never
just get used to it.

in the past I've tried using wax or oil to help with the squeaking but from my experience a lot of squeaking comes from the plastic pivot cup where the top part of truck connects to the base plate and pivots, instead of the bushings. so you have to take a part the truck to get to it to stick a little oil or wax in there.
That's just my experience though.

Cool, thanks. As long as it doesn’t mean my trucks are too lose or something like that, it won’t bother me too much.

Also good to know. I read somewhere that if you just go ahead and learn on really loose trucks, you'll gain better balance in the long run.

How do I develop a good powerful kick when I'm pushing? Right now I get in at least 20-30 minutes a day and I'm working on keeping my front foot in a consistent spot, keeping my pushing foot close to the board, and trying to get a good swing in with every kick rather than just stabbing at the ground. Still, its hard to get it up in the air in front of me without starting to lose my balance. I have to get in a bunch of successive pushes to maintain speed on flat ground. Wheels are as loose as they can be without having side to side play, so I'm sure it's my novice technique. Do I just need to keep at it and let it come naturally?

When I'm really pumping for speed, my plant foot isn't even doing much but making the board stay straight. Like I kinda hop in the air while i get my kick foot going and then push down with both feet at the same time.

its a bit like those guys that do competitive rowing. minimum effort for maximum output.

you'll get a feel for when you're at your desired speed and from there its just maintaining it. kick coming out of turns. kick a bunch approaching an upslope.

oftentimes pushing can stabilise u and others its a doomed move and it should feel natural after a while which is which

the flipside of this sounds basic but look into the ways to quickly lose speed safely before u start going fast as u can. knowing how to stop safely fast is arguably the most important trick there is!

Haven't skateboarded since I was like, 11 years old, and my fiancee just texted that the board and parts I ordered this weekend arrived. Haven't felt this giddy in ages! Also I didn't tell the fiancee what I ordered so now she's mad, but I have a skateboard so whatever.

Pics to come. Ollie attempts to follow. X-rays of ~whatever I end up breaking~ eventually.

Doublepost for content. I really really was not digging most of what was on offer looking at decks, then this one jumped off the page at me. Extremely pleased with how the trucks compliment it. I'm not sure how much of a poo poo your average skater gives about accessorizing their trucks to the deck, but it brings me joy damnit.

The griptape adds something nice to the motif imho. A new pair of kicks as well, as I didn't have any existing footwear that I was willing to sacrifice to the ollie gods, and well, accessorizing god damnnit!

Kids at the local skatepark will either dig it or think I'm the biggest dork on the planet, but I'm going to be a 30-year-old struggling to push with coordination, and flailing awfully while trying to ollie, so I've already accepted the latter to an extent.

It's 8:00 and raining like a motherfucker here right now. I'm crushed.

Okay, I guess I should temper my emotions a bit here. It's California, a few days of rain and 40 degree temps are a big deal for our spoiled asses.

Let's talk progression in the meantime- I think I'll get my legs under me pretty quick, and should be able to get to where I was with the basics quick enough. Pushing, tic-tacs, riding fakie, shouldn't be too big of a barrier. My progression as a kid was actually a bit weird, and I know I can drop in no problem on a minipipe, that should come back quick too. I think I might be able to roll into a pipe, although maybe that's just phantom empathetic memory from watching my friend do it... Can't remember what the gently caress I DID once I was in the a pipe or bowl though. Rock to fakie doesn't feel familiar, and I definitely never figured out an axel stall. Was I just cruising around the pipes and the bowls as a kid? Can't remember anything more involved than that. Pumping through the bowls then launching myself out of the bigass bowl at the end and just going flying (board be hosed) is my most vivid memory. Aah, to be 11 and give 0 fucks again. Honestly the local skatepark had a really nice layout for just pumping around and carving it up. Here's the best photo I could find.

Flatland tricks are completely alien though, I never even figured out the ollie. If you asked 11 year old me I'd tell you I totally had it, but I'm pretty sure I was just popping my nose up and grinding the tail into the asphalt. Might have gotten the back wheels to clear an inch or two every now and then through dumb luck and a poor application of physics. That's my biggest initial goal, and I really want to work it hard and dial it in before I try progressing onto anything technical. Ultimately I'm a 30-year-old chasing a career, so I'm not looking to get featured in any skate films, but the idea of carving up the streets and making the neighborhood a fun playground is what captured my attention the other week. If in a year or two I can pop up and off curbs, maybe throw in a kickflip, and do a simple 50-50 grind on an easy feature I'll be a happy camper. Is working on a slappy grind a good goal to chase while I'm also progressing the ollie? Same Q for manuals, seems like that's a good skill to build for board control and balance. Are there any other early steps in progression I should be chasing?

Hmm, maybe I should start by studying the ways of the Na-Kel.

Experience report: Just because you're excited to ride for the first time in 19 years and the skies finally cleared doesn't justify trying to take an inaugural ride on roads covered in branches and storm junk at night. It actually went okay except when I hit a gnarly crack and fell onto my elbow, which is fine, but I burst a blood vessel or some poo poo right on the point and it is HILARIOUSLY swollen in one really specific and small spot. 1/10 pain and full range of motion, but funny to look at and likely to be a gnarly level of black and blue by the weekend.

I'M BACK BABY!

(also holy poo poo 11 year old me made that look easy, I'm gassed after 3 miles.)

welcome to swell bow town
they are funny in a body horror way the first time you end up with one.

quote:

SWELLBOW
What it is: The classic swellbow, otherwise known as Olecranon Bursitis. A swellbow is caused by hitting the tip of your elbow bone, which causes inflammation and liquid (aka bursa) to fill up under the skin, making it look like a nut sack hanging from your arm.

Severity Factor: 1/10 to 7/10. A swellbow can either go away by itself, or it can easily get infected. If the liquid isn’t going away, surgery is going to be needed.

How to deal with it: If it’s not broken or infected, doctor’s recommend just not touching it or wearing an elbow pad (LOL). It’s possible the doctor may want to drain your elbow, but other than that, just relax.

What to avoid: Slamming on it again, trust.

Rehab: Relaxation and an ibuprofen. You should be good in a few days…unless it’s broken then it’s surgery time.

http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2017/...get%20infected.
