Lately I have encountered many many posts here about financial stress, wanting to quit, unemployment, trying to find work, transitioning to WFH, etc. So I thought it might be helpful to have a thread where we discuss money making, resource scrounging, (un)employment, career changes, things of that nature. Vent about your job, or lack thereof. Even if you are a privileged golden computer-toucher. Things ain't getting better any time soon, or likely ever. We already know that. Economy's hosed, and as usual, austerity is the only item on the menu. So let's talk about how to survive the remaining few months/years, until the human race finally manages to extinguish itself in a brilliant blaze of malicious stupidity.

My intention is for this to be a somewhat helpful and encouraging thread. Broader than the unionizing thread, but more specific and practical than doomsday econ. General work ethics discussion is cool, but I will kindly request that we try not to personally attack posters in this thread for their particular job, education, or financial situation.

PART ONE: MAKE MONEY

There are many ways to make money. Most of them loving suck. :capitalism:

The suggestions below are perhaps preferable to starving or freezing to death, depending on your own personal code of ethics. That is your decision to make.

I'm throwing in everything I can think of, but obviously this isn't exhaustive. I'm in the US, so some of these suggestions/terms might be US-only. Contributions from other countries are of course welcome too.

I ASSURE YOU THAT NONE OF THE LINKS IN THIS OP ARE REFERRAL LINKS. I'M NOT THAT SHAMELESS

Before we get into all the rest of it, you might want to check out the Steady app. I'm mixed about it, I find it kind of annoying and intrusive, but also a decent general resource. It bridges a lot of the categories below, so I wasn't sure where to stick it. Fairly useful for looking up jobs, assistance programs, all kinds of stuff. They claim to be "building a better financial future for the global workforce." Naturally I'm skeptical. But you may find some use in it.

:siren:Those of you who are considering jobs that involve being indoors and/or interacting with other people might want to check this informative post in the covid thread regarding respirators:siren:

Ridesharing
Never done it and I'm not endorsing it during a pandemic, so I'm not going to bother compiling links here. But it's a potential option I guess, if you have a vehicle. If someone else wants to write up info about it, I'll edit it in.

Food/Grocery/Alcohol Delivery & Gig Jobs
Only really an option if you have a vehicle (and even then it's never really a great option) It varies a lot by region, see what's available in your area. I haven't personally done any delivery gigs so I can't give much insight on these, sorry.

Online Freelance Task / Gig / 1099 Work
  • Fiverr: Sell your freelance services (art, writing, video editing, programming, etc)
  • MTurk: Amazon's marketplace for crowdsourcing tasks (research studies, image labeling, etc)
  • Prolific: academic surveys, similar to MTurk but pays better
  • Rev: Transcription and closed captioning
  • Appen: freelance projects, "micro tasks," surveys, data collection
  • Upwork: more skilled/professional level freelance stuff
  • FreeUp: similar to Upwork
  • Paro: accounting, tax and finance stuff
  • Stable Soapbox: (Australia) paid surveys and discussions
I personally use MTurk and Rev, no experience with the other ones.

You may also consider offering your services, whatever they may be, on local networks like NextDoor, Craigslist, etc.

Paid Surveys/Product Reviews
Sometimes these pay out in gift cards instead of cash.

Traditional W2 Employment
Are you interested in lining the pockets of a small business tyrant? Or perhaps feeding chunks of your flesh directly into the gaping maw of a vast faceless corporation?
  • LinkedIn: gently caress me I hate this site, but it's widely used. You should probably make a basic profile there if you're job-hunting. They have a job search too.
  • Indeed: I've been mainly using this so far. It has a decent resume builder and it's a relatively painless site to use
  • ZipRecruiter: it's ok, but more annoying than Indeed
  • Amazon Jobs: :chloe:
  • Remote.co: remote jobs search, mostly professional stuff like healthcare, accounting, etc
  • Robert Half: office and computer toucher jobs. lots of temp poo poo. tech/IT, marketing, accounting, and administrative
  • Flexjobs: This is, amazingly, a paid subscription remote job search. Is it worth it? I have no idea, but I find the very concept of it delightfully bold EDIT: NOT WORTH IT
  • Glassdoor: Job search, also good for looking up company reviews and salaries
  • CareerBuilder: another job search
  • SimplyHired: yet another job search
  • Monster: another job search that's still around I guess
  • Angel.co: job search focused on tech and startups
  • USA Jobs: work for the gubmint
  • USPS: post office jobs
  • UPS: they're teamsters so I threw them in
  • National Park Service: Jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities. May include a place to live, if you're footloose and willing to move
  • Don't forget to check for local resources. In the US, your state and/or county may have a job site. This is probably where you'll find any local gov jobs
  • CHECK YOUR LOCAL UNIONS. Even (or perhaps especially) the ones that rep jobs you don't know how to do, like trade skills. Some of them have paid apprenticeship or free tuition programs.

Tax Refunds (US only)
I have one question for you. Do you typically get a big tax refund?
  • If you don't - doesn't hurt to double check that poo poo. Make sure you are getting all of your credits and deductions.
  • If you do - awesome, right? NO. It's not awesome. You just gave the government an interest-free loan, you dumbass, you loving rube. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Calculator to figure out what it should be, don't just guess. If you are already employed, fill out a new W9*. This should increase your take-home pay, which is also useful for such things as suckering a mortgage broker into giving you a bigger loan than you can actually afford (ask me how I know, lmao)
*Warning, this may seriously backfire on you later - no more refunds, and you may end up owing some back at tax time if your income changes. I am just a mentally ill babby accountant, please do not heed my financial advice without doing your own research or consulting an expert

Sell Your Body
While selling your flesh is technically illegal in many places, good news! There are some convenient exceptions and loopholes that you can take advantage of.
  • Sell plasma
  • Sell sperm or egg(s)
  • Be a surrogate womb
  • Sell your hair
  • Sell your used panties or underwear
  • Subject yourself to medical research
  • Make porn, and note that "porn" does not have to include sex or even nudity if it is some real hard to find niche fetish poo poo like, idk, stepping on cupcakes or something

Sell Stuff (Your Own Stuff, or Someone Else's)
Are you burdened with a surplus of material goods that can be sold? Are you crafty? How do you feel about picking through thrift stores, estate sales, dumpsters, and curbs for things you can sell? The coming wave of death will part many mortals from their worldly possessions. Seize their abandoned goods and profit from their misfortune.
  • Local sales on Craigslist or FB or OfferUp, which is basically Craigslist by another name. At your own peril.
  • eBay: Sell anything basically. Did you know you can buy fertilized chicken eggs on there to hatch yourself? Cool poo poo.
  • Etsy: Arts and crafts stuff. You can sell weird poo poo like rocks and bones and sea shells on here
  • Being an Amazon Seller is kind of interesting because you can ship your inventory to Amazon, and they'll store it, then pack/ship it for you when it sells
  • Try out some retail arbitrage, where you buy discounted clearance rack stuff and flip it elsewhere for a higher price.
  • There's also drop-shipping, which is a slightly different flavor of middle-manning.
  • Artist? Sell art commissions on DeviantArt or furry porn on FurAffinity
  • Writer? Holy poo poo whip out some sexy erotica short stories and self publish them. They don't have to be good. Look at Chuck Tingle.
  • Order bulk items for dirt cheap from Aliexpress. Wait ~6 months for those items to arrive. Hopefully they are the correct items, in the correct amount, or at least something of roughly equal value. As your reward for your patience and willingness to gamble on sketchy foreign shippers, you may now resell those items at a huge profit on Amazon, Walmart.com, eBay, etc. I hear that running ads on Facebook or IG is quite effective if you have an eye catching product. In this way you too may enjoy a small taste of how it feels to run a sweatshop

Internet Busking and Begging
There are numerous ways to pester internet strangers for their spare change.
  • Our very own goonbux fund, of course, for comrades truly in need
  • GoFundMe: Publicize your sob story, perhaps people will take pity on you.
  • Twitch, Youtube, and other live streaming services. There's a lot to unpack here, but in short: probably not worth your time. Barrier to entry can be quite high and the success rate quite low.
  • Kickstarter: if you have a legit cool idea, why not try? I've seen some neat stuff come out of Kickstarter

Turn Yourself Into A Subscription Service
Twitch lets you do this, but there's also:

Monetization
Make the world a slightly worse place by inflicting advertising on people in exchange for fractions of pennies
  • Upload some Youtube videos
  • Google AdSense: Run a bunch of ads on a stolen recipe blog or something, idk

Churning Bank Accounts & Credit Cards
Banks and credit card companies will sometimes pay you money for opening accounts with them. Make sure you can meet their terms (the bank ones usually involve x total direct deposits in a certain period, or something like that), then sign up and wait for your free money. After you get the reward, feel free to close the account. Bank churning doesn't gently caress with your credit score too much as far as I know, but credit card churning definitely will, in case you give a poo poo

Become a Degenerate Gambler
Snuffle for the crumbs that fall at the feet of our tyrants. It is possible to begin with a very small investment and trade your way up to a fortune, but it is highly risky and stressful. Consider learning about options trading. Also, Robinhood has some kind of newfangled fractional shares so that even poors can buy $AMZN or $TSLA
https://i.imgur.com/BpwSkEA.mp4

So there's a start. I have more sections planned for Part One:
  • Government programs and other socialist poo poo
  • Learn New Things For FREE (certifications, etc)
  • WFH tips
  • whatever the hell else I can think of or someone else contributes

PART TWO: SAVE MONEY will cover stuff like budgeting, saving, investing, and ways to reduce or eliminate expenses

Also, can someone please insert snoo into the following gif? tia :)

edit: oh god I have to look at that loving gif looping every time I edit this post, gently caress

Haven't used MTurk in like 5 years, I logged in recently and at some point it was suspended for inactivity. Emailed them to ask for reactivation, but they won't respond.

From what I saw, it looks like 2-3 years ago they purged inactive accounts.

If you're feeling amoral, start a dark money superpac and buy some targeted facebook ads demanding donations to stop the steal, build up an email list, sell it on, buy email lists from other amoral grifters,.and just keep on trumping, you could probably make a decent living taking meemaw's social security check

SUCK LASER, COPPERS

Three cool grifter things that work:

Find a market research company in your area. This usually only works if you live in a relatively large city I think, but I dunno. Give them your email address. I get at least a few emails per month from the company here looking for people that fit various criteria to test new cleaning products or lotions or whatever. Usually it's video conferencing or in-home product use only now, but you still get like $150 or whatever.

Start filling out as many class action lawsuit claims as you can. Don't fill them out if you don't qualify, because that's fraud. But a whole lot of them don't require any proof or purchase...... There are a couple websites and email lists you can sign up for that just dump the latest suits to your inbox every week so they're easy to track. This is not something that will get you money right away, though. Some of these take literal years to get to you, but most take 8 months or so. Still, when you get a random check in the mail it's a fun day. I know someone who's gotten $8k just from class actions over a decade or so. Make those loving companies give you some of your money back, hell yeah.

Turn into one of those coupon people. You don't have to go crazy and end up with a full basement of poo poo and binders of coupons or anything, but you can get a lot of stuff like toiletries and junk food for free and donate or help friends with whatever you don't need. I recommend doing it at CVS to take advantage of their extra care bucks for free poo poo, or just do the mail-in-rebates at Menard's to get a bunch of free poo poo for less work than that. Luckily this is something that a lot of people already do and there are entire ~systems~ people have created for this poo poo, so just find one on slickdeals.net's forums and grift away.

Alternate universe serious answer: politely wait for a lull in the customers (or if there isn't one, yeah stand awkwardly in line, or better yet, come back at a less busy time). Ask if there is an application to fill out, or if they would like a resume. Maybe introduce yourself to the manager if they're not busy. Based on my limited experience yes and no. The platforms themselves are usually transparent but also don't really seem to care about protecting anyone. On MTurk this means that the money earned for a task will be the money you get, but some people post tasks that just pay insanely low amounts, and some people will post tasks and lie about their duration. For Mturk this is resolved by user implemented rating systems where mturkers rate requesters based on how well they pay etc. So if you go in blindly, you will probably not do great, but if you join some MTurk communities, get the right scripts etc. it shouldn't be too risky.

EditL this is one of those websites for MTurk: https://turkerview.com/requesters/

I can go into detail about MTurk and Rev at least

MTurk: It's legit, it's Amazon. I've been doing it since like 2017? Maybe earlier? So I'm not sure what it's like to sign up for now. Payout time for each individual job varies, but it's usually pretty quick. Could be instant, could take a few days, rarely takes a few weeks. Once you get paid for the job, it lands in your MTurk account. You can get paid out from there a few different ways, at intervals. I have it go to my Paypal every 3 days, which is the minimum interval. I think you can do Amazon credit or bank deposit too.

You'll want to run an extension to help. I use MTurk Suite to help me search/scan for good tasks (called HITs, which I think means human intelligence task) and see red flags on bad HITs. I cherry pick based on the pay ($.10/min is my usual minimum) and the ratings of that HIT/requester, if there are any yet

You start with a lovely selection of jobs and more open up as you gain qualifications. Some qualifications are automatic, like your number of approved HITs. Some have to be applied for. Some require you to pass a test or screener. The coveted one is the Master's Qualification, which is granted by Amazon itself, apparently at whim. No one knows what the exact criteria are, but it appears that you need something like 2,000+ HITs, 99%+ approval rating, and completing a broad range of different types of HITs including the lovely penny tasks. Master's apparently unlocks the big money tasks.

There's a lot of luck involved even when you get in the upper tiers. Some days are better than others.

Some of the tasks are pretty strange. One of my early ones was helping to burying bad press about Elon in Google search results. I got paid $15 for taking pictures of my feet once, that was cool.

Rev: Also legit. Pays out through Paypal only. It's just transcription of audio/video files, and closed captioning of video files, which also involves syncing the transcription and formatting it differently. You don't need any special equipment or software. They have a pretty good setup for both built into their site, with very thorough keyboard shortcuts. It's also kind of a tiered system based on minutes complete and your grading (all of your work gets graded.) I found it easy to get the hang of, and enjoyable to do in short bursts

Edit: I should add that they're both fairly low paying given the time involvement. On a good day I might grab $50-60 on MTurk. I'm not Master's but I do have a ton of qualifications. I like Rev a bit more, and it's less luck-based and weirdly random than MTurk, but find it more difficult to do for longer periods, so I usually max out at about $20-30 on there before I give up and go do something else. Ymmv.

The best thing was MTurking during idle time at my old office job. Slyly working a 2nd job right there under the boss's nose, unbeknownst to her

Edit 2: Correction, the best thing was MTurking on the toilet at my old office job, getting paid twice to poo poo

This is a good point I should have mentioned. Sometimes you just lose out and there's nothing you can really do about it. For example, the survey bugs out partway through, and then you can't access it again or turn in the HIT. A lot of the research study ones are crudely made, sometimes the poo poo just breaks. You can try to contact the requester but they may or may not care or be able to do anything about it.

In my experience it's kind of rare for a requester to stiff you for honest work. You can block out lovely requesters with bad ratings or tasks you hate

You can "unaccept" HITs too, so you can at least back out without damaging your ratings if poo poo goes south, like the survey breaking example.

to be honest with you, I've never really done any kind of work like this before, so I'm just a touch worried I'm not qualified for any of this, but when you're desperate...

You'll want to run an extension to help. I use MTurk Suite to help me search/scan for good tasks (called HITs, which I think means human intelligence task) and see red flags on bad HITs. I cherry pick based on the pay ($.10/min is my usual minimum) and the ratings of that HIT/requester, if there are any yet

how in the gently caress do you install this? I'm using Firefox

edit: forget it, went to use the older version instead, not loving around with building JARs or whatever

Looks like I am running MTurk Suite v2.6.14, which is probably old

Adding another place to sell your stuff
  • OfferUp: Basically Craigslist by another name

Bank churning doesn't gently caress with your credit score too much as far as I know, but credit card churning definitely will.

Since the pandemic started, the lines of people turning in cans and bottles at recycling centers to get the $0.05 deposit have gotten very long

2000 cans = $100.00

Hanging out around football games is usually the easiest way to get cans, but in the age of COVID that's probably a bad idea for a lot of reasons

Hmmm. Have you considered becoming a politician, lawyer, or financial accountant?

Some places buy aluminum by weight. When I lived with a bunch of drunks, I used to save their cans and drag em down to the recycling place for cash.

Price varies but I bet it's pretty high now, I heard there's an aluminum shortage

Scrapping metals can be profitable. Beer cans are starter level. Start pulling copper out of walls and air conditioning units, then you'll really see the money roll in

Edit: I see at least one dude cruising around in his truck on large trash pickup days, scooping up old metal appliances and poo poo to scrap. I always thought that was pretty resourceful

yeah if you're thinking food service, they pretty much want you to show up 2-4pm. it's possible you do the full interview right then

Yep, come in during the dead period between lunch rush and evening dining. Try not to come in during the morning, we generally do a lot of food prep and cleaning in the mornings and everyone's busy.

Hypothetically, would it be possible to train a gtp-3 bot to work 24/7 on a simple MTurk task as a source of passive income (even if it's a pittance)?
