Learning to responsibly use/maintain a firearm is an important life skill. Same with basic maintenance of a car, how to properly use a knife, how to build a fire, and how to cook. If you don't know how to do, at the very least, three of those things you probably should.

I can't track an animal but I can track which is the correct download button. I can't cook but I can hide from the boss for half a shift while still getting my work done. I don't know how to file taxes but the Plex server on my smartTV has every single movie and song correctly meta tagged. It's all about choosing which skills are important.

The only acceptable way to teach a kid to shoot is to buy an air pistol or rifle and keeping it secured when not in use. The worst thing that can happen is someone looses a tooth or an eye and that's drat better than the alternative.
