At least in the first part/beginning of the War of the Underworld arc they were consistent with the rules. Yeah, despite all it's poo poo I really did enjoy SAO out of some bizarre mix of ironic enjoyment and genuine enjoyment but this whole half really did lose me when there stopped being any semblance of rules and we just started fighting like a lovely Gurren Lagann and/or Jojo.
