Also there's a new Mega Drive album out and it looks like they took their habit of kind of wandering off during a song and channelled it into making something that sounds kind of like demoscene music, and while I'm not sure if I like it or not I know if I heard it on a Megadrive or and Amiga 500 as a kid I would have lost my mind

I've been on a huge Joy Division/New Order kick, and have been enjoying and appreciating all the really dark stuff that I could never fully appreciate before - in the past I had never really been a huge fan of Joy Division aside from their more pop-oriented tunes (Disorder, Digital, Atmosphere, Love Will Tear Us Apart) and the same was true of my relationship with New Order - I've loved songs like Age of Consent or Temptation for as long as I can remember, but stuff like... I dunno, Everything's Gone Green or uh, nearly all of Movement was a bit too grim and smoldering for me to listen more than once or twice.

Dunno why but that has *really* changed lately, and it's like I'm listening to these songs with a whole new set of ears, or something. JD songs like She's Lost Control or Shadowplay now sound downright catchy to me, and NO songs like Procession or In a Lonely Place - or all of Movement - now sound downright pop-y, I suppose, even when Bernard is doing his best to sound like Ian.

I wanted to post this live show I came across recently of New Order performing at the Peppermint Lounge in NYC just 3 days after the Taras Shevchenko show that *used* to be the best show from 1981 of theirs that I'd ever encountered in any recording - but this one is better I think, tighter performance overall from the guys and Bernard in particular seems a lot less tense.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-M3rs6Vm5c

Show opens with probably the best version of In a Lonely Place that I've heard, with Stephen doing a pretty amazing impression of a drum machine glitching out at the end. Then Hooky sings Doubts Even Here which gives us a chance to see how great a guitarist Bernard can be when he doesn't have to worry about singing. Chosen Time and ICB both sound very sharp here as well, both are really superb performances.

The last 3 tunes are my favorites of the entire show by a pretty wide margin though, starting with Everything's Gone Green which features an appearance by Ian's old Vox Phantom guitar - very cool to see, and Bernard sounds especially good on vocals here I'd say. From there they go to an early instrumental version of the superb 'Hurt', one of my all-time favorites and the b-side of Temptation, and early embryonic version of which is what closes out the show next. Hurt goes right into Temptation seamlessly without the band stopping, and this was only the second time that it was ever performed with vocals, I think. It is a very early version, regardless, with very different lyrics from what ended up on the song. I've probably heard NO play this more than any other single song, and this is maybe the greatest single performance of it that I've ever heard - the vocal performance is REALLY striking and unique. The altered lyrics put a totally different spin/complexion on the song, I think.

Really got into Fire Tiger lately, so good! One of those 80s style pop rock bands. Figured there'd be the most overlap of interest in this thread. They've got a nice 2020 album out too. So much cool music out there, it's crazy how much there is. And it's a roll of the dice if I happen to hear about it.

That said, my synthwave list of artists to check out is over a hundred I think, I've gotta catch up.

I've posted it a few times in here, but my own synthwave album is coming together. Here's the current state of it: Mike Saint WIP album

Everything's still a work in progress, but I'm super happy with it so far, and I've commissioned an awesome Australian artist to make a cover: https://twitter.com/Tyson_Elmer

I'm hoping to have it done and then up on music sites before the end of this year. Now I just need to think up a title for the album and the tracks...! I'm so bad at that.
