The Story of Light trilogy of albums they released in 2018 was really good and it made me feel better in the aftermath of Jonghyun's passing. This was one of my favorite tracks:

I didn't look too deep into it, but it seems most of them have new agencies lined up or are going back to their home countries. I think one or two wanted to stay at JYPE but also did not renew their contracts when it was clear the other members were planning to leave?

Could just be they all want to pursue solo careers for a while idk

I'm sure there's a Soompi article by now or will be soon

There's this Soompi article but what you said is basically the gist of it - https://www.soompi.com/article/1447922wpp/dispatch-reports-all-got7-members-will-part-ways-with-jyp-entertainment-agency-responds

The 7 year curse always needs to be fulfilled. Twice reach 7 years next year right? I wonder if they'll stay or go, kind of difficult to make a guess considering they don't do any of the side project stuff most idols do.

JYPE seems to have been trying their best to avoid another Suzy situation when it comes to Twice and only ever pushes them as a group, though this late in their career I would like to see the girls start doing their own things as well. You may count it as a RIP (which if it were a RIP, SNSD would have stopped promoting as a group years before they actually did decide to take a break-- most of them had busy as gently caress solo work even during the group's heyday), but the fact that all nine members of SNSD are still very relevant and happily doing what they want into their thirties is a fate not many idols get, especially female ones. It would be nice to see Twice start establishing careers outside the group so they can be as lucky.

Besides, they're still a group despite only 5 of them remaining at SM, and will almost definitely have an OT8 comeback for their 15th at the latest. It's not like they parted on bad terms.

Yeah I think JYP will be forced to give Twice anything they demand in a contract extension because they’re still the highest selling girl group of all time (and the only other girl group signed to a major US label along with Blackpink). If any of them want to retire or move on I think they all stop though, I think they only stay if they are still together as 9. We’ll see how this year goes because they’re definitely entering a new phase of their career professionally and artistically. I think they’ll continue to grow internationally but have peaked in Korea, which probably has something to do with their evolution as well.

Yeah I should revise what I mean as a RIP. I guess musically. Out of all the SNSD members, the ones who have put out stuff that was good are just Taeyeon and Hyoyeon. I was into the first solo efforts from Tiffany and Seoulhyun, but post SM I think Tiffany just released very subpar-mid material. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Agreed about Tiffany tho.

e: I also really enjoy Jessica's solo work, but she doesn't really count toward a potential SNSD comeback and hasn't released anything in years now

man i hope she does more at some point tho. only or two of her title tracks were really good, but she has some a+ b-sides

Yuri was supposed to have a comeback late last year (potentially involving another member! not sure if it was a collab or new sub unit) but it was pushed back and she's currently p busy with acting now

The whole EP absolutely rips. Where Is Love is much more of an upbeat bop than I was expecting, with like, just a tinge of retro sensibility. I'm having a hard time identifying anything like a clear standout, so it's a really consistent level of quality from end to end.

Yeah I love this EP. Hwaa is such a great single and I love they went with that because it’s so different than what any other groups are doing. A much more traditional sound (aside from the clave beat) and no English. I love the melodic callbacks to Hann in this and Hann(Alone). Soyeon’s opening vocals are her strongest yet and her flow at the end of her rap verse is just so intricate and different rhythmically. Soojin also went hard with her vocals where she usually stays reserved and I loved hearing Miyeon on a quieter part instead of just chorus lines. Yuqi and Minnie killed as always too. The chorus is so simple but effective because it’s sophisticated harmonically with the melody and chords. Soyeon is a really smart composer.

The video is insane too, such nice visuals and the winter to a cleansing spring fire motif is done so well. The lighting is especially nice throughout and really gets that bright winter sun vibe without being harsh on the girls skin. Really impressive. I love the choreo too, very fitting to the song and again unique from other groups.

Where is Love and Dahlia are also standouts to me, either of those could have been a single. Soyeon’s rap on Lost is also killer.

And about Shuhua, from what they’ve said Soyeon works with the group to write and distribute lines and Shuhua isn’t as comfortable for a variety of reasons and prefers having less lines. It’s not a situation where she’s just forced to stay in the back or given lines she’s not comfortable with like Momo being forced to sing in that nasally head voice instead of her comfortable register where she’s much more confident. I do wish Shu sang more because she has a nice neutral voice to contrast all the unique voices in the group but if she’s comfortable in her role then that’s for the best.

First time a 4th gen group has debuted at #1 on Melon too drat!

Oh and Dreamcatcher confirmed the release of their 6th mini on the 26th :woop: my favorite two groups giving new stuff two weeks apart is a great start to the year.

Happy for G-Idle! They deserve all the recognition/success :allears:

I finally had some time to sit down and give I Burn a listen through just now—every track slaps and I love them all, though there's something about Dhalia that just hits real good. This EP is fairly unique compared to most pop-genre stuff I've ever listened to tbh. Easily my favorite stuff from them so far.

While Shuhua might not have any full lines in the single, she spends the entire MV serving up the best looks lmao. She gets to end the MV with the coolest visual too, imo :haw:

Also just want to shout out the choreography for Hwaa. There's a bit during the chorus that looks inspired by the "wavy hand" move from the chorus of 'More' by K/DA :3:

All the chart stuff just seems like the benefit of releasing early in the year before other big groups are releasing, perfect time for a group that's getting more popular and people wanting new stuff to listen to. It's a much better time to release music than for eg: Loona releasing during Blackpink promotions last year and then crossing over into the Twice comeback

If they don't have swords on every stage I won't care about them. If they do though...

Speaking of gimmicks, I'm curious what SM does with Aespa going forward because they've become popular enough already without the avatar thing really being a factor and I wonder if they abandon it other than as a visual gimmick in socials and videos. I think they were overly ambitious in the way they described them all along but the incorporation so far has been just enough to do some world building for their concept without feeling like it was being forced.

I don't follow them but they did an EP with one sub unit that I listen to a lot. It's hazy and dreamy pop but with this weird experimental twist to it at times. It's just 15 minutes so it's worth a listen!

I love the theatrics, lmao. I think that aspect of k-pop is part of what drew me back to the genre after becoming bored with everything I've listened to over the years. I spent a weekend last month just watching all the live performances from Queendom and Road to Kingdom—almost every performance from those shows was more like a theater/musical production than a concert and I loved every one of them lol. I'm absolutely biased, but my favorites were G-Idle's Queendom performances of Lion and Put It Straight. Their cover of Fire was great too :kimchi:
