Studios should really just outsource their deepfakes to the people who do those free GitHub download ones, the people doing this poo poo in their free time are guaranteed to be like 10x better than whatever that crap Lucasarts tried to pawn off at the end of season 2

It's because deepfakes are a rights nightmare. At the very least, the adversarial models used to create deepfakes are built on a shitload of images that were pulled from the internet with zero concern about rights or ownership or privacy, for massive companies worried about liability it's a legal nightmare. Also since they're a very new technology they're not listed as something that would be excluded from copyright or fair use issues, and there's the additional problems of ongoing legislation about deepfakes out of privacy or safety concerns or the questions of how ownership works when an AI is involved.

Of course it's also because people in the effects industry aren't in any rush to have their job replaced by an algorithm.

Third ep in Cobra Kai. Not bad. They mentioned bringing in Johnny's stepdad for a roof repair. Is he known in the movies?

edit:

It was very telling that in the Corridor Crew video about how they did a deepfake of Tupac for a Snoop music video, they go out of their way to mention only using certain interview footage (instead of any of the multiple movies and music videos in which he appeared). They probably did use that other footage, but they couldn’t admit to it for legal reasons.

Or just don't have Luke.

Like it's a fictional story. If something is dumb and bad you can rewrite it until it's not, or give up entirely.

There’s more footage of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker than any other role he ever played by far and they own that footage, I don’t see a rights problem there.

It’s not like they’re putting him in POV porn or something lol

The more I read interviews with Favreau and Hamill, the more it seems like the original intention was to just recast Luke with a new actor. But the higher ups at Disney belatedly realized that maybe they shouldn’t have devalued their brand’s most popular character by turning him into some pathetic washed-up old coward who tried to murder his teenage nephew. So, to try to undo some of this damage, they put in a CGI Hamil doing cool and good Luke stuff.

Using another actor just wouldn’t have had the same impact. It seems to have worked, because Star Wars fans have eaten this poo poo up and have been on a victory lap ever since the episode aired. I still think this is all leading eventually to them either retconning a lot of the ST or removing it from canon entirely.

It's a brisk 80 minutes and looks like it could be fun, plus Chloë Grace Moretz is usually good.

It is a Max Landis movie though... so... :filez:

It is pretty amazing episode for the gang’s introduction to Neil Breen, the first appearance of Culk, and Landis does have some interesting insights on the characters in The Proton Effect. It sucks that he turned out to be a predator.
