Theres just all these amazing flourishes like in the Taylor Swift bit where he briefly over explains the studio and the engineer and producers and those small moments just suck the steam or momentum out of anything hes setting up. Then he just lays the worst non-punch line on top of that structurally awful set up and its so brilliant.

It elevated everything beyond just "lol dumb jokes" into something like comedic antimatter.

I know the most obvious comparison is Andy Kauffman but Heidecker seems much more focused on structurally terrible comedy. He understands exactly how stand up comedy is "supposed" to be and feel but does everything to simultaneously mimic yet completely subvert it.

Lmao just remembering that from reading your post. I’m really glad he put this out. Just a few months ago I went through all of his standup clips from years back on YouTube. The soda joke fuckin cracked me up all like 10 times. Those are especially funny because like nobody in the audience was laughing and you can just feel the tension. “Your trying to tell me Diet Coke is the same as Coke, but like, it doesn’t taste the same”

Still think season 7 overall, and this episode specifically, was the absolute height of On Cinema.

I remember watching it week by week and whenever Tim would give an update on TCJR in the final few episodes I kept thinking, "They can't seriously be going where I think they're going...." And then they did, and it was even better than I hoped.

I actually really liked the fact that they got DMCA'd for playing their own special.

But the real takeaway from it was that the audience for the Chrimbus specials were all supplied by a company that provides audiences to talk shows from the populations of halfway houses for convicts on parole. What a completely dark thing that I had no idea existed.

All the Oscar specials are pretty great.

Except the Our Cinema one without Tim. I don’t know if they couldn’t get money that year or it was part of the joke but, man, kinda dull.

I just rewatched the painfully overlong and grotesquely edited Joker tribute that Gregg put together. it's so brutal to experience.

what does everyone recommend as a "starter" episode for anyone who might like the show? it's so daunting to recommend to anyone. Eleven seasons (and counting) of OC, the Decker shows, Mr. America, the Trial of Tim Heidecker...

I think my go-to is the Suicide Squad review. Tim's a poo poo-show and was probably the era where I really started getting into the OC
