It’s the best of the non Cliff albums, sure but it’s just the best of the worst.

I saw them on the MoP and Justice tours and that Justice show really soured me on them. It felt like bland arena rock and I barely ever listened to them again after that.

First of all, I hate you for seeing them on those tours, but I was born in 86 so...

Secondly, how the gently caress does Justice sound like arena rock? It's one of the most abrasive mainstream metal albums by a mainstream band that's been released. I could understand getting soured from the Black album (mind you, it's a killer pop-metal album, but an appalling thrash metal album) but Justice is fuckin' heavy.

i saw them on the justice tour too as a little kid. looking at video of the puppets era shows apart from the cheaper stage setup and james' voice being more higher pitched it didn't seem that much different from what i remember

Well it’s not Foreigner or anything but didn’t live up to what I was hoping for from Metallica at the time. I still think of it as sounding too slick but honestly I haven’t listened to the whole album in decades. It made them superstars so I guess it worked out well for them but I never get nostalgic for Justice.

New Ecchymosis is up at New Standard Elite's bandcamp as a Name Your Price option. Their last record was an excellent release of extremely disgusting primitive death metal. NSE has a couple of other new releases up as well, Name Your Price.

Justice would have been a better album if the bass was actually audible and the production wasn't so hosed up. James and Lars had some really bad personality streaks back in those days and the whole band was still dealing with losing Cliff. I really wish they'd release a remixed album but I know that would never happen.

Or skip all that and load up Apocalyptica's Metallica covers.

Their songs are way better without lyrics. And idiotic mixing.

I've always thought Hetfield's problem with vocals isnt that hes a bad singer: its that hes a boring singer. Metallica vocals have always just been incredibly dull to me.

The first three albums were purely cellos, then from the fourth they added a drummer, and they had a vocalist on for a little while.

Coincidentally, the first three albums are the best, Cult is just so drat good.

Apocalyptica's newest album is weird because I don't know what it is, but I loved it. There's some sections where the sound gets so drat big that with a good listening situation it grabs and holds and then you want to hear it again.

A lot of people hate when they added drums but I can dig them, for a lot of tracks it works. The only stuff that really turns me off is anything with vocals, it just never works. But with streaming music services it's easy to purge the duds and not be bothered by them.

I prefer them with drums, tbh. Reflections and the S/T are great albums, at least once you switch some of the tracks on the latter to the instrumental versions. I liked a good few tracks they released with different vocalists back in the day*, but I dunno how the gently caress they thought Lauri Ylönen was a good fit.

The new album was a very positive surprise, I'd already written the band off after they started sounding like lovely radio rock with lovely radio rock guest vocalists. The new one sounds a lot like a back-to-the-roots kinda deal.
