So I posted a while back with regards to a Hip-Hop project I'd started. I intially did this as I'd injured my back and had to shelve my Instruments. So as to avoid going stir crazy I took up something new, in this case rapping and Hip-Hop production. I've since recovered well enough and healed to the point of being able to play guitar/bass and exercise again. I'm tracking out, at the current rate of 1-2 pieces a week, a progressive metal Instrumental Album. It will be a concept release with narration linking the pieces but I've been releasing the demos as I finish them. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV7_Mtf3CEf4PvCkKMsbdrDAnqlrBZoOt

You get THIS https://soundcloud.com/tom-pellegrino-146151417/not-sure-about-this I don't know what the gently caress I was doing, but a Deepmind 12 and a Montage 6 in front of me made something happen. Good evening m’goons. My friends and I had a nerdy progrock band back in 2011 and never finished our first album. We got back together over zoom this week and finished it! It’s been a really nice way to connect with those buds during lockdown. (For fans of King Crimson, Genesis, Animaniguchi) [https://thehadrondelay.bandcamp.com/releases]

Okay this is a sad one. I wrote this song about four years ago when I was approaching the end of a postdoc fellowship and didn't yet have another job lined up, and was contemplating what to do if I wasn't able to continue my academic career. At the same time I was talking to my family back home about how my brother's health was failing, and the abysmal quality of care he was receiving because he had the misfortune of being poor in America's healthcare system. I wrote this song in maybe thirty minutes and recorded it in the voice memos on my iPad so that I'd remember it. It's not precisely about his situation or mine, but it's not NOT about that either. For some reason the other day this song came back into my head, and I thought about rerecording it. When I went back to the iPad recording from four years ago, though, I found that I really liked it despite how noisy and rough it was - there was something about getting it down when all of those feelings were fresh that I really liked. So in the end I just added a bit of piano and a bit of organ to reinforce what was already there; other than that it's what I recorded on the day I wrote it. https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/how-long-can-you-keep-this-going It's gotten a pretty decent response given how rough it is. I should probably post off-the-cuff lo-fi stuff more often.

This happens to me all the time (for my own stuff, not for contracted work); I'll put something down because of a feeling or a bunch of feelings, and it'll be rough and messy, but it'll be honest. And I truly want to fix it up, but then when I start to, it usually takes that feeling out of it, either a bit or by a lot, so I leave it. So I end up with tracks upon tracks that sound true and honest to me, but overall sound like I haven't graduated with honours from a recording arts program. Edit: also, I really like this track. Yeah absolutely. I enjoy the process of arranging music so much that I tend to get very detailed and complex and sometimes forget how effective it can be to just hit record and do something simple and intimate. And thanks!

https://open.spotify.com/artist/5vz6KFisJ3vFbeChiNN7w3?si=CU1Wvjp-SdG4LF1hY3PHoQ Introducing GagReflex - a two-piece bass+drums punk/alt/whatever rock band thing featuring my goon self on drums. Our most recent (and probably last) 5-track EP "What We Owe to Each Other" was finished early this year and we've not been able to play any shows to promote it which sucks butts. I hope you enjoy the internet songs, though. We also put out a 10-track album "A Mouthful of Marbles" a couple of years back which still holds up fairly well imo. Both are on Spotify, along with an EP from a few more years back which... I'm less fond of. You know how it is.

On the topic of Iron & Wine, I had a burned cd I got in 2004 of an album called "Home Recordings," which were his 4track tapes. That was the only album I liked, but I liked it a whole lot as a fan of the low fidelity and raw sound. Not that I disliked his other releases, but none of them were as good as his home recordings. I can't find it anywhere, not on youtube. I probably have the cd out in the garage somewhere but poo poo, no cd player. If you heard it I'm sure you'd like it.

His actual bedroom tapes is what I'm after, the demos of those versions. Anyway, it's just funny to have disappeared from the internet. Maybe I had a rare bootleg release back then, or something. I finger pick classical guitars too so I can appreciate it. I've heard him do a banjo solo here and there, which I think was my first influence to get into the instrument.

I actually finished an album for National Solo Album Writing Month this year. It's sort of based around my memories of working in call centers from 2001-2014. I originally planned to end the album with a 20 minute hardware synth jam, but I just couldn't get one going. Let alone work on my own music. But I'm listening to stuff while I unpack/set up house in my new place today, and I gotta say, CJ, your stuff absolutely rocks. Reminds me a bit of 90's "Outer Limits"-era Voivod, which is absolutely a compliment from this 46 year old metalhead. Can't wait to hear what else I've been missing from my fellow goonsicians!

Here's the track that started it all. https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/sail-or-anchor-1 BTW if y'all are struggling with a mix you should check out Gullfoss.
