I just end up pulling my hair out trying to "translate" the names of people on smaller shows. At least with groups that I've a passing familiarity with I can sort of fudge my way through it Dave Meltzer in the 80s Jushin Riger style, but god it should be mandatory to do like Stardom do & put up the names in both Kanji & Latin alphabets in pictures or something similar. Purely for my benefit.

finally gave in to the pressure for more good Japanese wrestling and subscribed to Wrestle Universe. Other than just "start watching", where's good to start?

Currently watching the D King Grand Prix show that dropped today but I'm aware this is most of the way through a tournament featuring mostly guys I don't know plus Chris Brookes (on whatever night he's on). Is there a better approach, or should I just immerse?

Depends on how far back you want to go, but DDT just recently had Ultimate Party which is now their big show of the year so you could watch that, then the two DDT TV Show episodes following it (#11 and #12), and then start on the D-oh Grand Prix shows to be more or less caught up.

To get a little more set-up for Ultimate Party, and an introduction to the whole roster, you could start with the King of DDT tournament which ran over four shows in August.

In general, the DDT TV Show episodes highlight the storylines leading up to the main shows this year so if you don't want to watch everything those are a good option to follow along with.

I'm probably not the best person for this question, because I still sometimes get confused with DDT's lower card guys but I'm online so I'll give it a go. Easiest way for me to get into a new promotion around tournament time is to pick one guy I know in each block (in your case Chris Brookes in A Block and either Tetsuya Endo (the champ) or Jun Akiyama (legend in the twilight of his career) in B Block) and just watch every one of their matches as it goes. If there's a particular opponent you really enjoyed the match of, repeat the process with them until you get a basic knowledge of the top players.

It's a pretty good time to get into DDT. Endo just defended the belt against his faction mate at Ultimate party last month so everyone is gunning for the #1 contender spot in the tournament. Only downside is that the two members of Eruption are in separate blocks so there's not much chance to see one of the coolest teams in the world.

cheers, that's very helpful. I'll probably go back to Ultimate Party for DDT, then.

I think the technique of "start with a big show" will work for DDT, TJPW, and Noah. So I'll look at The Chronicle and Wrestle Princess too.

Personally when I start watching a promotion I just dive into the latest show & just go from there but let me pick out some of my favourite stuff from 2020 Pro Wrestling NOAH

New Sunrise was a show they ran on the 4th of January & while I would recommend the entire show, I'd say bare minimum the top 3 matches are what should be watched. You've got a Jr title match between HAYATA & incredibly old but still very good Yoshinari Ogawa which I enjoyed the hell out of, National title between Takashi Sugiura & Masa Kitamiya, & the GHC Heavyweight title clash with Kaito Kiyomiya defending against Go Shiozaki in a top 5 of the year match for me. Note that this link is for BiliBili because it's not on Universe for some reason.
Reboot was on the 5th of January but I've just linked to the one match, GHC Heavyweight tag team title clash between 2019's Tag Team of the Year AXIZ (Go Shiozaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima & the M's Alliance team of Masaaki Mochizuki & Naomichi Marufuji. Another BiliBili link.
Next is the Final show of the 2020 Global Junior League. You can skip most of the shot but you'll want to see the tournament semifinals of Dick Togo vs Yoshinari Ogawa & Daisuke Harada vs Hajime Ohara which is in the middle of the card, then skip to the main event which is the tournament finals. Particularly Harada vs Ohara & the final are really good examples of NOAH Junior action.
Higher Ground Night 4 from Korakuen Hall, the main event tag between Kazuyuki Fujita & Takashi Sugiura vs Go Shiozaki & Kaito Kiyomiya is a good match that sets up Fujita's future title challenge but the match to watch is 3rd from the top, Hideki Suzuki vs Katsuhiko Nakajima
The Chronicle Volume 1 is Feb 24th & the must see match here is the National title match between Sugiura & Kiyomiya. Another one from BiliBili
NOAH The Chronicle Volume 2 was one month later & it was the first show of the no-fan era. It was also the show where NOAH started getting a bit of hype behind it thanks to the unique Shiozaki vs Fujita match. But it's a 4 match show, Jr Tag, National, Jr & HW titles on the line & the only one I remember dragging a little was the Junior Tag match so if you can be hosed I recommend the whole show. Jr Tag is HAYATA & YO-HEY (of the group RATEL's) vs Atsushi Kotoge & Kotaro Suzuki of Stinger. Ummm, yeah, NOAH Juniors is a messy division, none of those 4 guys are still in the same group today), National is Sugiura vs Minoru Tanaka in an under-rated match, Jr is Ogawa vs Daisuke Harada. And the main event is incredibly unique, albeit quite polarising. The less you know going in the better.
I've completely skipped Global Tag League, it wasn't bad but nothing stands out in my mind. So this is NOAH The Spirit from 29th April & the matches to catch are the top 2, Ogawa vs Kotaro Suzki & the Tag Title match between Mochizuki & Marufuji vs Tag League winners Rene Dupree & El Hijo del Dr Wagner.
You want the main event of this show, which is just called Sugiura vs Nakajima. It's a National title match, it's great
Main event is Shiozaki vs Akitoshi Saito. Nobody had expectations for this, Saito is 55, he debuted in 1990 & is mostly in a goofy tag team. But it was good
Skipping forward to August 4th & the GHC National Championship match between Katsuhiko Nakajima & Kenoh. This is the first Kenoh match I've included but won't be the last.
The following night & we've got another must see Heavyweight title match, Go Shiozaki vs Naomichi Marufuji
5 days after the Shiozaki vs Marufuji match he's right back in there for another title defence. This time it's Shiozaki vs Kenoh & oh my loving god I was absolutely convinced this was unbeatable Match of the Year, absolutely amazing contest.
Another one where you want the main event primarily: AXIZ (Shiozaki & Nakajima) vs Sugiuragun (Takashi Sugiura & Kaz Hayashi)
30th August. The tag titles had been vacated as Dupree & EHdDrW had to go home & didn't know when they'd come back. So it's AXIZ vs Sugiura & Kazushi Sakuraba. The match slaps but that's not why I've put it here.
In September the N1 started. It ruled. But while trying to make this huge list something that is watchable I'm trying to restrict myself to the absolute standouts. And one is the Night 1 main event, Nakajima vs Kenoh. Two angry prick kickboys kicking each other. gently caress yeah
Show 5 gives us a great Mochizuki vs Shiozaki tournament match. And the previous match is Nakajima vs Sugiura which is also well worth your time
Final night of block matches. Block A, the main event, is down to Go Shiozaki vs Kaito Kiyomiya. Not as good as 4/1 but still great wrestling
The finals of the N1 tournament. I rated it 9/10, it rules. Also worth finding is the Jr Title match between Kotaro Suzuki & Haoh of Kongo.
NOAH The Chronicle Volume 4. Top 3 matches have the N1 runner up challenging Kenoh for the National title, a great Sugiuragun vs M's Alliance (Marufuji & Masakatsu Funaki) for the Tag belts & your Heavyweight match of the year maybe? between Go Shiozaki & the winner of the N1. Brilliant, emotional storytelling

Okay, that'd take a trillion hours to watch so to narrow it down further, watch every title match involving Go, watch the Sugiura vs Nakajima, & both Nakajima vs Kenoh matches, & throw in the AXIZ Sugiuragun tag title match from 30th August & the N1 Final & that will give you a pretty solid grasp of what's what. In the Heavyweight division anyway.

If you've never watched a NOAH Abema preshow, one of the commentators has a magnetic whiteboard & a pointer & magnets with all the NOAH wrestlers faces & the board is divided up into all the stables. Actually, there's two boards, one for the Juniors & one for the Heavyweights. I imagine if you speak Japanese it's a pretty useful intro to what the gently caress is going on, but it's also a delightfully low budget presentation & I love it.

It's probably just the thought that I wanted Kenoh to win more definitively. Like if he reached the ropes and after another minute or two of grappling he managed to choke Saku out I would have been perfectly fine with it.
