Why is it even called a rolling elbow? You don't roll, you spin before doing it. Roaring is cooler, and if you hollar as you do it it at least makes sense.

Japanese doesn't have the /l/ phoneme, so when faced with foreign words that use it, they tend to replace it with /r/, since it's so similar. That's basic phonetics, it's not being unable to differenciate it. Of course, since then it's been used for countless racist jokes, but in this case I think Bam Bam is just laughing at Joey Styles hearing "roaring elbow", thinking it was cool and not realizing it was meant to be "rolling", as in, the person is spinning around before delivering it.

The reality is that in Japan people are plenty aware of it but still get the two mixed up constantly because Romanization is weird for them and not everyone learns it entirely properly. I had many students who would omit the "h" when they were Romanizing something like "Shizuka" and would just write their name as "Sizuka" or whatever. Joey Styles probably was being intentionally racist because he's Joey Styles but it's also totally possible to make that mistake in earnest because Japanese English is often hilarious even today. There was a loving place right near my favorite Okonomiyaki in my small corner of the country that had "Hear Salon" in big letters on their building even though probably fewer than 10 native English speakers had ever gotten a cut there.
