:siren: UKMT Solidarity Fund Monthly Update - 1st 3rd December 2020 :siren:

Thanks to generous goons for ensuring we ran a surplus this month!

A few points of fund-related news:

1) Due to Paypal rules on donations requiring us to provide a company registration number, we've been looking into the possibility of registering the Fund as a community interest company (CIC). However, on closer examination, this seems unsuitable for us; switching to a CIC model would require us to register a new company, do some legal legwork to combine it with the Fund as it currently exists, and appoint one or more directors who would have complete legal control of the fund; they are designed to be run as businesses, albeit with the proceeds going to benefit the community.

Instead we're going to press ahead with the alternative which is to register with the Charities Commission, which will give us a charity number to provide to Paypal and hopefully keep them off our (treasurer's) back.

2) In order to make any changes to make the operation of the Fund, or to update the Constitution to something the Charities Commission will be likely to approve, we need to resolve a longstanding issue with said Constitution - namely the bar to passing votes, which currently requires a two thirds or simple majority of the entire membership (not just those members who participate in the vote) - a functionally impossible bar to clear, considering the membership requirement is "be a goon who reads the UKMT". Whoops, my bad. We've figured out how to fix this, though, and I'll be laying the details out in a later post.

3) Next month will be election time for the Solidarity Fund committee! The election will be announced in the thread at the start of January. There will be a one-week period for nominations and then a week of voting (unless there were 5 or fewer nominations - full details are in the Constitution, part 2 section 6). So keep an eye out for that.

Interestingly I did a retweet the other day which has a video, and my tweet has almost 60,000 impressions, and ~350 retweets.

It has *11* media clicks from all of that. And it doesn't even have subtitles (though the important bit of what's being said is in the body of the tweet itself).

Given that I'm reasonably sure you need to click on the vid to get the sound, almost 100% of people who saw this did not listen to the sound. Just thought that was really interesting.

No it's still the dream unless you're an industrial consumer of electricity in which case your pricing is based more-or-less on consumption of available capacity, rather than number of kWh.
Distributed energy storage and buy/sell at individual user level could be such a huge win for energy efficiency but we're still a way off it because of the changes needed to move the juice around and manage side effects.
What happens, for example, if every Tesla in the UK starts with the same default setting for when it buys power and they all switch in at once? We've learnt this lesson once already- economy7 caused grid problems because it meant all the really high load appliances switched on at precisely the same time.

To continue this point, the switching behaviours required to balance the grid at micro and macro level rely entirely on smart meters being in place. There’s no way around it. You want to balance your Solar, Ground Source Heat Pumps, Electric Vehicles and still have everyone getting power? Needs to be balanced.

Want to sell your battery contents (either fixed or EV) through an aggregator working as a virtual peaking station? Needs a smart meter.

So this flew a bit under the radar (at least for me) but apparently the Resident Labour Market Test is being abolished! That's pretty great news for job-seeking migrants, it's by far the most onerous immigration requirement for workers.

There's still the cost (~8-12k for five years not counting lawyer fees and aditional dependents), sponsorship requirements (basically a lot of paperwork about employee attendence and performance that employers have to fill out) and the time it takes to apply, but it's a significant step forward.

I'll be back
chapter 35 of Polly's Keir Starmer fanfiction, wherein the evil Boris Johnson is defeated because he misunderstands trade rules, to do nothing is the highest form of courage, and Keir has never made a booboo

quote:

The upcoming deal will spectacularly fail that test: voting for it risks Starmer’s reputation for straight-dealing ... Looking back, it will seem clear that an opposition should have opposed it. Abstention is not pusillanimous, but the only honourable option.
...
Of course, Labour could be obliged to vote for it and save the nation if a humiliated Johnson can’t stop his MPs voting it down. But that’s unlikely; and to vote for this atrocious deal in any other circumstance would be Starmer’s first serious mistake.

Smart meters as a technology are a good thing, it's just the fact that privatisation has messed up the deployment of them because different companies used different technologies which weren't compatible for the first round, and then they've dragged their heels to bring out the newer ones which do actually work together (sometimes).

I do find the conspiracy theory that "smart meters will allow energy companies to charge you more" funny though. Incorrect bills from estimated reads create significantly more work and cost more money for energy companies, which is then passed on to the customer to offset that loss. I know a lot of people here seem to give reads every month and are responsible about it but unfortunately the vast majority of people are utterly poo poo with it and never submit reads, then complain when their estimates are wildly inaccurate.

As someone who works in an energy company, it's all dumb and there is literally no reason for this industry to be privatised. Everyone needs energy, it's just same poo poo different bucket.

I submitted a request to move my power supply to my new place yesterday and there was a big warning in the process that if the new flat has a smart meter from another company it won't work.

A free market in electricity might make some sense if they were offering some different form of electricity. Edison is offering 120V DC, but Westinghouse is offering 240V AC, but Duracell is offering 1.5V DC, who won? You decide!

500 brokers offering the exact same poo poo from the exact same grid via a variety of different financial schemes makes no sense though.
