In fairness the rules are massively unclear a lot of the time and appear to contradict each other in places, particularly as "bubble" can mean one of several things with wildly different rules.

If I were a cynic I'd say this was by design.

I'm not going over to my parents this Christmas, we're both in Tier 4 areas and my mum was more OK with it than I thought she would be.

She's going over to my uncle's tomorrow to bring him a Christmas lunch and tidy his place up; she basically is looking after him as he doesn't do it himself. I don't think it's a great idea but can't really do anything about it.

She wants to then come to mine and drop me a lunch as well and do an exchange of presents. This will be distanced, i.e. I'll put my stuff on the doorstep and she'll pick it up and leave hers and then we can have a chat from across the front garden. This is probably pretty low-risk, right?

no don't do it!! lock yourself in your fridge!!! see no-one!!!!

the "one person meeting one other person outside at a distance" thing is like the least risky thing you can do, and the social/mental health benefits will probably outweigh the minimal risk there.

the uncle thing sounds a bit dicier, but, like, if the dude's not doing well and the alternative is posting some ham through the letterbox and leaving him to squalor, you do have to weigh that up.

If your uncle is otherwise socially isolated I would say the only risk is your mum & if she's isolating I can't see a high risk.

Obviously take this with the caveat that I'm only some twat on the internet.

Her specific bugbear with nestlé was the baby formula thing where they recommended to mothers in parts of the developing world to stop breastfeeding and use their formula instead which resulted in loads of infant deaths because the local water sources were all tainted so they were making up formula with contaminated water

its so much worse than that

essentially they got midwives to get new mothers to feed their babies formula as early as possible, even giving it away free up to a certain age, knowing that if the mothers stopped breastfeeding they would stop producing milk and therefore be reliant on the formula

nestlé are a powerfully evil corporation

Is there a way to ensure actual ethical purchases of coffee, chocolate etc or is it a lost cause

Natalie Fartman posted:

My own (limited) understanding is that it's pretty much a lost cause. Once you get big enough to start appearing in supermarkets you hit the limits of scalability where you can't adequately control what your suppliers in poorer countries are doing. What they are sometimes doing is making a ton of money through borderline slave labour by subcontracting orders and then turning a blind eye to any breaking of 'agreements' such as pesticide use, labour laws etc. etc. Purchasers from supermarkets then turn a blind eye to the disturbingly large amount of material they can source from the smallish well paid/organic/ethical farmers. Buying 'ethically sourced' products generally guarantees a higher percentage of ethically sourced material, but it's definitely also a scam on many levels.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainforest_Alliance#Criticism_and_response

https://www.ft.com/content/d191adbc-3f4d-11db-a37c-0000779e2340

You can find a ton of articles on the various marks and certifications and how random audits are a lovely way to detect farmers or supplies gaming the system.

IMHO it's still worth looking for and purchasing, even if the impact might be fairly minimal.

E: ^^ that

Even if you search around I don't think you'll ever guarantee it. It's sometimes worthwhile for a cartel to insert themselves between a legitimately trying company and their carefully chosen supplier.

No you should research every single item and their supply chain and feel bad about how every single item you've ever purchased is unethical in some manner. Personally I'm not happy until I've found the company ultimately owning the brand I've just purchase have racked up several humans rights violations in the Congo (or an equivalent country), polluted at least four rivers in ecologically sensitive areas, and have major investments in countries with oppressive regimes (hint, this is pretty much anyone from nestle to duracell)

ultimately there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, so just go for the least bad option possible because if you boycott any company that does a bad thing, you would starve

co-op own brand is certainly more ethical than most brands for a variety of reasons, but just not buying nestle until they stop being shits is moving the needle in the right direction
