Did I ever post the story about the Fifth Element premier party at Bruce Willis’ house, when Ian Holm walked up to what he thought was a beautiful koi pond in the backyard, and as he got closer realized it was just a pool and the koi were actually dozens of floating used condoms? That’s it, that’s the story.

Yeah, Carpenter is a very real dude. Like Sonic the Hedgehog was invented and he realized he just really liked playing Sonic games more than making movies so he just kinda stopped making movies because, like, why bother. Then his kid and his kid's friend started coming over to gently caress with his synths so he figured why not cut a couple albums with them?

I can't remember which one it is (maybe Prince of Darkness?) but the blu-ray for one of his movies has an interview where he talks about how surprised he is that people still his movies 30+ years later and he very nearly starts crying. Check out Amy Nicholson's podcast series (10 eps) about Halloween, "Halloween Unmasked". She interviewed Carpenter and she goes into detail about how his demeanor evolved from bitter and grumpy to a sweetheart being a little snarky for the fun of it. It's a nice counterpoint to his reputation, while acknowledging it. Plus, it's a really good podcast about Halloween. I learned a few things about Carpenter I'd never heard before. (Lots of good stuff about the unsung hero Debra Hill, too!)
