Zugzwang posted:Wifezwang and I once ate at a "Chinese Restaurant" in some tiny-rear end eastern Utah town that was staffed entirely by white folks and also served spaghetti, lasagna, hamburgers, and macaroni and cheese. I've seen a lot of this in the most remote/low population towns near the coasts, chinese restaurants with at least a breakfast diner menu. It makes sense to me, just Chinese probably wouldn't stay open as literally the only local restaurant. Related but not America, when I was looking up bad pizzas I was surprised to find out that in Russia almost every single pizza restaurant is also a sushi restaurant. It was harder to find a pizza place without a sushi menu.

It was harder to find a pizza place without a sushi menu. I worked in Siberia about twelve years ago and was surprised to find tons of pizza and/or sushi restaurants - even more surprised to find that the sushi was excellent. The pizza was pretty good, but some of the ingredient substitutions were bizarre. Like baloney instead of ham, salami instead of pepperoni, sliced-up hot dogs instead of sausage. Going back and looking at Google Maps today though shows all the combo restaurants I remember are now specializing. https://pizzamia.ru/ Depressingly, Tyumen now sports a loving Papa John's a block from the hotel I used to stay in. As a non-american who grew up eating all kinds of Asian foods, Americanized chinese food is weird af. I ate it when I was a kid of course, but now it feels like a relic of a different cultural era, a time when ethnic foods had to hide their ethnicity to appeal to whites.

If you want to know what it was like back then, just ask the dude over there, he was alive then. It's like having a storage shed you don't go into for a long time. Adding on to the inexplicable comic book character in small town USA. The town of Idaho Springs about 20 mins from where I grew up has a statue of forgotten 40's comic hero Steve Canyon for some odd reason.

TheAardvark posted:I did post I was interested in funny poo poo from other countries with a similar feel in that case oh man taiwan is absolutely full of weird "tourist attractions" that exist mainly as destinations for kindergarten field trips and stop-offs for group tour coaches. most of them were built during the 80s-90s boom years so havent had quite as long to decay as the small town america ones, but still i always see this crayon factory from the train line running down the east coast, you can take your kids here and make your own crayons usually they'll have a load of weird fibreglass statues outside which mainly exist just for people to take photos in front of. this one is from some kind of sausage factory, hence the pig. why the pig had to be a steampunk airplane pig is another question entirely. MEAT. inside usually theres just a lot of information panels going into far more detail than anyone wants to read about the sausage or crayon making process or whatever, but the main attraction is diorama things which are, again, just meant for you to pose in front of, as this old lady and fish are demonstrating. this pic is very typical 'taiwan tourist attraction' to me the shoe building is kinda famous, it is actually a church. i do not know why they decided the best place to worship jesus would be inside a single, giant stiletto. the fibreglass headphone sculpture is probably, like, a wedding photo location, in case your bride really loves shoes and you're an audiophile? or something? as in america, attractions related to whatever the local agricultural industry is are pretty common. this one is located in a big salt-producing area, so they just built a big hill out of salt and whacked a fibreglass sculpture of an owl (?) on top. there you go, instant tourist attraction
