I hope self-promotion here is okay. I released my album Encoded in Dead Air today and I think it fits somewhere in the umbrella of post-rock. It's mostly dense atmospheric soundscape kind of stuff with some sampled spoken word bits and lots of emphasis on dynamics. Loud distorted guitar builds, drone and noise sections, with the occasional bits of pretty harmony poking through.

Check it out here and grab a free download if you're digging it: https://deanhamilton.bandcamp.com/album/encoded-in-dead-air

Junius and Constants are two very cool bands. I guess they're kinda post-rock-y? Not sure what to call them, really. Post-shoegaze? Both have vocals. Junius turns the reverb up to absurd levels. I have an album from each in my library, they are both very good (Junius' Martyrdom and Constants' Foundation), and I would certainly buy more in the future.

Anyway, thanks for the link, good song.

You need to buy a ticket for an online stream of a video, but I've enjoyed any of these sort of shows I've bothered with so far this pandemic, and it's Mogwai, and I've enjoyed the couple singles they've put out so far, so I'll probably attend.

I will probably do this, even though I'm likely going to be slightly disappointed they will probably just play the new record and not drop in some bonus "Mogwai Fear Satan" or even a "Rats of the Capital" or "Batcat."

I enjoy Mogwai.

It's neat to see how they've progressed. Their first album, Aura, is guitar-heavy rock/metal-ish stuff, while their latest album, From Voodoo to Zen, uses quite a bit of electronic elements. Solid band overall.

Take from their FAQ

code:

WHAT IF I AM LATE? CAN I PAUSE OR REWIND THE STREAM?

If you are a little late joining the broadcast, don’t worry, you will be able to start it from the beginning after the performance starts, although this is subject to variation on the night, and you will be able to pause/rewind the show for up to 3 hours from the initial broadcast time.
Not as bad if you a bit late same night.

The reason he missed much of the Every Country's Sun tour was illness. Apparently he has a pacemaker and sometimes has health issues related to it. So I'm hopeful he's on the next tour too, but mostly because that'd imply he's enjoying better health.

Cat Myers did an excellent job filling in for him. If he's not able to play in future tours, hopefully they can book her again.

yeah, i'm aware of his health issues- they canceled/postponed an entire US tour at one point- and Cat did fine on the faster, noisier songs, but i felt they left a lot to be desired on the rest of the stuff. to be fair it was also the last date on their last US tour and you could tell they weren't up for it even before they had to stop for a while to get technical issues sorted out.

God is an Astronaut was a band that I had like 4 of their albums and understood why they always get tossed around in post rock discussions, but one day I was like “I literally cannot tell any of their songs, and by extension, their albums apart” and just stopped listening to them.

I don’t experience this issue with basically any other band in the genre. TWDY, EITS, 65daysofstatic, Caspian, Godspeed! You, I can get into the real nitty gritty of all these bands, and I to this day can’t name a GoaA song, lol.

Jehde

Yeah there's no way they couldn't end with something classic. I enjoyed the show, and the new album. It totally is fine, every track is solid, but there's nothing exciting. Kinda Mogwai filler, but that's not really a bad thing.

Also I'm half convinced GiaA isn't a real band of human beings, and is actually just some sort of AI that makes the most "ideal" post-rock music.

E: The other non-new-album track they played (betwixt) was How To Be A Werewolf

I think the tracks I enjoyed most were Drive The Nail, Ceiling Granny, and Pat Stains.

And I like GiaA but I can totally understand the complaint of not being able to tell any of their stuff apart lol. I mean, I can, but I can get why others wouldn't.

Some of my favorites of theirs (that I don't think sound the same):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-N9kOMyod4

Their first few records are really great IMO. I'd even go so far as to call them essential post-rock listening. It's a shame I fell off of them for a while after that, but the new one is good!

They closed ticket sales at least 7 hours before the Mogwai show yesterday... so I wasn't able to buy a ticket. I know I should've bought one earlier, but for a prerecorded show why the gently caress would you do that? I'm honestly pretty salty about it, but the new album comes out in a week so whatever, I guess.

LMAO glad it wasn’t just me. I was jumping all over trying to find a ticket link until I checked their Twitter and saw literally dozens of people like “hey can I get a link to your show tonight?” and them going “hey sorry ticket sales are closed” when they weren’t scheduled to start for another 8 hours. Not really sure what the point of capping digital ticket sales is for a stream, haven’t seen anyone else do it this way before, every livestream concert I’ve been to has just had tix going until “doors” basically.

A weird decision by a good band.

Edit: I found this and just watched it instead ha ha

I absolutely assumed, cause someone posted earlier that they give you a little wiggle room for start time, that they'd be selling tickets literally throughout the show. Wonder how many ticket sales they lost because of that stupid decision.

I'm salty cause it was supposed to be a date night kinda thing. But instead of the performance we bought a video tour by the Boston MFA about Basquiat and his influence on art/hip-hop, so we still had a good night :toot:
