Not for nothing, but what is even the appeal of a colorized Godzilla? Everytime they colorize a movie it just looks unnatural.

They should Turnerize it. I watched a Turnerized Mighty Joe Young when I was a kid and it was a box of crayolas threw up on the TV.

I don't agree with everything in his channel but I found his take on Shin Godzilla pretty insightful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDxmB2D9oDM I liked Shin Godzilla a lot but I always felt like it had this clinical-like coldness to it that I couldn't quite describe until this video. I do get that it's a perspective piece and you aren't really supposed to connect with the main characters because of how they view the events. Iit's ultimately about the lovely politics of how these disasters are viewed. It still left me cold after viewing it. Jimbot fucked around with this message at 02:09 on Nov 6, 2020 |

I still felt happy when everyone came together and managed to seal him up in a non violent way, thereby bypassing the US nuclear route. EDIT: What's the best way to watch the heisei series? I have Godzilla VS. Biolannte on VHS and that's about it.

With how well the previous set performed and subsequent Kaiju releases from other companies selling out you've got to imagine that Criteron and others are trying to secure the rights for another boxset or similar.

The Heisei and Millennium stuff isn't really in Criterion's wheelhouse, and I think a lot of other boutique labels that might be willing to look into it would be given pause by how obviously difficult Toho was to work with for the Showa set.

In hindsight it's no wonder that the movies have been split up among so many distributors since just about forever, it feels like.

They're double features and you'll always have them. For some reason people are drifting away from physical media and if you're one of those people it's still worth getting them for niche genres like HK action, wuxia, kaiju and the like. These ones with the bright green label If you even do a search some of those same ones some are going for bananas expensive because for some reason. Like the 1991 version of Godzilla vs King Ghidorah.

If you get real lucky you might find those Heisei double features kicking around a walmart bargain bin. I got all of them for $5 a pop.

Dangerous Person posted:How was Toho difficult? I've seen it mentioned before but not in detail I'm under the impression that a lot of Japanese studios feel like their properties should command as much money overseas as they do at home, which makes things prohibitively expensive. I'm sure a lot of distributors would like to just have the rights to distribute Godzilla in English-speaking countries but it would probably cost an arm and a leg for the rights to every movie starring the big guy.

I know that there is a group of people upset that the Criterion sets didn't include all the English dubs, and think that's because Toho refuses to allow those dubs to be distributed anymore. Which honestly would be totally fair, old English dubs of Godzilla movies are pretty lovely, and probably contributed a lot to the impression that Godzilla movies were crudely made. Those dubs genuinely damaged the Godzilla brand in America, and it makes sense for Toho to try to wipe them off the face of the earth
