amigolupus posted:Mookie has a child's understanding of racism. Bad People can only be racists and they show it by using slurs and being mean to orcs. Good People like the Deegans can never be racist. Why, look at how the Deegans have an orc friend in Stonewater, or how Dominic mansplains orc culture to others and cooks orc cuisine without consulting his orc guests, or how Daddeegan got his tribal tattoo by brokering peace between those warring Is it ever explained how Daddeegan brokered peace or should I just assume he mesmerized the tribes with his electric guitar skills?

To clarify I didn't forget Dance Commander, I just forgot he's not the king. I suppose the clue is that would mean his son is Prince Siggy, not a knight.

Breetai posted:He likes to be surprised by where his own characters take him. Which is probably why this is such a train wreck, since Snout's sole character trait is to be curious...i.e. a generalized desire to learn more with no specific goal or direction. His sole traveling companion has no motivation because she's basically a child. So, his plot is being driven by the motivation of characters who basically have no motivation, taking place in a part of the world where literally nothing of interest is happening. So, there's no personalities to rub against one another to produce conflict or chemistry or humor. There's no external events for them to react to or become involved with. No wonder they just wander aimlessly from set piece to set piece.

Children have lots of motivations though. Curiosity especially. Kids are super curious and love to explore and learn things. Like honestly, if Snout had a literal child (that he didn't gently caress, thanks Mookie for being such that I need to clarify this) I think it could be pretty fun and endearing - you know, if Mookie could write. Corpsemomwife isn't child-like, she's furniture-like.

But the problem is that curiosity isn't a good motivation for this style of writing. The whole 'see where my characters take me' approach is valid for some styles/situations of writing, where you establish personalities and ask yourself what a person like this would do in this situation or around these other people. But curiosity is kind of a dead end if it's the sole character trait...because by definition the character's curiosity cannot tell you what it is they are exploring. It's your job to create a thing for them to find. It can work in a situation where curiosity could inherently lead to conflict/encounters (i.e. there's a mysterious house, what's in that house? There's a secret, heavily guarded facility. What are they doing there?) But in this case they're also just wandering through nothing but weird looking animals and wilderness. Basically, you can't write passively in this situation.

I read the implication being the place they were standing transformed into Sir Wormo, since the ridges are the same. This is possibly one of the most incomprehensible actions he's ever drawn, goodness.

I mean, either the place they were in transformed, or Mookie forgot that one page ago the circle of stones was on an entirely flat plane.
