Bonus.
Did I ever post the story about the Fifth Element premier party at Bruce Willis’ house, when Ian Holm walked up to what he thought was a beautiful koi pond in the backyard, and as he got closer realized it was just a pool and the koi were actually dozens of floating used condoms? That’s it, that’s the story.

I hope that's because it was a wild party and not because they never cleaned the pool.

I rewatch Predator 2 just as often as Predator. It really is a great sequel. Looks great on UHD too.

Predators 1 and 2 got the formula right, take an existing movie genre and throw in a Predator. Once they decided to make the movies about the Predators they failed. This is also why AVPR is slightly better than AVP because it's a teen slasher movie.

This rules. I have a friend whose bedroom full of esoteric video tapes could fuel enough content for three more of these.

But also a huge amount of the stuff he has is unwatchable garbage he paid a fortune for because he's a crazy person.

Looking forward to this, but based on what Brendan Fraser has said about his mental health, I'm worried. Aronofsky is apparently Kubrick-level in terms of psychologically loving with his actors.

Now I am less excited. Brendan Fraser is a goddamn gem and I was so glad that he started to be in stuff again. Anyone that's mean to him should get kicked in the genitals.

Hey friendos, do you have any particularly inspirational/insightful quotes from directors you could share? I'm starting to figure out some classroom materials for my new job teaching film and need some film-related wall stuff to hang around, and want to break away from infographics and junk.
I've always liked Hayao Miyazaki's random thoughts.

Some helpful: “I believe that fantasy in the meaning of imagination is very important. We shouldn't stick too close to everyday reality but give room to the reality of the heart, of the mind, and of the imagination.”

And some less so: “Modern life is so thin and shallow and fake. I look forward to when developers go bankrupt, Japan gets poorer and wild grasses take over.”

John Carpenter is wonderful because I've seen some interviews with him when he was a young up and coming director and he was already like this back then so it's not just him being a crotchety old man.

Yeah, Carpenter is a very real dude. Like Sonic the Hedgehog was invented and he realized he just really liked playing Sonic games more than making movies so he just kinda stopped making movies because, like, why bother. Then his kid and his kid's friend started coming over to gently caress with his synths so he figured why not cut a couple albums with them?

I can't remember which one it is (maybe Prince of Darkness?) but the blu-ray for one of his movies has an interview where he talks about how surprised he is that people still his movies 30+ years later and he very nearly starts crying. I was shocked.

Check out Amy Nicholson's podcast series (10 eps) about Halloween, "Halloween Unmasked". She interviewed Carpenter and she goes into detail about how his demeanor evolved from bitter and grumpy to a sweetheart being a little snarky for the fun of it. It's a nice counterpoint to his reputation, while acknowledging it. Plus, it's a really good podcast about Halloween. I learned a few things about Carpenter I'd never heard before. (Lots of good stuff about the unsung hero Debra Hill, too!)
