To use a crude analogy, Altman's movies are growers/not showers for me. I enjoy them, but I don't really get into them until a 2nd watch. He had such a unique vision with film.

I thought, "I should make Altman the next director I deep dive into." He has 41 feature-length films! Prolific work-horse.

It's a shame that a lot of his films aren't readily available. So much of his stuff wasn't particularly successful commercially.

But if they ever did a complete works, I'd buy it in an instant.

I mean, if Criterion were doing a boxset, I'd hope they'd have the original release editions as an extra or something - it seems like something they'd fight for, especially if there's a moderate backlash in film communities.

They're not going to be there. 1994 Ashes of Time doesn't exist, and the pre-restoration cuts of these films are all going to be memory holed. If you have old blu-rays/dvds, many of them these days out of print, save them and make copies, if you don't get yourself invited to AvistaZ or something like that where they will likely curate the best possible versions of these films as torrents.

Edit: Also wondering if we're going to get a fourth cut of The Grandmaster because why not.

This poo poo frustrates to no end. Streaming services don't even list the cut of movies on them. Its a total crapshoot what you get in any instance and makes me yearn for when you could tell what you in for because they added 4 superlatives to the cover of the dvd case.

What's the chance that the Chungking Express criterion comes back in print...even if we don't get a full Wong box?

The Wong box is confirmed as coming. I doubt that original version of CE ever comes back though. If they do separate releases for everything it will almost certainly be this new version on the disc.

Is the Five Easy Pieces included in Criterion's set "America Lost and Found: The BBS Story" the equivalent of the Five Easy Pieces criterion blu ray, or does the latter have more features/extras or differences?

Looks like the individual blu ray may have these extras:

• Documentary from 2009 about BBS featuring critic David Thomson and historian Douglas Brinkley (27:38)
• Liner notes booklet with an essay by critic Kent Jones

And the 2009 documentary is on the Head blu ray in the set going by DVD Beaver at least:

Still streaming on the channel though, and highly worth checking out!

Criterion definitely has The Trial and It's All True, plus they've been rumored to have Citizen Kane.

I'd love a Welles box, but Criterion's Blu-rays of The Magnificent Ambersons, Othello, Chimes at Midnight, The Immortal Story, and F for Fake are already among their best releases ever. I think more realistically, they'll do standalone releases of Citizen Kane, The Trial, and The Other Side of the Wind plus some sort of set of Welles unfinished work that includes It's All True.

Still going to channel some CPL energy to will a complete Kurosawa box into existence.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Maybe we'll get those scenes with Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung that were filmed in Macau at last.

Edit:

https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/4117-world-of-wong-kar-wai

Here's the page. Only Days of Being Wild is mentioned as having an alternative cut, so this box will just feature the new restorations with the different aspect ratios, color timings on Fallen Angels/Happy Together/In the Mood For Love. So again, if you own the old dvd/blu rays and/or files keep them.

No Ashes of Time, Grandmaster and the american film.

Does have new cut of The Hand which is cool cause we get to see more of Gong Li and Chang Chen looking hot and sexy.

It's Criterion so probably Region A.

As for the screencaps that Criterion provided and the Bluray.com Forums post on the aspect ratio change for Fallen Angels, they don't look that bad.
