We’re there allegations of HW trying to rape Dunst? I’d be slightly surprised as she is a-list and most of his victims weren’t - he needed that power differential to exploit.

There's reports that her agent warned her against being alone with him, but she hasn't said Weinstein had done anything to her. But he blacklisted Renee Russo and Ashley Judd for turning him down and this list of people who accused him of some sort of misconduct

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Weinstein_sexual_abuse_cases

also includes Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett so I don't think there was anyone who he would have considered too famous to assault.

Edit Jesus: Heather Graham, Salma Hayak, Helena Bonham Carter. Kirsten Dunst is just about the only actress not on there.

The sheer length of that list is sickening. It makes me wonder how many people are just out there walking around that would be just like this if they had the power and influence to get away with it.

One of the first things that happens when a police department finally starts working on their rape kit backlog is they discover they have at least one serial rapist.

The Ten doesn't hold up as well as I remembered. :( Some segments are still great, the whole movie is worth it just for the part that starts with the guy who sees his neighbor bought a CAT scan machine, so he decides he needs a CAT scan machine too. And Paul Rudd is good as always. But some of the other parts fall flat, and the prison rape bit makes the prison rape bit from My Cousin Vinny look positively restrained.

I'm glad that the whole "lol prison rape" thing is finally starting to die in pop culture. It's by no means perfect now, but it's a step in the right direction. I'm always disgusted when people cheer on prison rape as some kind of retribution. I've come across entirely too many people who love the idea.

I always found it kinda amusing that Let's Go to Prison is an endless barrage of prison rape jokes but at the end of it it turns out they really are gay, in love and start a prison wine company when they get out.

(it's a bad movie)

That was the first thing I thought of and I don't know how to feel about that. I can't really articulate my thoughts on it but I don't necessarily see that plot development as a positive depiction of gay romance.

It's a genuinely ballsy move when considering what kind of demographic that movie is for, but you can't put a three minute band-aid over 87 minutes of gay panic.

EDIT: HAHAHAHA, according to Wikipedia they had to replace a drums-only score recorded by Meg White for the film. I wanna see the Birdman cut of Let's Go to Prison.

I saw:
The Dry: quite a good murder-mystery, set in a small Australian town in the middle of a drought. Lots of cutting between the protagonist's green childhood and the desiccated present. Interesting dynamic where he believes his friend to be innocent of the new murders but probably guilty of this other, old murder. Loyalty mixed with guilt. Some really great performances also.

Children of Men: a rewatch, of course. Noticed a couple new things-- Theo claiming not to need the money, but stopping to pick the change Patric throws on the ground; several of the Fishes in the background during the early scenes of Theo's life, or while they're driving into Bexhill; the fact that Kee trusts Theo because Julian did. I've never really thought about how the government just stops being in the movie for like a 40 minute stretch in the middle, and that when it comes back, it first appears in the form of Syd, who comes across as a joke at first. Syd himself is a sort of fusion between the cops and the Fishes, especially when he returns the day after the birth in militia clothes and a headscarf. There's also this association between Theo and Luke which I need to sort out. Both have the exact same line-- "Get in the loving car"-- after a scene where Luke kills someone Theo cares about. Also a similarity between Theo and Marichka-- both just drop everything the minute they see the baby, and take Kee to stay with an old friend. That old Georgian couple are Marichka's version of Jasper and Janice, I guess.

Theo's whole arc in the first half of the movie reminds me of K's in Blade Runner 2049. He goes from not giving a poo poo and just going through the motions, to having a sort of selfish, individual hope, namely getting back with his ex-wife (or being the robot Messiah, for K). That hope gets crushed right before his eyes, and then replaced a few hours later with a more selfless, universal hope. Though the path to this is quite different: Theo briefly tries to go back to his old life before Kee goes and tells him about the pregnancy, while K decides of his own accord to help Deckard instead of safely killing him. And of course that moment is the emotional climax of BR2049, while CoM has like another 70 minutes of Theo and Kee losing all their friends and allies.

Also, it's funny, but Theo doesn't really do anything in the big ceasefire scene. He just holds Kee's hand while she walks out, basically.

I was meant to go see that this weekend gone but our city got put into a three day lockdown, so that got scuppered. Still keen to go see it though, good to hear some good rap for it - I've missed Bana on screen.

Another Australian movie, High Ground, gets a wide release on Jan 28th, and has also gotten really good reviews from the festival circuit. Can't wait.

The Dry sounds pretty good! I'll have to check it out.

That's also a cool observation with CoM and BR2049.

I haven't gotten to any movies this weekend. But during the week I watched the first round of movies for the horror bracketology thread, Hardcore (1979), and some William Grefe exploitation movies. Hardcore was by the far the best the lot, it's a neo noir by Paul Schrader about a conservative father tracking his runaway daughter down who has started making porn in California. Easily the best George C Scott role I've seen.
