https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1264996588834996226 Lately I have encountered many many posts here about financial stress, wanting to quit, unemployment, trying to find work, transitioning to WFH, etc. So I thought it might be helpful to have a thread where we discuss money making, resource scrounging, (un)employment, career changes, things of that nature. Vent about your job, or lack thereof. Even if you are a privileged golden computer-toucher. Things ain't getting better any time soon, or likely ever. We already know that. Economy's hosed, and as usual, austerity is the only item on the menu. So let's talk about how to survive the remaining few months/years, until the human race finally manages to extinguish itself in a brilliant blaze of malicious stupidity. My intention is for this to be a somewhat helpful and encouraging thread. Broader than the unionizing thread, but more specific and practical than doomsday econ. General work ethics discussion is cool, but I will kindly request that we try not to personally attack posters in this thread for their particular job, education, or financial situation. PART ONE: MAKE MONEY There are many ways to make money. Most of them loving suck. The suggestions below are perhaps preferable to starving or freezing to death, depending on your own personal code of ethics. That is your decision to make. I'm throwing in everything I can think of, but obviously this isn't exhaustive. I'm in the US, so some of these suggestions/terms might be US-only. Contributions from other countries are of course welcome too. I ASSURE YOU THAT NONE OF THE LINKS IN THIS OP ARE REFERRAL LINKS. I'M NOT THAT SHAMELESS Before we get into all the rest of it, you might want to check out the Steady app. I'm mixed about it, I find it kind of annoying and intrusive, but also a decent general resource. It bridges a lot of the categories below, so I wasn't sure where to stick it. Fairly useful for looking up jobs, assistance programs, all kinds of stuff. They claim to be "building a better financial future for the global workforce." Naturally I'm skeptical. But you may find some use in it. Those of you who are considering jobs that involve being indoors and/or interacting with other people might want to check this informative post in the covid thread regarding respirators Ridesharing Never done it and I'm not endorsing it during a pandemic, so I'm not going to bother compiling links here. But it's a potential option I guess, if you have a vehicle. If someone else wants to write up info about it, I'll edit it in. Food/Grocery/Alcohol Delivery & Gig Jobs Only really an option if you have a vehicle (and even then it's never really a great option) It varies a lot by region, see what's available in your area. I haven't personally done any delivery gigs so I can't give much insight on these, sorry.

Haven't used MTurk in like 5 years, I logged in recently and at some point it was suspended for inactivity. Emailed them to ask for reactivation, but they won't respond. From what I saw, it looks like 2-3 years ago they purged inactive accounts.

Three cool grifter things that work: Find a market research company in your area. This usually only works if you live in a relatively large city I think, but I dunno. Give them your email address. I get at least a few emails per month from the company here looking for people that fit various criteria to test new cleaning products or lotions or whatever. Usually it's video conferencing or in-home product use only now, but you still get like $150 or whatever. Start filling out as many class action lawsuit claims as you can. Don't fill them out if you don't qualify, because that's fraud. But a whole lot of them don't require any proof or purchase...... There are a couple websites and email lists you can sign up for that just dump the latest suits to your inbox every week so they're easy to track. This is not something that will get you money right away, though. Some of these take literal years to get to you, but most take 8 months or so. Still, when you get a random check in the mail it's a fun day. I know someone who's gotten $8k just from class actions over a decade or so. Make those loving companies give you some of your money back, hell yeah. Turn into one of those coupon people. You don't have to go crazy and end up with a full basement of poo poo and binders of coupons or anything, but you can get a lot of stuff like toiletries and junk food for free and donate or help friends with whatever you don't need. I recommend doing it at CVS to take advantage of their extra care bucks for free poo poo, or just do the mail-in-rebates at Menard's to get a bunch of free poo poo for less work than that. Luckily this is something that a lot of people already do and there are entire ~systems~ people have created for this poo poo, so just find one on slickdeals.net's forums and grift away.

You let out a hollow muffled laugh through your respirator, then return to your dirt floor shed to squat among the sacks of moldering beans while you recover from your brush with capitalism Alternate universe serious answer: politely wait for a lull in the customers (or if there isn't one, yeah stand awkwardly in line, or better yet, come back at a less busy time). Ask if there is an application to fill out, or if they would like a resume. Maybe introduce yourself to the manager if they're not busy. Don't waste their time with a lot of talk, just give them a face to put to the app. Gives you a chance to make a brief but nice impression, if you don't think you'll bungle it

The platforms themselves are usually transparent but also don't really seem to care about protecting anyone. On MTurk this means that the money earned for a task will be the money you get, but some people post tasks that just pay insanely low amounts, and some people will post tasks and lie about their duration. For Mturk this is resolved by user implemented rating systems where mturkers rate requesters based on how well they pay etc. So if you go in blindly, you will probably not do great, but if you join some MTurk communities, get the right scripts etc. it shouldn't be too risky. I've been doing it since like 2017? Maybe earlier? So I'm not sure what it's like to sign up for now. Payout time for each individual job varies, but it's usually pretty quick. Could be instant, could take a few days, rarely takes a few weeks. Once you get paid for the job, it lands in your MTurk account. You can get paid out from there a few different ways, at intervals. I have it go to my Paypal every 3 days, which is the minimum interval. I think you can do Amazon credit or bank deposit too. You'll want to run an extension to help. I use MTurk Suite to help me search/scan for good tasks (called HITs, which I think means human intelligence task) and see red flags on bad HITs. I cherry pick based on the pay ($.10/min is my usual minimum) and the ratings of that HIT/requester, if there are any yet You start with a lovely selection of jobs and more open up as you gain qualifications. Some qualifications are automatic, like your number of approved HITs. Some have to be applied for. Some require you to pass a test or screener. The coveted one is the Master's Qualification, which is granted by Amazon itself, apparently at whim. No one knows what the exact criteria are, but it appears that you need something like 2,000+ HITs, 99%+ approval rating, and completing a broad range of different types of HITs including the lovely penny tasks. Master's apparently unlocks the big money tasks. There's a lot of luck involved even when you get in the upper tiers. Some days are better than others. Some of the tasks are pretty strange. One of my early ones was helping to burying bad press about Elon in Google search results. I got paid $15 for taking pictures of my feet once, that was cool. Rev: Also legit. Pays out through Paypal only. It's just transcription of audio/video files, and closed captioning of video files, which also involves syncing the transcription and formatting it differently. You don't need any special equipment or software. They have a pretty good setup for both built into their site, with very thorough keyboard shortcuts. It's also kind of a tiered system based on minutes complete and your grading (all of your work gets graded.) I found it easy to get the hang of, and enjoyable to do in short bursts Edit: I should add that they're both fairly low paying given the time involvement. On a good day I might grab $50-60 on MTurk. I'm not Master's but I do have a ton of qualifications. I like Rev a bit more, and it's less luck-based and weirdly random than MTurk, but find it more difficult to do for longer periods, so I usually max out at about $20-30 on there before I give up and go do something else. Ymmv. The best thing was MTurking during idle time at my old office job. uncertainty posted:Based on my limited experience yes and no. The platforms themselves are usually transparent but also don't really seem to care about protecting anyone. This is a good point I should have mentioned. Sometimes you just lose out and there's nothing you can really do about it. For example, the survey bugs out partway through, and then you can't access it again or turn in the HIT. A lot of the research study ones are crudely made, sometimes the poo poo just breaks. You can try to contact the requester but they may or may not care or be able to do anything about it. In my experience it's kind of rare for a requester to stiff you for honest work. You can block out lovely requesters with bad ratings or tasks you hate You can "unaccept" HITs too, so you can at least back out without damaging your ratings if poo poo goes south, like the survey breaking example.
