Tbh Gears is mainly a multiplayer game, whereby you're buying it to either play versus or the horde mode. The singleplayer has always just been a nice bonus to round out the package with the full offering of singleplayer/co-op/multiplayer. I think the primary reason for your complaints isn't so much story-based as it is bringing some new enemies and variety to the game. They've been iterating the mainline games from the Epic days up to the Coalition days with gradually introducing new mechanics that don't screw with the core formula such as new moves, weapons, enemies etc. and as the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it because...

Quantum of Phallus posted:

The series basically never evolved or innovated

...it did with Gears Judgment, which everyone hated. When the Coalition announced Gears 4 the actual fans of the series wanted a return to what they liked, so that's what they made and kept the new stuff minimal so they could prove they could make a solid Gears game - and they succeeded. Now with Gears 5 they've gone further with opening up singleplayer, adding more new stuff such as the escape mode, map builder, free-for-all and dynamic maps which actually work and more new enemies and weapons. They're doing what the playerbase wants rather than trying to win over fans who don't like the series anyways, which is the right and smart thing to do.

Also, they're innovated again and actually been successful this time with another studio making Gears Tactics which is a really good game.

That's not a very good lineup. Is that King of Fighters game the last 2D one they released with the really nice sprite work? Kinda tempted to grab Dead Rising (doesn't have the 360 logo - did it get remastered?) but I have a feeling it's one of those games that's more fondly remembered than it is to play. I think it had a time limit that while interesting and clever as a mechanic to encourage replayability ended up just being frustrating and a pain in the rear end?

I wish they just made this standalone so you didn't need to own the third game to play it:

Yeah, it's a great game. Watching some video reviews will give you a good overview. I think it's part of the current sale as well? Don't have a clue about Mechanicus and avoided console XCOM2 since I heard it's busted on every platform and they only really cared about the PC version so it's part of my Steam backlog for now.

I mean I am the weirdo who likes the story modes more than multiplayer, for which you can thank rural internet connection speeds, and Gears does have a decent but dumb story that was enough for me to get invested. Its no worse than a fair chunk of bargain scifi stories which puts it above a lot of game writing. The focus might be on multiplayer but I would like it if the effort put into the singleplayer narrative was done better because it's obvious that they do care about it. Gears 4 and 5 have a lot of potential to explore the story in new ways that its disappointing to me as a lore nerd that it is all in service of a rather predictable plotline to fight gooey locust. The glimpses of the world beyond the main story tease me with what could be done if the games really dug into the world because its a very cool setting.

It's not what most people are there for but its something I do care about so I sigh when it goes from fun dumb to dumb dumb.

Gears 3 is still the best multiplayer of the series, but Gears 5 is a step in the right direction after Judgment, and Gears 4 butchered multiplayer in favor of making it more like Call of Duty with really fast time to kill. Gears 5 you can actually take some hits before going down. This is nice when every competitive game now is 1 or 2 bullets takes you down instantly.

The time limit stuff is only a pain if you don't embrace what it's trying to do. The game ends after 3 in-game days (6 hours, I think?), but what happens at the end of those 3 days is up to you. If you don't want to follow the main quest (or fail part of it) there's still a lot to do in the world, then do what you want when the end comes (try to be where you're supposed to be, or not) and then roll all your unlock/levelling etc. progress into a new cycle and play again. Or you can also roll all that into a new cycle if you die at any point so you can try again but with much more power.

People get hung up on achieving everything in one go but it's such a short game that you shouldn't feel like you need to.

I really liked dead rising 1 and will kick the tires on this remaster if I get access to it for "free".

I actually think that 1 is better than the sequels specifically because of the limited scope. I'm also a weirdo who thinks that arkham asylum is better than city for similar reasons, though. City was too big and sprawling, asylum was focused and always motivating to immediately press forward.

Gears 3 was hilarious because people would get pissed if you chainsawed them and if you kept it up eventually you ended up with everyone in the game chainsawing everyone which was goofy fun. The sawn off was also utterly ridiculous and rightfully rage inducing. I remember a match on Old Town once where I killed 3 people in a single shot because the cone spread was so wide. I got messages and expected rage but it was so absurd they couldn't help but laugh about it.

Gears 4 multiplayer was and still is incredible - has a lot of great maps that weren't brought over to Gears 5 so I like to bounce between the two. I just really hope that at some point one of the map pack updates for Gears 5 includes Mansion because I miss that map so much and going back to Gears Ultimate just isn't the same. I fire up Gears 3 sometimes as well just for the nostalgia and some old maps from that which I miss as well but I don't think it's the best multiplayer in the series any more. Definitely the best of the 360-era Gears games but the Coalition has improved things nicely, in my opinion.

It's kinda like Halo where there's a fondness for the Bungie titles but the actual mechanics? 343 have improved things while still retaining what made the series great, they just keep failing at singleplayer and never having enough multiplayer content but the movement mechanics, gunplay and new weapons/vehicles etc. are excellent. It seems like they focus development on starting with the core gameplay mechanics and succeed brilliantly, but then building a game around those mechanics is where they stumble.

Hard disagree on the Halo comparison. Microsoft has managed to make Gears better after tripping over themselvse at first, but Halo since Microsoft took over has just been a gigantic shitshow in every single regard. 343 Halo is a trash pit with no redeeming qualities to them.

I really like Halo 4 multiplayer and honestly can't fault it. I know people were frustrated with the abilities Bungie added in Reach but I think 343 did a good job with changing that system for 4 and making it decent. Map variety was really lacking at launch (4 Slayer maps & 4 BTB maps) but after the map packs finished there's a lot of variety and I can't think of any bad map. The only thing they messed up was not having any firefight mode in the game. I think they did a really good job of coming out swinging with their debut Halo game and the singleplayer was on-par with the other Halo games I've played (I don't care about story) and on a technical level it's easily one of the most impressive games of that generation.

I like Destiny as well and it's interesting seeing how both series have been evolving and which directions they take. I really like the multiplayer but the map design in D2 has really nosedived with the best still being ports from D1 and while the supers and abilities etc. are great it's interesting how they've taken some cues from 343 (e.g. adding mantling) but also some unfortunate cues from games like COD (making terrible 3-lane maps) while 343 has more interesting arenas.

They also eventually added firefight to Halo 5 and it's awesome, so hopefully it becomes a staple of the franchise from now on. Still waiting for Bungie to do the same with Destiny but they seem preoccupied with removing absurd amounts of content right now (I thought sunsetting weapons and armor was bad enough and then they take away entire planets/maps/strikes/modes/campaigns) and turning everything into a huge grind. I hope somebody replaces Luke Smith so he can't continue trying to turn the game into World of Warcraft :(

I've said this in the MCC thread but grunts with needlers almost killed Halo 4 singleplayer for me. If you don't have cover those needles will make 90 degree turns to hit you and you can die from super combines in a split second. If you're in the open then good luck.

I love dead rising, it’s one of those games that’s better than the sum of its parts for me. It’s pretty dumb, but I always had a lot of fun with them. Never actually played number 2 but spent thousands of hours in 1 and 3.

Wasn’t aware they did a remaster, sounds like there were some frame rate problems from what I just read - but that will be solved on these new consoles so I think I’ll buy it.

DR 3 was excellent, the combo weapons were bonkers.

Did you buy the Super Turbo etc. expansion for it? The main game looked a bit too dark & gritty for me but that arcade expansion looks like awesome fun and I really like the colorful aesthetic for it, seems similar Sunset Overdrive or some classic colorful Dreamcast game. What's your thoughts on the expansion if you bought it? Is there a decent amount of content there that makes buying DR3 worth it, or is it fairly short? Can't tell from the trailers if it's a collection of minigames or that's a whole brand new open world to play in?

That's a really good lineup of games, best month in awhile for me.

Microsoft really needs to keep the backwards compatibility program going somehow, or they're eventually going to run out of OG Xbox and 360 titles to give away with Gold.

The first title I played on my Series X was OG Xbox KOTOR and it was transcendent how good it looked in 4K HDR. I know it will never happen, but I really wish they'd just unlock the emulator, perhaps in dev mode, and let you try any disk with it. Licensing issues will likely keep games like Jet Set Radio Future stuck in the past forever, but there may not be any technical hurdles to playing them on the system as-is today. They could even crowd source compatibility testing that way.

It's still leagues better than Sony's boneheaded insistence that all games on their platform have Trophy support, which I heard made releasing PS2 games on PS4 much harder than it needed to be, resulting in the paltry selection of titles available.

I played it to death when it first came out, but that was 7 years ago - it might feel a bit dated now. I loved it at that time, and there was no backwards compatibility so as one of the launch titles i spent a lot of hours roaming around ticking everything off.

I never owned the dlc, but that does look really good. Think I’m going to rebuy it and check it out. Sunset overdrive was top 5 of the generation for me, loved that game and can see the similarities. Still annoyingly expensive digitally, will have to order physical from somewhere.

Minus the whole "shoot your daughter up with heroin every six in-game hours to prevent her from becoming a zombie" gimmick mechanic, I thought Dead Rising 2 was a hell of a lot of fun when I played it at release on PC. Really excited for KOF. I've played a bit of KOF98 on fightcade. The really good thing about old multiplayer games going on gold is that it revives + boosts the playerbase massively. It's really easy to get a match in Tekken 6 and Tekken Tag 2 ever since they went on gold a year ago, xbox is probably the only platform where that's the case for those games.

Target puts their stock up at like 3:30am and you can reserve a console for pickup the next day. They've gotten better lately and stay up for maybe 5-10 minutes before selling out.

Also, you can set up Twitter to send you a notification every single time a specific account tweets, which would work for tracking Wario but would also mean that you'd get dozens of notifications about other random video game deals throughout the day.
