I remember trump did some dinner for troops & families at the white house and it was over 100 people and they were all white the military is much more racially diverse than the general population fyi so this probably required an extensive effort to accomplish

The military and other forms of civil service are one of the only routes to the middle class in America for poor people, people of color, et al. Conservatives loving absolutely hate this, so the civil service has been continuously denigrated and destroyed so that black men can't get a $70K a year job driving a garbage truck because god forbid they might send their kids to college. Much better to give them military service where they might get killed defending oil profits and their kids don't get poo poo anyway since dad got paid $23K a year. Thanks Uncle Sam, god bless our troops.

It's really interesting how everybody freaks the gently caress out when a miner or factory line worker manages to minmax the OT system and clocks a year when they pull 200k, but nobody says a single thing when a Seattle cop spends far less energy working the system and consistently makes $250,000 because they're counting their time at church and their kid's soccer games as $80/hour overtime

There was that one story where a strapping 27 year old Australian miner put in 100 hour weeks for a year and broke one million dollars AUD income and I swear to god I thought the entire country was going to implode over how mad they were at it. Like, he shortened his lifespan by twenty years in that period. Pay him appropriately.

the military, at least at the enlisted level, is predominantly poor people who believed they were signing up to make a better life while doing something honorable and maybe protecting the weak. they're generally good. contrast to cops, who are predominantly middle class racists who signed up to bully people. it was pretty fuckin blatant in the george floyd protests when they called in the national guard and they were just making barriers and de-escalating while the cops were gassing and shooting everyone in their line of sight
