SHINee's back

Everything Oh My Girl did on Queendom was just pure perfection. It was so nice seeing AOA do their thing and slay it, too-- especially now that it's the last thing we'll have seen of them, at this point. That fuckin' tango version of Miniskirt not having an official release like most of the Queendom tracks is a drat crime.

Waiting impatiently for Kingdom to happen so hopefully Queendom comes back around again, because I have next to no interest in watching Kingdom at all lol

(G)I-DLE's cover of Fire was one of the worst performances on the show though, for me-- which was disappointing considering how great their stages on the show were otherwise. But at least it wasn't as bad as Lovelyz's cover of Sixth Sense.

Yeah, after looking up the scores for the competition, I saw that G-Idle's cover of Fire ranked lowest during that round, lol RIP. It's deffo the weakest of their Queendom performances, but I enjoyed how energetic it felt—and the little hair flip Yuqi did :3:

It's just such a hard song to cover-- one of the most, if not still THE most, iconic debut tracks of all time. And to try and compete with the energy that even a brand new 2NE1 had at the time? Whew lad. I would have loved to see them take a stab at one of 2NE1's slower tracks instead, tbh.

It's kind of the exact same issue Lovelyz had: how do you cover Sixth Sense? I think the only group there who could have pulled it off vocally is MAMAMOO. And even then you're trying to capture the energy of BEG, which even the arrangement didn't have the bombast of the original song, let alone the performance from the girls. Some songs are just untouchable lol.

e: actually Oh My Girl probably could have maybe slayed Sixth Sense tbh. I forgot this exists lol

Yeah, my perspective of G-Idle covering Fire comes from someone who has zero nostalgia towards 2NE1, having never listened to any of their music (as my interest in the k-pop genre around the time was nonexistent), so I don't carry that baggage with me. But after informing myself with context, I also understand how the cover could never live up to the original. I do appreciate how ambitious G-Idle were to try it at least! Haha.

Queendom took me from just watching it because I love Idle to being a huge Mamamoo fan and being happy they won in the end. It also made Wheein probably my favorite performer in all of Kpop. Idle raised the bar from week one on everyone though and made all the other groups up their game, and Lion/Put it Straight are the most memorable stages looking back, but it was great to see Mamamoo get the much deserved respect from the win.

Idle kinda blew up from the start with Latata and Queendom definitely vaulted them up to a top group, making their next comeback sell like 3x more, but Mamamoo had been steady grinding for so long and are so crazy talented I'm glad they won in the end. I don't follow the shows or voting systems at all though, I'm just speaking purely from how I felt about the outcome.

MAMAMOO already had insane respect and huge GP appeal by the time Queendom came around. They could have gone up on stage and sneezed every week and still won, probably.

I would have liked to see Oh My Girl win, but MAMAMOO winning was well deserved and tbh the expected outcome from the day they were cast lol

Oh yeah it was not the most balanced in terms of the levels of popularity and success but I think it ended up being a tighter comp than expected. It also kinda hit at the perfect time for MMM after a few slow years while Twice and BP were taking over.

Man, I was already pretty excited for the new GG coming next month, TRI.BE, since they're under Shinsadong Tiger's new group and it seems like EXID LE will also be involved in music production. But it also turns out their leader is SNSD Yuri's cousin, and I live for nonsense like that so I'm even more hyped up than I was already!

So Dreamcatcher unveiled their new lightstaff and robe loving  they're great. Imagine a full concert hall looking like a drat cult ritual. Love this crazy group.

Also the girl group rock band Rolling Quartz finally released their debut single and I kinda love it for how raw and 90s Offspring it sounds. The girl on drums rips too

Yeah, minis have always been common but seem moreso these days. Depends on the company and group sometimes, too.

Since most groups are constantly putting out material every single year, it feels like a full album just isn't even in the cards or on a schedule. Big groups like Twice do get them but also, after a bunch of eps and minis

Bottom Liner

That's one of the things I expect western labels to adapt because it's a lot cheaper to produce a mini/ep and you can have new material to market every year (or even faster) instead of every few years. Just dumping all the full album cost into promo and a dope video for a big single and throwing in a few b sides seems like a smarter move given the way music is consumed these days.

The idea of an album as a whole is probably going to fade out because of streaming and the ease of access to production these days. Before you'd try to record as much as you could when you got into a studio to make the most of that investment, but now that's much more accessible to artists at every level so they can make music on a more open schedule. I have most of the exact software and samples these producers are using on my macbook, the only real difference in the studios they record and my office is the microphones and sound isolation, and I could get 95% of the way there with a small investment and transforming a closet.

Comebacks seem to happen far more often per year now than they used to, as well, which probably has a lot to do with there being so much more competition for groups than there was in the 2nd or even early 3rd gen. It used to be maybe 1-2 comebacks per year was the norm, but from what I can tell, these days you only really see comebacks being spaced out like that with more senior groups, or companies like YG who have always had relatively few releases per year compared to other companies.

Probably way easier to pump out a bunch of mini albums when you're doing a new comeback every few months, than maybe one mini and a studio album that may have more than one single on it.

e: i imagine having fans buy several mini albums in a year rather than one studio album is way more lucrative, too

Winner POTM July 2013
The thing is the Kpop industry is still tied to physical sales and the whole lootbox model they have going, whereas Western pop isn't any more. So while Western artists seem to drop non-album singles more often recently, for the most part Kpop artists will still scrape together some B-sides for a physical release.

The flip side of that is that Kpop "full albums" are usually just singles with more B-sides because they don't generally promote more than one single from an album

This live band rock version of Dumdi Dumdi (with Latata intro) slaps and they're really killing the live vocals lately. Soyeon wasn't kidding when she said all of their singing had improved a lot.

Another live performance of Hwaa too

These live shows are getting weirder with the cameras though, they obviously do two takes with a close up camera in their face that's really jarring when it immediately cuts to a wide angle and there's no camera on stage lol.
