme that plays like, twice and it's kind of cringy. Gilda, who I mentioned before, has a unique quirk where she does less damage when she's in hurt / critical health. It's unique and helps connect her character with the combat. Also I didn't mention it but the end of the game sucks rear end, you have to fight two bosses with three phases each, and you're sick of it by the end.

The music is pretty good, the art is fine, though the character portraits have some real devart energy. I'd be really interested in seeing them do a sequel or another game where they add some depth to the combat, and more characters like gilda with a story / character > combat connection would be very good.

Yeah that is true, I think Heroes III is suppose to be the one with the most customization and accessibility, hence why it is the most popular of the series, followed by HoM&MV, but that being the first 3D game of the series, and pretty old now, it has a lot of issues, and so the impression I get is that fans largely stick to HoM&M III.
