One thing about Chris Stapleton is that his voice sounds that good live. It is just incredible to hear him sing.

I like sailors guide. I didn’t like sound and fury at all.

When I listened to Sound and Fury I felt like there was an album I really liked under all that production and that maybe in some distant future we'd get more paired down versions of those songs. With the Cutting Grass series (?) being released, I do wonder if we might see something like that much sooner than I expected.

Very sad about Billy Joe Shaver. I knew a tiny bit about him for decades but never really dug in to his recordings until the last few years and he quickly became one of my favorite artists. If you haven't seen his final performance video yet, you need to. I don't think someone could go out on a higher note than that.

That reminds me that I had the most vivid dream about Jerry Lee Lewis having died and I just realized as I was writing this that it was a dream. JLL doesn't get a lot of attention these days for reasons which he totally brought on himself, but if you've never listened to Live At the Star Club you really owe it to yourself to check it out. Not really country
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQfUeLUgjFA

To bring things a little closer to this thread, his 70s country material had some real gems as well.

Edit: What's Made Milwaukee Famous has a fantastic backstory. From Dim Lights, Thick Smoke, Hillbilly Music 1968 liner notes:

They claimed that they don’t do “In Memoriam” in their award shows, but they did tributes to Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels, and Joe Diffie, so.......yeah. gently caress the CMA

The CMA, and really the vast majority of the Nashville industry, is completely focused on how much money you've made them lately. This isn't even a new thing. If anything it's gotten better in the last couple decades after Johnny Cash's late-life resurgence and since the overall industry has become more reliant on their back catalogs.

That doesn't make it any more right, but anyone who expected differently from the CMA's hasn't been paying attention for a looong time.

I don’t know that they were ever particularly vocal about it, but they’re old white country singers not named Willie Nelson, so I presume so.

My dad is a big folkie/old time musician and when I was a kid our family would go see these guys put on their Christmas/mid-winter shows. We also always listened to their records when we’d decorate our Christmas and drink egg nog. Even with the seasonal nostalgia I think these are some of my favorite English folk recordings. Please enjoy

I hadn't heard Lost Dog Street Band before so thank you. To my ear that's more straight up bluegrass n folk, less punk/anarchist than what I was referring to. At least to my untrained ear. I'm referring to more punky stuff like

Days n Daze
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_dT7jttd0s

Mischief Brew
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qhu2L9MHoj0

Ape the State (only 90s kids will get this)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HinxX9gHHao

and these train hoppers Rail Yard Ghosts. The album Hiraeth isn't on youtube at ALL for some reason, but it's amazing and on Bandcamp n spotify.
https://open.spotify.com/album/7o6x554hdxCcIWgd0Drpsf
https://railyardghosts.bandcamp.com/album/hir-th

It's not the clearest example of the music but this video captured something real https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Oj_GSsdQjk

Not punk but this dude Utah Phillips was an amazing storyteller, musician, (train hobo) organizer and human bean. Wish I'd caught him in San Francisco 20 years ago. For his final act he put together a 5 hour songbook of stories and songs, for his grandkids.
