100% agree. A lot of people are taking him out of context like he thinks the Slackers are bad, even though he praises them earlier. But if you want a DIY scene to continue, you need younger bands for the kids to get rowdy with in the basement of an american legion.

Yeah, he's right, and I don't understand what's so bad about saying essentially "younger kids are more likely to latch onto a newer, younger ska band as a gateway into ska". Anecdotally, I saw The English Beat when I was somewhere around 19. At that time, Dave Wakeling was about as old as the guys in the Slackers are now. And like Mike said, they were great, and I had a good time, but I was never going to latch onto them the way I did with Less Than Jake or Reel Big Fish who were maybe 8-10 years older than me. Which, speaking of Mike Park, I'm sure most of you have seen that he teamed up with Mike from Kill Lincoln to put out a new Ska Against Racism comp: https://badtimerecords.bandcamp.com/album/ska-against-racism. It's great, I've been listening to it almost non-stop since it came out. The other thing that's looping with that comp is the new Devon Kay and the Solutions album: https://devonkayandthesolutions.bandcamp.com/album/limited-joy. It's not exactly ska, but it's got some really strong Hippos vibes, especially the sound of the keyboard and horns. It's like Heads Are Gonna Roll crossed with Defiance Ohio's Midwestern Minutes. It's kind of in line with that Brooklyn Vegan article, but I really think this has been an amazing year for music so far, somehow in spite of everything else being a disaster. I've used Bandcamp for a couple of years, but the Bandcamp Friday's have really pushed me to use it even more. If anyone else uses it, I'd love to see your profiles to search for more new poo poo. That Brooklyn Vegan article is great, so much music I didn't even realize was being made. It's a bit of a firehose, though, even with their playlist that highlights their top picks. Any real standouts that I should check out? I didn't discover Kill Lincoln from that article -- that was probably this thread -- but I really like them. I don't only listen to ska-punk, although I think that makes up a lot of the current renaissance of the genre.

But here are a couple of the standouts in my personal opinion, with the caveat that I'm assuming in addition to Kill Lincoln, you know We Are the Union since they've been around a while in relation to most of the bands in the article and that you'e heard the newer Bruce Lee Band stuff because both Jeff Rosenstock and Mike Park are the best. Sorry Sweetheart - Not in the article, but in their Spotify playlist. But I'll start with them because I really like these guys - imagine Kill Lincoln, but a little bit more metal screaming. I don't even like metal, but it works. They've only got 2 EPs, but they're both great. My favorite song is probably the first track off this one: https://sorrysweetheart.bandcamp.com/album/86d-from-everything Call Me Malcolm - I need to check out most of the UK bands they listed, but these guys are really good. The album they just put out this year is good, but the one they put out 2 years ago is great. Easily the best album closer I've heard in a while, with some truly epic "whoooa"s at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIGXf8-bArM Omnigone - The aforementioned new band from a couple of Link 80 guys with help from a lot of other great people. The album is all over the place stylistically, from ska-punk to more hardcore, but it's all really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiFI4InRTYQ No Such Noise - They only got a name check in the article, but they're local to me, and I like 'em. They were kind of inactive for a while, before contributing a song to The Shape of Ska Punk to Come, and it seemed like they were gearing up to do more, but pandemic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gec6cZbRYEU Half Past Two - They're from Orange County, and I'm not trying to be snarky here because I mean this in the best way, but their sound fits right in with what that would lead you to expect. A lot of positive factors for me: female led, keyboard, great covers, and my three year old loves both of these so I have an excuse to listen to them regularly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuyIQc-Oarg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wHTXWuqnp8 Hey Smith - From Japan, and the article nails that they do that thing that I seem to hear in a lot of Japanese bands where songs just completely change their sounds in a beat. Just listen to this first track and get psyched: https://asianmanrecords.bandcamp.com/album/life-in-the-sun Catbite - If you haven't heard them yet, I don't really know how to easily describe them, other than "they're in a similar vein to the Pomps" (side recommendation, check out the Pomps https://thepomps.bandcamp.com/album/top-of-the-pomps). Which might not help, but they go with "power-pop ska", I think. They're a four piece - guitar, bass, keyboards, drums. The guitar player is from the Snails and the drummer is from Last Martyrs of a Lost Cause (look, I live near Philly so this is relevant information to me, at least). Thanks for this. Yes, I know Bruce Lee Band and We Are The Union already. It's probably because I grew up on 90s ska, but Half Past Two does scratch the itch even if it's very much like the stuff I already know. Hey Smith was cool too. I don't know what it is about Catbite but I just cannot get into them. Vocal style maybe. EDIT: I finally watched that Jeff clip from Seth Meyers. I am not into everything he does but gently caress if that didn't hit me just right and show me why everyone loves Jeff. Buying the album now. Edit again: I thought I wanted a more polished sound like Half Past Two but now i want more angry yelling. I haven't been "into" ska in almost 20 years, but I played in a ska-punk band in Gainesville FL back in the late '90s, during the height of the third wave, saw almost all the third wave bands, and have nothing but nostalgia and love for the sound and the scene. Ska might be "uncool," but I never felt cooler than when I was away from home for the first time in college and playing fun music with my new friends. I didn't even realize a fourth wave was happening, so this warmed my heart and introduced me to some cool new groups. I've always been a sucker for female-fronted bands, so I already dig the Interrupters and Bite Me Bambi.

I saw them on their last tour, with the new singer, and my friend kept begging them to play Erin's Runaway Imagination and finally the new guy was like "look I dont know it." My friend goes, "thats fine, we do" and D-Ray's like gently caress it throw the mic to them i guess. So they did, and it was awesome. One of my favorite ska show memories.

I dunno if EatinCake is around here anymore, but I'm on a road trip and Gallant Ghosts came up for the first time in a while. Their first album dropped when I was moving for the first time, so it reminds me of the old times. I don't really have a point, but I'm glad goons make good music even if it was a half decade ago

FIF is always hit or miss for me and this is no exception. Some of it I like a lot, some of it I can't see listening to on purpose. Performance and production are good, it sounds tight. Lyrically I think it's no great shakes on a first pass.
