Should poor white and black people in the 30s (or today) not have unionized? Their experiences were radically different. Labor movements figured out pretty quick that building common ground is key, isn’t that what solidarity means?

There was a huge effort to do precisely that in the 1890s! A huge southern union of agricultural workers (mostly black) tried to hook up with the big one out in the midwest (mostly white), and the midwest one was like lol, no, you're black. The negative effects of this are still to be felt to this day!

arguing over it is very dumb, yes, but walking people through why PoC and LGBTQ+ and women need further liberation before we can really make headway as a unified class is pretty essential to making headway on the whole “class consciousness” deal

intersectionality is less about keeping a score card and more about being cognisant of the differing struggles of the working class and helping them in areas that are ignored by pure class politics. yes, raising the minimum wage to $20/hr obviously helps the poor, but if it’s largely only helping a subset of the poor because public transportation hasn’t been addressed or because people are just avoiding hiring the various minorities then it just continues to disenfranchise those groups.

what if we want to do both

if we’re talking about labour movements that actually exist in the US, nearly all of them are heavily staffed by LGBTQ+ and PoC, and as far as I know they all have various language that involves some form of intersectional takes as part of their plank

I’m pretty sure even IWW includes language such as this

my assumption is no, but to be frank i am unfamiliar with the planks of trades unions and recognise that there are going to be... significant differences in some rhetoric between, say, IWW organising for local retail workers or computer touchers or other non-trades than longshoremen or electricians etc

in a normal country you would expect them to realise dynasties don’t work and people are voting explicitly against the elite, specifically the liberal elite, and begin running normal people with social Democrat/justice democrat policies given the success of the justice Dems in their areas

unfortunately instead they’re going to blame latinos and swing right instead
