Shame about Fury Road, it's one of the few UHDs where I actually do prefer the regular blu ray. The UHD is good for the most part but for such an immersive film it's unfortunate that the CG flames are so distracting. All of the fire and explosions in the movie are more convincing on the regular blu ray.

But it was Fury Road so like you I had to get that UHD and see it for myself.

Is something different about the transfer, or is it just the higher resolution bringing out the flaws?

I don't know the technical details but it's something I've seen in other UHDs. For instance, Skyfall, when the bomb goes off at MI6. On the blu ray it looks fairly convincing(although still not great), but on the UHD it's pretty lovely looking.

Unfortunately Fury Road is a movie where poo poo is constantly exploding and so there are a whole bunch of places where the CG stuff takes me out of the movie in a way that didn't happen with the blu ray. It's one reason why I consider Backdraft to be an essential UHD, anything with that many old-school practical flames and explosions will look great on the format.

At some point the business became completely focused on new releases, and almost every new release started to get the Titanic treatment. Entire walls of Steven Seagal movies as far as the eye can see. For most of the time I actually worked at Blockbuster you couldn't really depend on it anymore for older stuff, because the policy was basically that nothing ever got replaced. So if someone rented out the one copy of The Mangler or whatever, and scratched it, well that's it for being able to ever rent The Mangler again. Over time the non-new release sections became almost empty just from attrition and never replacing anything.

This is exactly why I stopped going to Blockbuster. One day I wanted to rent Assault on Precinct 13 and they told me they didn't have it anymore because not enough people rented it.

Yep, VHS was originally marketed/embraced as a way to record TV, not to purchase pre-recorded content. That came later. VHS won the format war simply because everyone already owned a VCR.

It should also be noted that the thing about how Betamax lost that fight was because the format didn't have porn is a complete myth. They totally did. And lots of it.

The whole thing came down to record time. Matsushita was willing to let RCA do a slower tape speed for 4 hour recording time, and that made the deal. Sony wasn't willing to sacrifice on quality, but never underestimate the power of good enough.

Never underestimate putting a format in a games console

Like, given the fact that standalone players for both HD-DVD ($499 and... $799?!) and Blu-ray players ($1000!!) were around or more than the same price as either model of PS3 and hadn’t really dropped too much when it arrived at the far end of the year both formats launched in, them selling like 670,000 of them in two months in the US and another 600,000 in Europe pretty much started the beginning of the end for HD-DVD.

The higher resolution makes no difference on Fury Road as it's just an upscale. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=11906&d2=9540&s1=117395&s2=92435&i=2&l=0

Yeah, that and exclusives. Blu-ray had Fox, Disney, and Sony. HD-DVD had Universal and Paramount. When Warner went Blu only, that was it. I think Warner was actually thinking about going HD-DVD only, but I might be mixing up my history.

Without the PS3, who knows how HD-DVD would have faired.

Also, comparedb to HD-DVD, Blu-ray was actually good enough. The spec wasn't complete before launch, so first generation Blu-ray players couldn't do fancy things like picture in picture and other stuff. HD-DVD could.

Funny how I don't think that's been in a release in 10 years that took advantage of that.

It's not as cut and dry as just saying that all upscales make no difference. They aren't all created equal.

That said, yea Fury Road's upscale doesn't do a whole lot in terms of extra detail. The HDR is really where you'd hope for a boost but like I said before the negatives outweigh the positives for me in this case.

It's funny how UHD discs kind of nail it. Most have some kind of resume function. They're not full of dumb crap. Just the movie, maybe a few features, and that's it. However, they also have some GODAWFUL menus. The 2001 UHD comes to mind. Also I think the Ghostbusters I+II discs have terrible menus as well.

It's also funny that Sony didn't provide UHD functionality to the PS4 Pro. I think that could have given the format a big shot in the arm because at minimum, the equipment is there and people might be aware of it. It would also help if more of the prestige older titles would come out on UHD like a standalone Lawrence, or Godfather, or Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

It’s in my short list of demo discs just for the color. The Blu is beautiful as it is, but some of the diffused scenes look a little mushy since it’s a VC1 encode. The UHD even makes the dupey flashback scene look great when it had a thick look before. Also, the newer remix is excellent and doesn’t have the too-modern foley like the 1996 track. Original mono included as an option, of course.

Yea it's a tough call for me because I don't have a lot of interest in 4k Psycho or The Birds, and like you said the previous Vertigo blu ray was excellent in it's own right. My instinct is to wait for a sale when I get the set for like half the price.

I'll never understand why some reissues of older films have totally reworked foley, barring cases like the loss of the original tracks or something. People will buy the movie regardless, so it isn't like it's a big selling point, and it often sounds out of place to the point of being distracting. It happened with Black Christmas recently and it just sounded off.
