sympathy rats, its never fun telling rents that they cannot see their kids

i had to have the conversation back in april when they wanted to come down and visit but lockdown looked likely because i didnt want them to get stuck here. mam cried over the phone which was awful

around the time we moved, they wanted to come help but bojob declared that they would need tier 3 armour to leave tyneside, so thwarted again

three or four days ago they were telling us how they were going to fly over to belfast for xmas as usual, but now they are devestated to be spending xmas at home, especially since i sent all their presents to my brothers in norn iron

sent them a nice plant boquet and they whatsapped to say it was lovely but pretty sure mam is devastated

less stressed certainly

the source of the stomping is a 15 year old who is not taking the parents divorce well

the missus has promised that if i can make enough to pay for half the cost of noiseproofing the living room party wall, we can do it and see how much stompproofing the stairs / ceiling / remaining party wall would be

i am anticipating about a grand and a half for just the living room wall and underside of the stairs but knowing that it is a thing we can do has lifted a lot of the stress

Although seeming fine with having not seen me in months and happy with leaving Christmas, my mum rang me quite upset that despite being high risk she can't get the vaccine due to allergies, so she's worried we can't meet for ages still and now she wants me to go visit on Christmas day

I said no.

Then she proposed driving to Bristol this week, and me driving down, about halfway between us.

I said no.

Now I'm just stressed and arsey and my day is ruined.
I did this today. We met halfway to exchange presents (loading them into boots) and walk in the countryside. My mum only cried when it was time to go so a strong improvement.

The roads were fairly dead this morning. Every supermarket had a queue outside. The motorways had signs letting you know that all routes to France were closed.

I'm feeling a bit better about not visiting mum after reading the posts from people in a similar situation.
Also been speaking to a mate, his mum is proper hosed & he cant see her either.

It's gonna suck but time for that british 'stiff upper lip' bullshit I think.

That's a nice way to spend some time together, though I hope it wasn't as wet where you are as here though for that walk

It's a minimum 3-hour drive to Bristol for my mum, so that's 6 hours, she has COPD and is high risk and the idea of her going into services or something is terrifying.

Plus I think she just wants to see Looke

Looks pretty tricky to noiseproof tbh - you'll get lots of direct noise transmission through all that supporting wood on the stairs and through other joists/floorboards. Might be cheaper to get something to mask the noise - indoor fountains or some poo poo? And anything you can get to baffle the sound to prevent it spreading to the rest of the house (you can buy moderately tasteful sound absorbing/baffling panels). I did some work building soundproof booths for involuntary basement guests audio recording and once you have anything nailed to anything else loud stomps and traffic vibration just find a drat way through.

There are decoupling fixings with multiple layers of industrial rubber and the like for this purpose, but the short of it is that there’s a fair bit of experimentation needed. Plus pulling things like carpets up and ripping wooden panels apart to try.

Bobby have you had anyone do anything measurement or analysis wise? You can do some basics with a free RTA app on an iOS device, where the mics are at least consistent. Relative data would be fine, even mostly anecdotal like “the app has a big mountain at 75Hz when the little brat gets upset that daddy and mummy aren’t friends any more” or “the wife’s weekly screams of fear are loudest when you’re near the stairs” would be a big step in the right direction.

i think id be ok with stair stomping and door slamming noise, what bothers me more is the idea of us not being able to relax because the volume we can hear them talking, im pretty sure any kind of outside voice and they can hear what we are saying

initially id like the living room wall done and then if it works maybe get them to quote for the stairs, hallway etc

it doesnt have to be 100%, just as long as we cant hear what the other is saying
