I think the first few seasons were really trying to reach that next level, and could get a bit weirder and darker. Then it settled into a pleasant mediocrity with the same familiar bag of tricks. I still like the show, but most of my favorite episodes are from the first 3-4 seasons.

Yes, it started as sort of tongue-in-cheek parodies of musical theater. But it gets to be way too much in the more recent seasons, like all of the writers dream of working on Broadway and each episode is their stealth musical pitch.

Then they took it to whole new level with Central Park

Oof, I think I've posted the youtubes in this thread before but it's loving dire.

Bob's Burgers songs are a million times better because the cast does not have generic Broadway star voices, so it's at least charmingly weird.

I enjoyed the earlier seasons where there were actually jokes

The last few seasons are just mostly 'wacky situations' which just gets old after awhile.

At first I thought this Cage guy was someone involved in that Last of Us game series because they captured Page's likeness kind of weirdly but no there is another game creeping on him I see? gross.

In the original version they were threatened with litigation because the model demoed in early trailers was just straight up, 100%, unmistakably just Page and the character's name was Ellie.

My dude was right to sic the lawyers on them. poo poo was blatant.

I hadn’t watched the show in a while, but now I’m working through it in order on Hulu. I’m on season 6 and I’m already noticing a drop in quality. Pretty much any episode that leans on some sort of random contrived competition is a hard pass for me at this point. The one with the battle royale on Fischoeder’s estate is awful.

Pretty much all comedy now is just vaguely wacky/silly situations, instead of actually crafted jokes with setups and payoffs. Comedy writing is a lost art.

Have you seen the original? I had a Toxic Avenger coloring book as a kid and it blew my mind when I got a copy of the movie as a teenager, it's one of the most violent movies ever made.

This is like making a PG-13 remake of Robocop.

We used to go to my nana's every Friday and we'd hit up the video store around the corner to get a rental for the kids and one for the adults. One time we rented a Toxic Avenger movie because us kids liked the show.

Probably less than ten minutes after leaving my dad was back angrily exchanging it.

A decade or so later a bunch of us watched all the Toxic Avengers at college and I realized we had rented the third movie all those years ago (my dad stopped the movie shortly after someone was brutally shot in fittingly a video store).
