That Harley Quinn illustration is maybe not him at his best nor really playing to his strengths but I think he puts a number of charming personal touches on it. The detailing on her pipe and bat, the superhero bubbles coming out... I dunno. I like it well enough!

That is, weirdly, Final Fantasy XIV, the MMO. They take a lot of his old designs for things that had to be changed for the games and realize them fully in 3D, it's great. A ton of the enemies and bosses are based on the old SNES games, and just recently one of the big raid bosses was closely modeled on the concept art for Final Fantasy 1.

That's a good point, the last bosses of the Stormblood raid series as well.

Wait, so the reason for Tidus' many inexplicable fashion choices is that Amano designed him in tattered, ruined clothing and then the 3-d artists decided "what if his clothes were just designed like that"?

no that piece of art is Amano's later interpretation of his clothes, not the original concept design

Tidus' is dressed like that because his original concept design was as an underwater welder

Yeah, FFX's designs were by Tetsuya Nomura; Amano only did the illustrations.

Nomura did, however, Amano-ify his art style a little bit for Dissidia.

Huh. Well I at least enjoy that his interpretation seems to be going with the fiction that his clothes look like that because he got REALLY hosed up.

I legit think it's the second best written Final Fantasy and is such a loving but not pandering homage to a lot of stuff, even if it takes a little while to get going. I think that even FF fans who don't like MMOs should give it a shot, it really isn't the same kind of thing as FFXI (which full disclosure I did also like very very much when it was new).

I’ve been playing FF3 (western numbering) here and there for the last while and it’s such a delight- it’s shocking how well the Amano designs translate to those low rez pixel portraits. I bought The Sky, the 3 book slipcase collection of Amano’s FF work and it’s wonderful.

It's free to play the entire base game which is a full campaign, they've just got lots of expansions that they're trying to lure you into buying and playing as well.

I tried it and got to the point where I could wander out of the starting areas. It's fine. I fell off because it wasn't to my taste rather than there being something wrong with it.

Totally get that. I cut myself off from Genshin Impact because I spotted the Skinner box trap it was weaving. I think FFXIV isn't nearly that bad about things, though if you get sucked into the grind easily I can understand not wanting to go near it.

I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people that do.

I've only barely touched the grindy side content of FF14 and have stuck to the story mode, even avoiding sidequests once their xp payout started dropping off halfway through the first expansion, and I still have close to 800 hours in the dang thing. So yeah.

Although I will disagree about it not pandering to fans. Some of the raid content is absolutely gratuitous.

The best take I've heard is that, after dying and learning the magical source of gamma energy (even if she's like the other gamma mutates and can't fully remember it afterwards) Jennifer isn't able to see herself as anything less than a monster anymore.

I got an issue a while back that kind of fits both parts of this thread.

Detective Comics #463 from 1976 - Most of the art, by Ernie Chan and Frank McLaughlin, is fine (the faces and some other aspects are actually quite nice) but Batman has a bunch of really awkward looking poses and off proportions, especially in the action scenes.

The back-up story with art by Mike Grell and Terry Austin also has weird proportions and poses but for some reason it all just feels stylized and classic and fun and I love it. Though Calculator does have his foot on the wrong leg in one panel, I think.

can't agree with this at all, I think all that is really fun to look at and especially the batman pages, the poses are interesting and dynamic
e: I mean yes, they're weird and some of them don't follow the 'principles of good animation' type stuff but I still think they're fun to look at in spite of (or maybe a little bit because of) breaking those rules

"I think he's a bad enough person to stay ghost through his sheer love of child-killing."

I think comparing the Batman story to the Atom story, the way the panels are sized and laid out and (occasionally) joined together using sound effects works a lot better in the Atom story.

If you look at the first Batman page, panels 3, 4, and 5 trip themselves up. The eye follows Batman jumping over the ropes and everything points toward Slinky Hamilton (that name, christ) in the bottom right of the panel. It makes your eye want to go to panel #5, which is right beside the point all the details in panel #3 are pointing at. Panels #4 and #5 are also a bit crowded with the thought bubble and the narration boxes, and it's not the most effective way to do that kind of sequence - trying to show the gunman and Batman at the same time in panel #5 is kinda unnecessary because his expression in #4 communicates everything you need to know face-wise. A small cut-in of the finger pulling the trigger and a closer panel on batman getting shot would probably have worked better.

Also I don't know when it became common practice, but none of the comic pages vary the gutter size/width at all, which gives the odd feeling in the second batman page that it takes him just as long to move from panel 1 to 2 (from one spot in a room to another spot) as it does to move from panel 2 to 3 (from a room inside a building to the roof of the same building).

The Atom comic has fewer of these kinds of flaws imo, and Grell and Austin use a lot of very long, thin panels in ways that show movement really effectively.

I certainly won't argue they're fun to look at, but the ape punch on page 1 and the gazelle leap on the 2nd page especially just really took me out of it. Like I said, most of it is fine. The panels of the goon's punch and Slinky running for his car look great.

Didn't think about the eyeline stuff Red Bones mentioned, very interesting.

I don't know if I made it clear, I really love the Calculator story. I have to keep my eyes peeled for the 4 or 5 issues that followed that one so I can get the rest of it.
