Are you lost?

This is the games thread, for Dominions

It might help!

Friends: take a journey with me.

Who am I?

Why, I'm Filthincarnate. But my friends call me "turtle" ;)

We're not going to spend too much time in preamble.

Without further ado, I give you:

"The Ballad of the Flying Brick"

The lights come up and the curtain rolls back, revealing an empty stage. A blank white screen is slowly lowered from the roof: some kind of pulley contraption. A light flickers on behind you and you see words fade into being on the screen. Incredible.....some sort of epigram, for the experience to come. You lean forward, squinting eagerly.

The message before you is this:

turn 1

Here we are. Home sweet home. But what is home?

Ah. Home is a caste-based society of various monkeys and apes, ruled by an aristocratic class of semi-divine celestial beings.

We're not going to meeting many of those monkeys though. This is our first turn of recruitment.

For our first turn of commander recruitment, we're getting this fella. Note that he has the magic leader trait, which is necessary for us. I'll show you why!

These are our cap-only sacreds. We will make as many of them as we can, for a long time. They're really good. Note the awe. Their main problem typically is: they're naked. Our bless should let us mitigate that, but only time will tell.

This is our research. The Flying Brick will be researching this turn, since we can't see what indies there are until next turn, and we're not risking a load-bearing pretender on a blind expansion.

That's the turn. A humble start, for a humble nation :)

turn 2

Turn 2. Basically everyone got a prophet, looks like. Traditionally, everyone gives their prophets funny names, and in a sslp typically one would go through and look at the funny prophet names and laugh, and joke, etc.

But I don't want to, so we won't! :)

Instead we're moving out the Flying Brick to his first province. It's in our dominion, so he'll enjoy the benefit of his fortitude/blood surge bless. It ought to make him very durable!

For our commander recruitment, we're getting one of these fellows. We won't make a whole lot of these guys, because they're expensive for what they are and also I don't like their randoms in JBBM very much. But we're making one this turn and we'll make a few more.

In looking at the world map, I think I've located our first neighbor! Can you guess who it is?

Hint: there's only one cave on the world map! :)

That's the turn! Incredible.....a humble continuation, for a humble thread. :)

turn 3

Now we're cooking with gas.

Remember that Gukya General we recruited? We made him our prophet! And gave him a funny name. All Hail A Plate Glass Window, Prophet of the Flying Brick.

Hee hee :)

I wonder how the Flying Brick did?

Mmmm. Seems good!

Let's take a closer look.

There he is, our beautiful boy. :)

Looking good, feeling #blessed.

The hapless independents.

These boys look poorly trained!

How will they fare in a fight?

Looks like: poorly!

How much damage did they do, to The Flying Brick? :ohdear:

Ah. A single point of damage. Brutal.

What else happened this turn?

Seems good. Anything else?

Hmm! Seems promising. Let's take a look.

A handsome fellow. I hope he enjoys reading books! Because that's most of what he'll be doing :)

Our research is a runaway freight train.

Now that we've got our prophet, he's leading a force of yavanas and taking our starting army to spread the good word, about this new god, The Flying Brick.

The Flying Brick is also visiting a new place. I hope everyone has fun! :)

This was a weird game to be in. Curious to see how it looked from a turtle's eyes.

Also wow, getting the national hero on turn 3. And casual +1 air gem per turn forever in the capital too. An auspicious beginning for an inauspicious nation.

ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!
In EA and MA I've personally found the bandar archers to be easily massed and useful for early expansion. They're cheap enough that losses are easily replaced unless you have poo poo scales, you can flood the battlefield with arrows that tear through lightly armoured indies, most enemy nations you might accidentally bump usually don't have heavy armor unless they're EA Abysia or MA Ulm, and if something survives the arrows they pack a decent punch with their maces in melee.

Also I was virtuous Abysia in this one.

Generally people seem to agree that EA Abysia isn't too great, and it certainly isn't when I'm behind the wheel.

turn 4

turn 4 already. We had a couple fights, I wonder how they went.

The Flying Brick is very consistent. From here on out I'm not gonna show you every time he slaughters a bunch of indies and receives like one point of damage, due to being incredibly durable, since it would be repetitive.

We also had another fight. This one involved our starting army (insanely bad) and our first crew of sacreds, plus our prophet. Looks like it went okay, let's get into details.

Looks like I hosed up some screenshots, but here's the army in action. There were indies, they get punched.

We also had a single casualty, I wonder what that's about.

Ah. "Profuse Bleeding", eh. Is that good?

Seems like "no".

He dies. Oh well.

Either way, a successful double expansion on t3.

Let's aim for a repeat performance. We're hungry for gold, as you can see, and moving very fast.

Mercwise the ship wreckers are on sale but we'd have to skip a full turn of cap recruitment (both commanders and troops) to even be competitive, so it's not in our price range atm, alas.

Did anything else happen this turn?

gross

GROSS

Look at him. He's on the far right there, the messed up little weirdo.

turn 5

We double-expanded last turn, or tried to. Let's take a look.

Heavy Cav are no match, for the "Brick Wall" (the cool name my fortitude/blood surge sacreds have given themselves, in line formation)

Let's watch.

Heavy Cav indies are often the bane of expansion parties/awake expanders.

They're pretty good, see. Their first attack gets a lance bonus charge based on idk speed or something, they hit like trucks, is the point.

In this case they hit like a truck into a brick wall, and die. We take no losses.

Recruitable from the heavy cav prov? These guys:

This will, btw, be the only prov we find all game that makes these guys. We will basically make one a turn forever.

Scouts are very important, idk if you "noobs" are using them, but: use them, imo.

Meanwhile, the Flying Brick:

The Flying Brick kicks rear end dude. Just great.

Meanwhile we've got another expansion party queued up. This one's just a guhyaka general leading a crew of yavanas. Very straightforward.

Bad event, so what.

We're moving to triple-expand this turn, as the early-game powerhouse nation of Kailasa is routinely known to do.

In looking at our map, we notice something.

anyway. The Flying Brick doesn't have an easy target in his dominion right now so here's how we're expanding.

A mere double-expand, not triple, out of an abundance of caution. The Flying Brick is loadbearing so we're not going to risk him stupidly.

Mmkay.

So unlike a lot of other people in the community, who get involved in multiple games at once (sometimes, like, up to twenty, which is insane to think about, to me), I have a strict "One-Game Policy", i.e. I only ever play one game at a time. Since a multiplayer game of dominions routinely lasts for months, that means that despite having played mostly continuously in this community for idk five or so years, I've probably played less than twenty total games.

But since I'm only playing one game at a time, and taking, at most, one turn every 24 or 48 hours, I have a lot of time to think about details, implementation, and diplomacy.

It's nice, very relaxing, imo. Sort of like chess-by-mail. :)

Anyway I've never done another SSLP and I probably never will; I don't really like gloating postmortems etc (it seems in poor taste to mock your friends, especially after beating them), but I figured that this one would be at the very least mechanically interesting, so this project is sort of here to give a more comprehensive record of my thinking than I usually display.

I hope you find it interesting! Though you are, of course, free not to :)

The more games you're in, the more games you can theoretically win, though. So far it's potentially possibly working out for me. I mean, I've won three whole times.

Plus it helps make people aware of my personal "brand" as a very cool and awesome gamer that they should ally with and bribe in every game they possibly can. It even works, sometimes.

I also wouldn't worry about it coming off as gloating or mocking, in my opinion, it's a game and I feel like the community as a whole is good at treating it as such. I don't get the feeling that any wins or losses tend to engender hard feelings of any kind, and we're usually capable of taking a decent ribbing. Personally I take every loss as a chance to learn what my opponent did that was smarter than what I did.

filthincarnate/turtle here alluded to this already, so I am playing EA Ermor (it's Rome) with this big guy, the chicken titan, as my pretender:

The Great Archon here is a fairly new pretender chassis, added in the last year or so, that as I understand it has to do with the legend of the Demiurge in Gnosticism, or something. I took him as an awake expander because
1) what the hell it's a giant man with a chicken head and snakes for legs,
2) he's got fairly good combat stats and equipment and can expand pretty reliably - that Scourge of Power hits twice every time it attacks!,
3) he's got the Inspirational Researcher trait at +2(!) that gives 2 whole extra research points to every researching mage in the same province, which is a pretty huge boost if you stack your researchers together, and
4) he's got an Alchemist bonus that gives 100% extra gold from the spells that convert Fire and Earth gems into gold. Just a lot going on with this guy that ensures he'll be useful in some fashion at every stage of the game.
but really it's a big chicken man. this is the most important part.

There are definitely a lot of independents it can't handle on its own, since it doesn't have AOE attacks or fear aura like some better expanders (for instance, the Flying Brick with a huge fear aura) it struggles against groups of more than 30 or 40 guys, or ones that hit particularly hard. It's still quite effective, especially with a few bodyguards, which I'm pretty sure I used extensively in this game - Ermor gets very good heavy infantry units that work pretty well in this role. The bless I used certainly doesn't help at all with its own expansion, so you could focus more on that as well.

I also forgot most of how to play since then too so I was basically learning as I went this game since there aren't a ton of guides for dom5. This is the idea. We're skipping a turn of cap mage recruitment but if we can get them it will be worth it; the ship wreckers consistently pay for themselves.

Agartha's having trouble in expansion, looks like. Good news for us.

As I already mentioned here's Marv, with his awake-expander god. Maybe we'll see it in action one day.

Random event.

Throne event.

Double expanding this turn. The Flying Brick will be back in action, gasp, out of friendly dom, but the prov in question is so weak it shouldn't matter. Meanwhile we're consolidating our forces in the northeast.

Weak people spend 10 dollars to gift titles about world leaders they dislike. The strong spend 10 dollars to gift titles telling everyone to play Deus Ex again

filthincarnate/turtle here alluded to this already, so I am playing EA Ermor (it's Rome) with this big guy, the chicken titan, as my pretender:

I love seeing what other people do with nations I've played. When I played EA Ermor I did a full imprisoned rainbow bless because their sacred horsemen are so good and ended up winning that one but I can see the value of the extra research this guy gives too. I don't think he existed when I played as them. Interested in seeing how well it expanded.

I love dominions LPs. The game itself is too wonky but I really enjoy the lore and strategy. Thanks for doing this!

He seems pretty good as an expander for the EA (19 prot is plenty against Joe Spearman), but I'd be wary of sending him off without a token hat. Also quiet lol at these scales for EA Ermor. Winter's going to be fun for you.

turn 8

As you can see, Sauro bribed me to leave their cap circle. We'll get to that in a second.

But first:

We've recruited our first Yaksha. These guys are our bread and butter. They're not StR and our main gold priority is being able to afford to recruit one per turn for the rest of the game.

Anyway. Sauro.

I left a little pd so we're gonna look at Sauro's reclamation party.

The leader.

The troops.

The bless.

The title of the image file above is something like "look at this dumb rainbow". I do not wish to disparage my comrades-in-arms, but: it's a dumb rainbow.

Basically I don't like rainbow blesses, I know they're all the rage in some communities, but imo they generally indicate a scattershot, unfocused strategy, and are ineffective against someone who has an actual plan.

Anyway looking at the bless paths i expect they're gonna sprint for foul vapors. we'll find out i suppose.

What else.

I spied on Marverni's god for you voyeurs.

My goodness.

Ten earth. My goodness. Look at the prot.

Doing one damage just pisses it off.

hmmm. i wonder if there were any opportunity costs, for this behemoth?

I see.

By the battle's end. 36 prot is a lot, but note the fatigue score, even after a quick fight: it's quite exploitable.

hmmm.

imgur's kicking back rn so i'll finish this post later.

we've got a little left in the turn. to be continued

Spewing insults, pissing off all your neighbors, betraying your allies, backing out of treaties and accords, and generally screwing over the global environment?
ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!
Does the hard skin even still do anything once you've got that much prot from the Earth magic? I remember it has some diminishing returns going on.

it absolutely does its just flat +5 natural prot

Never trust a bird.
On one hand, wow that is a lot of points in one pig, and hard skin isn't the greatest bless for any of your non-pretender units.

On the other hand, imagine sending a pile of vanheres or big fuckoff giants towards marverni, only for their blows to bounce harmlessly off of adamantine-hard pig flesh as they are slowly crushed to death beneath it's trotters.

Fun Shoe
The big source of diminishing returns is when you're stacking natural prot on top of armor. Like, if you somehow gave that boar blacksteel armor (~20 prot) then its total prot would go from 36 natural prot to something like 37 or maybe 38.

I think Sauro's rainbow actually looks fine. There are plenty of nations where rainbows aren't really going to be viable but sacred cav is usually a good vehicle for them and it's a pretty well designed bless without a lot of dead weight.

rainbow blesses are good, mostly because you can imprison your god for better scales and still get the bless benefits while they're sleeping, and a bunch of minor combat bonuses add up to a lot especially for a nation with a wide variety of sacreds. This is not an awake expander though so I understand your hesitation

Awake expanders are overrated. I can't think of a single game in which I've taken one. Give me those extra build points for better scales, porfa.

Marverni has half-decent cap sacreds AND summonable ones that both have the downside of going into battle almost naked so the prot bless can justify itself beyond making King Pig more durable. Larger OTOH... well I guess it also helps the Great Boars commanders thugging it out, albeit at the cost of loving both the human sacreds and the littler piggies over.

Yeah, also on paper Sauro has both a) expensive but very good cap troops/mages that make scales attractive and b) bad magic path intensity outside of death (and nature 2) so a god that can sitesearch a decent starter income in all the paths they have only 1 on their native mages is a decent idea as it can then go back to the lab, forge a few boosters to start the mooks remote sitesearching in earnest and get a lot of different balls rolling at once. Maybe imprisoned is too late for that though, idk

Filthincarnate was scarred very early in their career by the Stallion of Ulm and will never be caught without an awake expander again.

The Sauro bless is okay, in a vacuum, but it does suggest you have some imprisoned dom 1 nerd which isn't a very good club to ward off certain kinds of attacks with.

Presumably the boar bless is so he has a million +5 prot Larger trample boards as Marv tho

The cap only healer guys were my main reason for taking the inspirational leader bless, I recruited as many as possible since you can get Ermor's actual mages from any fort and I had a shitload of them running around healing guys and ferrying my legions. Recruitable healers are really good
