The game seems profoundly boring, but I do enjoy the highlight reel articles that come out every now and then. But my one question is how, even for people who enjoy a spreadsheet simulator, it can be at all fun to play if goonswarm is so dominant? Doesn't that just mean you have the choice of either being wrecked by them or joining with them–which as far as I can tell means you are exploited by some sort of multilayered bureaucracy of more powerful players? From an outsider's perspective it also sounds like those more powerful players have developed a kind of lowtaxian style of administration.

goonswarm has not been at the top all the time, we got our asses kicked in 2016 in a similar war of annihilation called the "casino war" or the first "World War Bee". in 2016 goonswarm was nearly destroyed, an alliance of every player in EVE attacked us and conquered all of our space. we have been preparing over the last 3 years, mining building up a Super Capital fleet to make sure that never happens again.

https://www.polygon.com/2016/6/8/11875960/world-war-bee-over-the-imperium-the-mittani-casino

quote:

The community in Eve Online has been at war for months now. World War Bee, as players refer to it, has seen a mercenary-led faction called the Moneybadger Coalition move against one of the game's largest player-led organizations, called The Imperium, in a bid to drive them from the Northern part of the map. After weeks of bloody battles, including the most deadly engagement in the game's 13-year history, World War Bee appears to be over.

But while the Moneybadger Coalition (MBC) is claiming victory and beginning to decamp, The Imperium's fleets remain largely intact. Polygon reached out to some key figures in Eve, including a player known as "The Mittani" — the leader of The Imperium — to learn more.

"The Imperium is dead," Mark "Seleene" Heard told Polygon on Skype late last week. "The bad guys are gone."

Heard, a long-time Eve player and formerly an employee of developer CCP, started out jovial, then quickly became serious. "Well, not necessarily gone. The very short version is that all of The Imperium’s former territory is gone. It’s been taken by all the various entities of the MBC."

A quick look at the community-run Eve sovereignty map confirms that, indeed, all of the pale blue sectors in the Northwest have vanished and been replaced by a rainbow of colors representing some of the key members of the MBC.

But Heard warns that the history of Eve Online is littered with false victories, and what is needed now are other players to occupy and defend this hard-won territory in the North. Many of the people Polygon interviewed said it's a great time for new players to enter the game, as sought-after "nullsec" territory at the edge of the map is up for grabs for the first time in years.

what is happening now is World War Bee part 2 :getin:

Hah, I ended up in A BOB affilaited industrial alliance because I played eve before I was a good and hence my account wasn’t old enough to join, however during the goon invasion of delve I liked to think I did my part by defueling a bunch of stations that were on BOBs jump network, before finally leaving eve about a month after. Last time I logged in like 3 months ago I got told by the game my production order of 25k hornet 1 drones was done.

goons lost 124 titans in the last battle, slightly more than our opponents. most people get a titan by mining minerals for many many months and years, you only pay $1300 if you want to skip the poop-socking

POS are still in the game because CCP dont know how the code works and if they remove it the entire game will implode

or scam someone into giving you their life savings by promising them that you're just processing their application to goonswarm and yell "toodeloo motherfucker" as you take their money and vanish

or be smart enough at market economics that you can invest your way to riches while the peons do the work for you

or know more about the game than the devs who make it (note: this is not difficult) so you can monopolize a resource ahead of some change that will increase its value by 100x, or exploit a poorly-designed feature to make more of a money sub-type than literally everyone else in the game had made, for the whole history of the game, all put together (5 goons actually did this, they had to freeze and revert their accounts to prevent it from wrecking the game forever)

They ruled that it was an illegal bannable exploit rather than legit gameplay. Which was kinda a stretch, but seeing as the faction 5 had made enough money to ruin one part of the game for large numbers of other players, I can see why they kinda had to.

But as the faction 5 had already used the bug & exploit report tool to tell the devs about the flaw, and gotten zero response, they instead were rewarded with the token gift that you get for reporting exploits. IIRC a couple months subscription time. Far less than the infinity billion dollars they made, but at least they weren't banned.

(Actually it's even better: one of the guys had told the developer making the feature that these bad things were possible, while it was was still in development, straight to his face on CCP's own forum thread talking about the upcoming feature. I think the response was something like "that's not possible, it doesn't work that way". So basically the devs gave themselves an atomic wedgie and then blamed the goons for saying they shouldn't do that, it's gonna hurt.)

It's weird to think that the whole saga of Star Citizen exists mostly because frustrated EVE players who were repeatedly ganked/scammed by Goons needed some kind of rapture game they could finally be successful in.

Nah, goons weren't destroyed in 2016, just evicted. Worse thing it can happen now is they get evicted again to somewhere else. With keepstars and lowsec asset safety this isn't hard.

the thing they are attacking is a "keepstar" which is the biggest space castle in the game. normal alliances can afford maybe one or two for their capital system. goonswarm has over 60 keepstars. the one they are attacking right now is in a backwater nothing system. our capital system 1DQ has what is called the "Dyson Sphere" protecting the most important Keepstar (the one where the goonswarm market lives). this is a shell of 50+ faction space castles surrounding the capital keepstar. if they attacked our HQ they would not trade titans with us 50/50, it would be an utter slaughter.

but the 1DQ keepstar is not our final defense. if they manage to attack 1DQ we have a super dooper fortified system set up in Y-OMTZ called "helms deep". as you can see from this map, OMTZ is in the exact corner of the galaxy, they would have to fight through two fortified systems to reach our final fortification. this is assuming they already defeated the 60+ keepstars deployed throughout our space :v:

are there any screenshots of the Dyson swarm? Because that sounds kinda cool.
