Searched the thread for a mention of this band, didn't see any so... I strongly recommend Kindling:

Haven't heard these two in decades. I got the single in a batch of five random remainders in the early 90s and it was the highlight; certainly the only other one I remember now was Hokey Karaoke by Star Turn on 45 Pints, mainly because it was ridiculous.

Probably? They have almost no songs on YouTube. But the guitars have the same vibe if you can find their albums.

My team got swept out of the playoffs, and all I got was this avatar and red text

So I was playing rocket league at like 1AM the Friday night before Halloween and I teamed up with someone named "shoegaze enjoyer" and our teammate started asking him about bands he recommended, thinking nothing of it we won our game and went our ways. Later that night I was on youtube and searched for "shoegaze" just to see, clicked one of the compilations and Holy poo poo, is there a word for finding something you never knew you were looking for? It's all I've been listening to for the past two months and I've barely scratched the service. I've heard of a few of the bands that popped up (M83, MBV, Silversun) but never listened to them in depth. Really like Slowdive and Lush, Ride, Cocteau, also Fazerdaze and Beach House but there's so much stuff :3:

“Shoegaze” came about as a derisive term for bands that were said to care more about their effects pedals than the audience when playing. I think MBV was the first to get that term applied. Ride probably at the same time. This is my recollection as an old :corsair:

yeah. uk music journalists loved to come up with cute labels for things. "the scene that celebrates itself" cuz the first bands were always seen going to each other's shows.

as time passed the label eventually evolved into a description of a certain kind of guitar music. now you go on bandcamp, search "shoegaze," and there's so much stuff to listen to it's mind blowing.

I've heard it was Moose, but I don't have a link to the article in question.

Epiphany? Awakening? Profound Moment? I've had a few of those related to music. They are the small things that can make life worth it. I would advise you to go back and read this entire thread from the start. Listen to absolutely everything and note items which catch your ear. I've purchased a good number of albums for my digital library thanks to posts here. Some are rather obscure and probably won't be mentioned elsewhere.

I've had that a few times, mostly when I was around high school age.

The first one I remember was hearing Depeche Mode's "Violator". I'd been listening to whatever boring radio butt-rock was happening around 1989/1990, and hearing that album made me realize there was amazing music out there that wasn't being played on mainstream stations. Imagine going from Poison and Skid Row to the stuff they were playing on 120 Minutes.

The next was seeing Lush's "For Love" video on my friend's Sega CD demo disc, and going that afternoon to buy the "Spooky" album. And I haven't stopped listening to shoegaze since.

"Serendipity" is the word that immediately comes to mind, but personally I think that relates more to specifically looking for something and ending up finding something you didn't know you were looking for. Of course, in life, we're always looking out for new media, so who's to say?

I've been looking through the thread and found some good stuff, so I'm glad there's always something new!

I'm an avid reader of the Retro Gaming Thread so this caught my eye. It's kind of amazing that music videos (and one from Lush, no less) made it onto a Sega CD demo disc, something I didn't realize was even a thing. But it does make sense. I did some googling, and apparently it was included with the original "model 1" addon (among other items in its free software bundle) if you bought it new:

That's way more shoegazey than Lush, imo. I like it.

Now that I think about it, Lush is kinda the least shoegazey of the bands they're lumped in with. I'm not even sure what that means, exactly. This genre seems to be more about culture than music, since all the bands sound so wildly different.

There was a few years (1985 to 1987ish) where I bought any 4AD record I found in the record store and it was almost always great. That’s how I found Ultra Vivid Scene

Same with Touch and Go in 1986-91 and Sub Pop from 1988 - 92 or so.

Then Matador from 1993 - 1997

Fun when you find a small label that likes the same music you do

Edit: SST in the early 80s too!

I'm quite fond of the last track on that record, "Turing". The chorus is one of those rock things where the drum BPM is slowed down but the guitars/bass are chugging away. Not sure what to call it. That sort of thing is extremely My Jam. If I were to make a Shoegaze compilation album comprised of stuff in my digital library, that song would surely be on it.
