Smile. Win. Yay!

I've for sure seen the Ishikawa II, Ibushi and (spoilered) matches, but those others sound good. Haven't seen a ton of younger Takagi, and the Takanashi story reminds me a bit of Kobashi/Tamon Honda, so if it's anywhere near as good as that it'll be great

Takagi was born old, he's about the same as he always has been, it's just one of his odd serious matches.

The Takanashi match is real fuckin good, it was my favorite match of 2010 and one of my favorites of the whole decade. Just an outstanding underdog story of a guy who has absolutely no business being in a match for the title working his rear end off

Sekimoto's match with Teioh in March 2003 is a lot of fun too, even if the crowd is so dead you'd swear it was preceded by a Bray Wyatt segment.

This NOAH show from Saturday is about as inconsequential a show as they could run but Daiki Inaba vs Manabu Soya is a fun little battle of ex Wrestle1 guys, and Kai Fujimura is also here.

The main event is good classic Heavyweight vs Junior fair between Kiyomiya and Harada. Nothing revolutionary but a nice snappy and short show

Updating this with the card for this Korakuen show which is live on the Network & will have English commentary added later I think.

Kzy, Ben-K, Yosuke♡Santa Maria & Strong Machine J vs Ultimo Dragon, Kagetora, Gamma & Taketo Kamei
YAMATO & Keisuke Okuda vs Masaaki Mochizuki & Don Fujii vs BxB Hulk & Kazma Sakamoto
Team Toryumon (Genki Horiguchi, Yasushi Kanda & Kenichiro Arai) vs Team Boku (Ryo Saito, Boku R Shimizu & Punch Tominaga)
Shun Skywalker vs Susumu Yokosuka
Dragongate Generation (Kota Minoura, Jason Lee & Dragon Dia) vs RED (KAI, Takashi Yoshida & Dia Inferno)
Team Toryumon (Naruki Doi, Masato Yoshino, Dragon Kid & Shuji Kondo) vs RED (Eita, Kaito Ishida, SB KENTo & HYO)

Nothing absolutely must watch but some very fun multiman tags (as always with DG) & that Shun vs Susumu match will be fascinating to see just how Shun beats him. Will it be fairly competitive or will it be another him brushing a guy away in under 10 minutes? Because he's had a singles match on every show DG have run since he returned & apart from the title win at Kobe World Hall he's beaten Maria in 5:34, Kagetora in 3:25, Punch in 4:55, Jimmy in 4:47, Kikuta in 4:31, none of which is massively shocking because they are all guys firmly in the bottom quarter of the card the majority of time. But then in Sendai on Saturday he beat Dragon Kid in 7:52, & that's a pretty quick win over a quick who is still fairly protected on the whole, and Yokosuka is even more protected. So if it's another sub-10 minute win here (entirely plausible considering the card placement) then yeah, can totally see this being a pretty impressive Dream Gate run.

Gotta say that the NOAH show this morning was fun, especially the top 2 matches. It's available on Abema for free for the next 6 days & is a really good teaser to this Sunday's show featuring a GHC HW title match with Shiozaki vs Sugiura, National title match with Kenoh vs Sakuraba & Junior Tag title match between STINGER & Suzuki & Salvahe de Oriente. This has also a free Abema broadcast.

Got to give it to CyberAgent, the presentation aspects of NOAH have been so good. The quality of the promo videos they do like before Shiozaki Nakajima is so good.

Sugiura still is one of the best wrestlers in the world so it's not like the main events would suffer.

If they wanted to get the belt off Go this year he should've lost to Nakajima. Sugi rules but him winning makes no sense. A real two steps back.

There's this nightmarish thought at the back of my head that he loses on 4/1 to loving Keiji Mutoh for some reason. I hope not but man.

Actually hadn't thought about who should win it from Go because I was so convinced Nak would win and there's no real names that jump out to you. Kiyomiya would need a bit of time to bounce back from losing to Kenoh, Kenoh has the National belt, Nakajima obviously just lost to Go, Sugiura is real old, not a draw & also the Tag champ, Marufuji is similar to Sugi in that he's old & definitely a step back to the older generation. Kitamiya is the 3rd dude in Kongo & shouldn't be on that level. An outsider? Who?

Man, this is actually a bit of a bummer, the title reign has been so great, it needs to not have the momentum squandered.

Smile. Win. Yay!

A guy I could see as a possibility, although with the age problem of Sugi and Marufuji, is Akiyama. If it turns out he's not going back to All Japan next year, he's been over in DDT recently and has history in Noah. A short reign could work to rehab Katsu or give Kiyomiya a bit of time.

Although now that I write it down it occurs to me that it's putting the past over the present in Noah, the very thing that hosed Akiyama over 15 years ago with Kobashi. So maybe Go will defend forever and just get more and more broken down until he ends up like Misawa, or Tanahashi in the best case.

I understand why they did what they did, because he's the first non-NJPW guy with a chance of winning the Tokyo Sports MVP since Sugiura in 2010 & I guess they want to get him to a year long reign (if he beats Sugiura on Sunday then he'll leapfrog KENTA to have the 6th longest GHC HW title run.

Looking at the schedule, there's 4 shows left before New Sunrise. Nak is in a tag match on Sunday with Kitamiya & Soya against FULL THROTTLE so uhhh, that doesn't help. The Gift card isn't announced, at Kongo Produce show there's Nak & Kitamiya (Aggression reformed is fun) against Inamura & Okada so that also doesn't help. But at the Sugiuragun Produce show on the 29th the main event is Sugiuragun vs Kongo 7vs 7. So in theory if you had Nakajima pin Sugiura that could be enough to warrant a GHC title match for the following week's show run opposite Wrestle Kingdom. Normally I'd assume you'd not get something that significant at a Produce show but it's being put on Abema PPV so maybe? But of course that relies upon Sugiura winning on Sunday & would they want to do the first zero successful defences reign since Marufuji's December 2015-January 2016 reign? There's only been 4 of those in the 19 years of the GHC HW title.

The only thing that makes sense if Shiozaki retains is someone like either Yuji Hino or I dunno, Chris Hero coming along after that match & challenging. And is Hero a big enough name as a singles guy in Japan? Probably not, he finished 2nd in his block in a couple of Global Leagues & 2 GHC HW Tag title shots partnering with Colt Cabana in 2015. To be honest I'd be fine with Akiyama getting a title shot but I don't think he should win. If it's someone from DDT then Takeshita? I dunno. It's a puzzle.

I think Nakajima should have won, but the story of how he threw away his best friend to chase glory and ended up with nothing to show for it is a good one.

Hideki Suzuki is another person who could end up taking the belt. He and Go went to a time limit draw last year and he was tweeting about how he wanted a match with him

forkboy84

My worry about Suzuki is he's not exactly renowned for putting people over. He's had 3 singles matches in NOAH, 2 30 minute draws & then a win over Inamura. I'm not saying he'd do a Brock Lesnar & run away with the belt, he's held & dropped titles before, but he does have a bit of a rep where he can kinda eat opponents up because "I'm a shooter".

But he's certainly a guy who could reasonably beat Go, yeah. It's probably going to be him or Sugiura.

GEORGE W BUSHI
Jul 1, 2012

Suzuki's reputation for not putting people over is overstated. He's a guy who let the entire Ice Ribbon roster come out and humiliate him in a comedy match with Giulia. He protects his reputation for sure, but if Nosawa can persuade Kazuyuki Fujita to take his first pinfall loss since the G1 Final in 2005, I think he can get Hideki to put someone over.

it's probably been said by now, but AJPW was imo the best promotion in Japan until around this year when Shuji Ishikawa got the book

now it's mediocre af and someone better should get the book

anyway NOAH's been having a wonderful year in spite of the plague. If you haven't by now, you should seriously check out Go Shiozaki's title defence against Bonafide GOAT Contender Kazuyuki Fujita from earlier this year, because it's one of the most incredible matches from the plague era

Match of the Day

Masakatsu Funaki vs Tatsuo Nakano, UWFi July 24, 1989
http://theditch.us/FunakivsNakano7-24-89.avi

Background: UWFi was a shoot-style promotion that helped lead to various MMA promotions like PRIDE in the 1990s. Most of the UWFi crew were trained in the New Japan dojo, so they had a firm grasp of both legit grappling and working a realistic match. Masa Funaki's elite athletic ability and phenomenal looks made him a guaranteed star, which included an extended comeback run in pro wrestling after his MMA career ended. Nakano... how do I phrase this... is neither an elite athlete nor a good-looking human. It's a stark contrast.

Why you should watch it: It's really intense and heated, and possibly the best match under 10 minutes long in Japanese history. Some really badass moves are mixed in with the stiffness and hate.

Last night's Korakuen was one of the most fun Dragon Gate shows I've seen all year, even if none of the matches were blow away must-watches. Several big developments out of it though.

  • Shun Skywalker is forming a new unit with Dragon Dia, Jason Lee, Kota Minoura, and a mysterious fifth member who will be revealed along with the unit name at the Dec. 15th Korakuen.
  • Mochizuki and Fuji will challenge Hulk and KAI for the Twin Gate at Final Gate
  • Madoka Kikuta tore off Dragon Kid's mask after the main event and attacked Taketo Kamei to join R.E.D.
  • A No DQ Unit Disbands match between R.E.D. and Toryumon has been set for Final Gate. Teams are Eita, Kikuta, SB KENTo, Ishida & H・Y・O vs. Doi, Yoshino, Susumu, Dragon Kid & Horiguchi
  • The Doi Darts Teams for the Dec. 15th Korakuen were decided: K-ness, Dia Inferno, Kota Minoura, Ryo Saito, and BxB Hulk vs. Jason Lee, Masaaki Mochizuki, Strong Machine J, Kenichiro Arai, and Kazma Sakamoto

Not enough people watch it because their streaming service is expensive and weird, and I know I'm biased as it's my favorite style of wrestling, but Dragon Gate has been firing on all cylinders since pretty much the empty studio King of Gate in May, and everything since Dangerous Gate on has been pretty much :discourse:. Just about every act from the top to the bottom of the card has been booked wonderfully or at least extremely fun, and I've yet to not enjoy a single show this year.

The back half of the show was a lot of fun. Kzy being real mad at Shun for stealing members, Ultimo Boku Shimizu, 40 year old DG wrestlers pretending to be kids acting super excited to be picked to take part in Doi Darts is a gag that hasn't worn thin, and the rad turn was fantastic.

SBKento already sounds so confident on the mic (as much as you can tell when you know zero Japanese) despite having debuted 12 months ago.

DG in 2020 has been weird. I grew tired of the generation war stuff pretty soon after the Toryumon Reunion show, it just lacked something. Might even say it felt a bit self-indulgent. And that has really been the main focus as you'd expect. Plus I kind of hate what they've done with Big R by making him a loving geek. But at the same time the in ring product is consistently good. The development of this latest crop of rookies has been fantastic and other young guys like Ishida have come on.

So I'm definitely lower on DG than I am on NOAH but I think they are my clear #2 promotion this year. The highs in DDT and NJPW might have been higher but DG just doesn't have the low (except when they decided to bring TARU back and TBH that was quite funny watching him do nothing all match long until he got the finish)

For me, RED has been the real key to this year, a they’ve been heatedly feuding with everyone so that while Torymon is doing old man reunion shenanigans that are fun but indulgent and inconsequential you have DG Gen and RED killing each other or RED headhunting Yoshino. There’s just been an energy to everything this year even if the Gen War doesn’t feel as heated as say Blood Warriors and Junction III.

Ha, when I look at my Twitter timeline, I feel like I'm the only person not watching Dragon Gate right now

Is Ultimo Dragon still doing Dragon Gate that they're possibly breaking up the Toryumon stable already and reintroducing a more stables besides Toryumon vs DragonGate vs RED?

Ultimo is still around but he's not taking up too much time and has been fine recently just doing nosalgia stuff with the Toryumon guys. The post-Gen War landscape has been getting seeded for a little bit now, with Team Boku (Doi, Saito, Shimizu, and Punch) being an unofficial stable as it is, and now with Shun's stable breaking people off from the DG Gen team, we're basically moving towards a new stable landscape for 2021.

I'm not making a fucking QCS thread for this but seriously can we take a harder stance on Kiwifarms freaks like this guy, Jesus Christ seriously, you used to be better at knocking these creeps down. I guess ADTRW mods aren't responsible like GBS mods are.

Is it more or less insane than the tag matches that (either IWA Japan or BJW) had back in the 90s that featured full frontal, uncensored nudity

Really loved this show too, just a hype moment after the other! DG has been my promotion of the year with quite the margin and Final Gate is shaping up to be another great show.

As I was starting putting together the weekly schedule I noticed I overlooked that all 3 nights DG are doing in Hokkaido are on the Network. With the first one being broadcast in 5 & a half hours from now

6pm JST/8pm AEDT/9am GMT/4am EST/1am PST

Dragon Gate Fantastic Gate 2020 - BxB Hulk Homecoming
ii-one Stadium, Sapporo
Toryumon (Ultimo Dragon & Dragon Kid) vs Dragongate Generation (Kzy & Yosuke♡Santa Maria)
Ben-K vs Taketo Kamei
Team Boku (Ryo Saito & Bokutimo Dragon) vs Dragongate Generation (YAMATO & U-T)
Don Fujii & Punch Tominaga vs Keisuke Okuda & Strong Machine J
Shun Skywalker, Kota Minoura, Jason Lee & Dragon Dia vs RED (BxB Hulk, Kaito Ishida, SB Kento & Dia Inferno)
Toryumon (Naruki Doi, Masato Yoshino & Susumu Yokosuka) vs RED (Eita, HYO & Madoka Kikuta)
Live on DG Network

It's actually a good month to sub to the Network as there's 9 shows being broadcast including the Korakuen from the 2nd which will still be up on demand for a few more days. 2 shows at Sanbo Hall, another Korakuen, 1 show from the beautiful Kobe KBS Hall, the 3 Sapporo shows today, tomorrow & Sunday & Final Gate from Fukuoka with Shun Skywalker vs Ben-K Dream Gate match, BxB Hulk & KAI vs Don Fujii & Masaaki Mochizuki for the Twin Gate, Kaito Okuda vs Kagetora for the Brave Gate & the big RED vs Toryumon 10 man elimination tag match with the losing faction having to disband.

Japanese commentary gets Jurina & Kenta Kobashi, Fite PPV gets Mohammad Yone. I think I'll watch the feed where I can't understand anyone.
